EVENTS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS ISSUE.

March 23, Augusta General Store, Augusta By Reda Leasor

Beautiful spring weather greeted the 20 club members touring to Augusta, Ky. Starting out with 40 degrees to a balmy 57, there was no rain all day! We saw acres of flat farmland bordered by streams and creeks. Huge slabs of limestone lay in the streams, which were close to the roads because of recent heavy rains. The Licking River made an appearance several times. One of the farms supported a large grassy pasture with herds of sheep. The black barns were beautiful. Next we were on a mountain with a drop of 100 to 300 feet straight down. Below was another field, flat as a pancake, ready for plowing.

Thanks to the organizers of a great tour to Augusta – (l-r) Brad and Reda

We were entertained by the varied terrain. The view was unobstructed since the trees were without leaves. I noticed several old cemeteries had been preserved in rural Falmouth. One was easily as large as any in Lexington. Large, historic gravestones were seen in The Old Pioneer Cemetery. I love seeing these as so much history can be learned from them, and they are important for those tracing family roots.

Having lunch at the Augusta General Store (l-r) Charlie and Carolyn

Simpson, Janet Hoover and Jack Garabedian.

Parking was reserved for us at the Augusta General Store and soon we were inside ordering our lunches. The food there was delicious, and many ordered desserts to go. A few of us enjoyed a guided tour of the Baker Bird Winery. Built by German immigrants in the mid 1800s, it is the oldest commercial winery in America (with its original land). Six of us stayed overnight at The Parkview Country Inn. Each couple received a discount on their rooms by eating an entree from the General Store. Present the receipt from lunch to the manager at The Parkview and your room is only $50 per night. The original structure of the inn was built in the early 1800s. It has 10 guest rooms. Each morning a full country breakfast is served in the dining room. A bountiful lunch and full dinner buffet is also served in the dining room.

I did not visit the 1811 Augusta Jail, but I hope to visit it sometime in the future. From the description in the brochure, it seems similar to dungeons in Europe in the Middle Ages. Thanks to Ray and Mary Anne for a very enjoyable time through Falmouth and Augusta.

Our tour on Saturday, March 23, had a good turnout and good weather. Thanks to Ray and Mary Anne Szeluga and Brad and Reda Leasor for a great tour. At the restaurant, I was introduced to Mark Kachler from Mayslick, Ky. He has a car collection display off US 68 to the right with a tractor high in the air. You can't miss it. He said his health is starting to become a factor in taking care of his collection, so he is going to sell his cars. He has a variety of automobiles and parts. His phone number is 800.264.6040; website is www.kachlers.com. Some of our members have been to his place on our past tours. Mark your calendar for our next two tours – April 13 for our tour led by Wayne and Myrna Wesley and Joe Vice, and the May 18 tour led by Jack and Linda Kubik. Let’s have a good turnout for both of these. Also, I’m looking for a volunteer to lead us to Clay City for our annual picnic and membership meeting on June 8. If you’d like to do this, just give me a call.

Thank You Note

I would like to thank all the friends who came to the visitation and services for Jimmy. The club was very important to us both, and we enjoyed our membership and made lots of friends through the club. It meant so very much to us both. Thank you so much to the friends who brought food and flowers and reached out by phone, cards or visits during this time. Also thank you for the club’s donation to the Lexington Humane Society. Sincerely, Patty Powell

2019 Wednesday “Night Out on the Town”

World Café Tour Begins By Jack Garabedian

Welcome aboard the Wednesday “Night Out on the Town” World Café tour. Travel the world with us for international cuisine that will delight your palette. In 2019, we will visit Europe, Asia, Central America and North America without leaving Kentucky. Your passport is your AACA Bluegrass Region membership. Our World Café tour will begin in Italy, the land of Rome and Julius Caesar, of the Parthenon and the Colosseum and ancient olive tree groves and, of course, wine and food. On April 10, we’ll meet at Bella Notte, a restaurant inspired by the Italian trattoria – a local gathering place for family and friends to enjoy honest, wholesome food. Remember, the Italians say, “You don’t grow old at the table.” The brainchild of Kuni Toyoda, a fixture on the Lexington restaurant scene for nearly four decades, Bella Notte is a true family business. Kuni’s son Kevin, is the executive chef and has trained at notable establishments in Italy, Japan and the Napa Valley. In May, our World Café tour will lead us to China, one of the world’s oldest civilizations and cultures. Food is an important part of Chinese culture, which includes cuisine originating from the diverse regions of the large country. Traditionally, color, smell and taste are the three

Page 4: Bluegrass Region of the Antique Automobile club of America ...€¦ · Gresham, Mary Ellen Lutz and Diana Hanks. (Left row) Nannie and Luther Fritts and Lo Arnold; (right row) Myrna

characteristics used to describe Chinese food in addition to the food’s appearance and nutrition. We’ll meet at Asian Wind Restaurant on May 22. This Chinese restaurant is known for its modern interpretation of classic dishes and its insistence on using only high-quality fresh ingredients. Asian Wind has a wide-ranging menu with something for everyone – chicken, pork, beef, noodles, house specialties and many seafood dishes – all delicious.
