Abstract

General relativity is a highly complicated �eld theory bothclassically and quantum mechanically. Even though a largenumber of classical solutions exists, a general classi�cation of thespace of solutions has never been achieved. These lectures brie yreview our current understanding of classical and quantumgravity in three spacetime dimension, general relativity in twospatial dimensions plus time. In three spacetime dimensions,general relativity drastically simpli�es, with no propagating localdegrees of freedom. Nevertheless, many of the di�cultconceptual problems of quantizing gravity are still present. Inthis review, I summarize the rather large body of work that hasgone towards quantizing (2+1)-dimensional vacuum gravity.
