Question: How are you adapting to life as a nightclub owner in La Cage?

George Hamilton: It’s a challenging role for me. In many ways, I’m envious of Chris Sieber playing Zaza because Albin is such a fabulous, flamboyant character. It’s seductive to want to be the farceur. Chris is so good in this: He gets bored with doing the usual, so he will change things around [in a scene]. My job is to be organically anchored to this—I’ve got to direct traffic through this whole story. I’m torn between my son and Albin. If I’ve done my job correctly, the piece takes on a profundity that’s got to be there.

Q: How is Christopher Sieber as an on-stage husband?

GH: He’s the on-stage wife; I’m the on-stage husband. Every night, I bow to him. I think he’s terrific, and I love working with him. We became fast friends. He’s played both roles [having done Georges on Broadway opposite Harvey Fierstein as Albin]. Initially, I would hear him say things and I’d wonder, “What is he mumbling?” But then I’d realize he was giving me my lines [laughs].

Q: What’s it like to be surrounded by this youthful ensemble of dancers?

GH: We’ve got some of the most wonderful dancing! These athletes are unbelievable. They are just incredibly kind and respectful to me—and protective. I love ‘em. Initially, [the ensemble and I] stayed at separate ho-tels, because I have places that I like in every city that I’ve been before. In the first couple weeks, one of the Cagelles had a nine-inch cut right to the bone in his foot, and he was back in the show a week later. Another one pulled his hamstring and was out for about two weeks. So I thought, I’m in the middle

of people who can really take punishment and go back in [to the show]; it would be best for myself to stay close to the theater. So I’ve kind of moved to wherever they go. I don’t want to be too far of a walk away.

Q: You’ve had a career spanning more than five decades, and you’ve worked in all medi-ums. What’s your secret?

GH: I can’t say that I started out wanting to be an actor. My father once said some-thing that I never got until years later: “Do what you want in life. Do what’s easiest for you, then work at it harder than anybody.” I thought, “What does that really mean?” I was the school clown. I was able to make people laugh at things that others took se-riously. The first play I did at school, I did just to get out of a math class. I was playing a young Russian student at Harvard. Well, I forgot my lines within two minutes, so I started pretending to speak Russian. Before I knew it, the audience was laughing and I got a standing ovation before the play was over.

Q: Cary Grant and Judy Garland. What are some of your memories working with Cary Grant and Judy Garland—two legends?

GH: [Talent] was just so born in Judy, there was no choice of how she had to do things. She had it. She was not a great beauty, but she was a great talent. One night at the Co-conut Grove, I saw Liza [Minnelli, Garland’s daughter] get on the stage with Judy and they sang “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.” I saw how tortured Judy’s life was. How after all the success, she was not

happy. She didn’t look well. She was a very lonely person in a world where many actors are adored for what they do, but they don’t have any life once they’ve done it.

Q: What do you remember about Cary Grant?

GH: I remember I went to see a house that I was going to buy; it was formerly Cary’s house. A phone call came and it was Cary. He said, [imitating Grant] “What are you doing?” I said, “I’m thinking of buying the house.” He said, “Why would you want to buy that house?” I said, “Well, it’s beautiful.” He said, “It’s not so beautiful. I’ve lived in it. Really, you wouldn’t like it.” I said, “Cary, I just came to see it. How did you know I was here?” He said, “I make it my business to know who buys what I have.”

Q: Sounds like he was pretty mysterious.

GH: From the very first time I met him, Cary was a very interesting man to talk to. But you didn’t know who Cary Grant really was, and he didn’t know who Cary Grant was. That

was the interesting part of Cary: He created a Cary Grant that everyone wanted to be. He started taking LSD. He took more of it than anybody. He searched the depths of his soul to find out who he was. I think Cary was be-coming a much happier man toward the end of his life. In those days, [the studio] would take someone and build them into somebody they weren’t. Somewhere along the line, you either went out living the character you’d cre-ated or you tried to find out who you really were and where that had gone.

Q: Do you feel you got caught up in the stu-dio machine the way you say Garland and Grant did?

GH: It wasn’t much different for me. I came in at the end of that era. The studio said to me, “We want you to go in this direction.” I thought, “This is great—wear an ascot, drive a Rolls, have some money in my pocket and date all the girls at the studio; this sounds good to me.”

Q: You’re an icon for what it means to be classy and debonair. What’s the key to being this way?

GH: Cary said to me, “It’s all about the shoulders of your suit. If they’re not made right, the rest doesn’t matter.”

Q: Nostalgia is really big box office money these days. Would you consider playing Zor-ro again from Zorro, The Gay Blade?

GH: I think I’d probably do Love at First Bite before I do Zorro. I love the character in Love at First Bite. He’s this old man who’s a great gentleman, but he just has this one problem: He’s been in love with one woman for 800 years. He’s the most faithful man on Earth. He has one little need of blood. Other-

wise, he’s just an incredibly wonderful man. He’s not of this era. I felt very comfortable playing that. Without the tan, I might add!

WHO’S WHO KALEN ALLMANDINGER (Blue Man) has performed with Blue Man Group all over the world. He studied acting at Chicago Col-lege of Performing Arts, where he worked with Lookingglass, About Face, and Chicago Shakespeare theater companies.

KIRK MASSEy (Blue Man) is stoked to be a part of the North American Tour with Blue Man Group. Has been with Blue Man Group since 2005 and has performed in New York, Boston, Orlando and all over the world as a part of Blue Man Group’s “How to be a Megastar” World Tour. Currently performs full time in Blue Man Group’s Orlando pro-duction when not on tour. Kirk would like to thank God for His many blessings, his friends and family for all of their love and support and everyone at Blue Man Group and NETworks who made this dream pos-sible.

PETER MuSANTE (Blue Man Swing) is a San Francisco-raised theatre artist educator currently based in NY where he collaborates on original works including Angel Reap-ers by Martha Clarke/Alfred Uhry, and his award-winning “kinetic poem” Legs and All with SF clown Summer Shapiro.

MICHAEL RAHHAL (Blue Man Swing). An avid chocolatier and fledgling camouflage-ist, Michael appreciates the subtle differences between you and him. Deadly with his dog and in love with his wife, he hopes you will stay just far enough away for you and him to remain friends, yet close enough to still smell one an-other. He will perform for you if asked.

BHuRIN SEAD (Blue Man) has performed with Blue Man Group since 2008. He attend-ed The University of Texas at Austin where he received a degree in human biology and an insatiable thirst to do something else. He loves eating his ma’s home cooking, biking and popping bubble wrap. His best friends are his wife Bonnibel and their cat Manny.

BRIAN TAvENER (Blue Man) from Ashe-ville, NC, has performed as Romeo in Romeo and Juliet and Dracula in Dracula. While not on tour, Brian is a Blue Man in Boston, MA, where he also runs an independent record label, Carrot Policeman Records, and plays in the band The And Company (theandcompany.com).

JuLIAN CASSANETTI (Music Direc-tor/Strings) started working for Blue Man Group at the Charles Theatre in Boston in early 2000. Starting as a zither sub, he went on to play guitar and zither for the “Mega-star” tour in late 2006. After touring for nearly two years he returned to the Boston show. While in Boston, Julian has played with many other bands such as The Lot Six, Viva Viva, and Drug Rug. He’d like to thank his friends and family for all the support over the years, and everyone at Blue Man Group for the opportunity to be a part of such a cre-ative and special family. Love love love.

JERRy KOPS (Chapman Stick/Strings) is a New York-based musician who is extremely grateful to be a part of the Blue Man Group family. He has been a Chapman stick sub in the NYC production of Blue Man Group since Fall 2006 and has also had the good fortune of performing as a rhythm guitar-ist in the Broadway musical Rock of Ages. Thank you to my beautiful wife Katie, mom, dad and our little four-legged boy Ziggy. I wouldn’t be anywhere without all your love and support!

MICHAEL A. PETRuCCI (Percussion/Kit) is a drummer of diverse styles. He earned a bachelor degree from Berklee Col-lege of Music and strives always to greater his skills. Michael began performing with BMG in 2004 and is excited about joining this tour. He’s also a drum instructor and a member of IATSE local 74. “No great thing is created suddenly” – Epictetus

CHRIS REISS (Strings Swing) picked up air guitar at age 6, playing along to Weird Al Yankovic. Soon after I was taking piano les-sons. Around age 12, I started my long-term relationship with the electric guitar. With much support from my family of pianists, I was sent to attend L.I.P.A. (Liverpool Institute of Per-forming Arts) before coming back to join rock tours in the states. Joined the Blue Man Group family in 2005 in Las Vegas after playing the circuit in L.A. for 4 years. BMG Orlando opened in 2007 where I transferred to and cur-rently reside.

RAMSEy ROuSTOM (Percussion/Kit). After moving from Syria at the age of six to the United States, Ramsey picked up drum-ming by age 11. By 18 he was accepted to the Berklee College of Music in Boston where he studied with great teachers as well as per-forming with faculty at outside gigs. Ramsey

TyLER SOLTIS (Company Manager) has over ten years of experience managing touring productions across the country and around the world. Past shows include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Magic of David Cop-perfield, Love Janis, Camelot, Oliver and Handel’s Messiah Rocks: A Joyful Noise.

LIZZ GIORGOS (Production Stage Man-ager) is very excited to be a part of this tour! Lizz has worked with Blue Man Group’s New York production since 2007 as a Stage Manager and lead deck crew member. Spe-cial thanks to her family for all their support.

STEPHANIE HALBEDEL (Assistant Stage Manager) is in seventh heaven to be touring the country with BMG. Other credits include shows throughout New York and the North-east, most recently Boeing-Boeing at Paper Mill Playhouse. A big thank you to her ever-supportive family, and to her NETworks fam-ily. This one is for Davey.

CHRIS WINK, PHILIP STANTON, MATT GOLDMAN (Creators). Longtime friends Chris Wink, Philip Stanton, and Matt Goldman founded Blue Man Group as a way to celebrate the human spirit through music, science, art, and theatre. After giving more than 1,000 performances in New York, the original three Blue Men stepped off-stage to focus on building Blue Man Productions into a successful global creative company. What started as a three-person operation has expanded into a decades-long partner-ship encompassing live theatre, Grammy Award®-winning original music, two rock concert tours, various children’s educational offerings including the founding of the Blue School, and multiple appearances on major television shows.

CHRIS DyAS (Artistic and Musical Col-laborator) has been performing and writ-ing music with Blue Man Group since 1997. Before that he played in too many bands to mention. His current NYC-based project is the Lingering Doubts.

He graduated from Pratt In-stitute with a B.F.A. in Painting.

MARCuS MILLER (Director) has been with Blue Man Group since 1995. During that time he’s helped create and direct 16 shows with them including the London, To-kyo and Berlin versions. They’re all a little different but this one’s the best. He lives in Brooklyn where he practices telepathy with his pit bull, Brooklyn. His other gig is as a Canadian.

JEff TuRLIK (Associate Creative Direc-tor) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and shortly thereafter began his life’s jour-ney on the wings of the bird we call music. Through many pathways and skyways he learned and performed, listened and ex-pressed, and lived and loved, occasionally making a little scratch. In Boston, 1999, he began his collaboration with Blue Man Group. He currently resides in New York City. Together they have seen many places around the globe. Shared many experiences. Rocked many houses. Tore the roofs off the suckers.

A little over 30 years later, Arlene now attends Broadway In Detroit productions with her second husband Mark. The two of them enjoy theatre so much that they seek out productions when they travel. “One of our favorite things to do when we’re boat-ing in Lake Erie or Lake Huron is to seek out Canadian regional theatre opportunities. We’ve seen quite a few wonderful plays by Canadian playwrights such as Norm Foster and others.”

In the mid 1980s, she moved her subscrip-tion so that she and Mark could have seats next to their friends Mary Hepler and Fred Gallasch. Like many of our subscribers, the two couples enjoy their trips to the Fisher Theatre together. “Our pre-show tradition is to go to dinner together at Cuisine, then while the guys are finishing up with coffee and settling the bill, Mary and I run across the street to the Fisher Building and the De-

troit Gallery of Contemporary Crafts. We’ve bought each other more than a few birthday and Christmas gifts in that store!”

The four of them enjoy all of the arts in Michigan, and have too many favorite Fisher Theatre shows to count. Among their top fa-vorites, Arlene includes Lion King and Aida, Mark picks Les Misérables and Miss Saigon, while Mary and Fred have enjoyed Phantom of the Opera and Beauty and The Beast.

They are looking forward to seeing many more productions together including their pre-show shopping trips at the Fisher Building.
