Reaching out to street kids

An update on the work of Blue Dragon Childrens Foundation

Vietnam June 2011

Outreach Appeal: Help kidswith no one else to turn to...Evey week, Bue Daon povides a hepin hand to

an aveae of 7 new chiden aed 10 to 16. In Maywe aunched an excitin Appeal, ookin to double the

numbe of kids we each and to expand the ane of

sevices we can offe them.

With moe funds, we wi empoy two moe Outeach

Wokes and buy a second hand ca. With exta staff

on the ound, we wi be abe to access kids we

coudnt each befoe. The ca wi be used to eunite

kids with thei famiies in the countyside and to

suppot them thouh foow-up visits.

Weve aeady aised a ot, but weve sti ot someway to o. We ae askin a ou fiends to keep the

suppot comin.So fa weve eceived 43,436 AUD in

donations, but we need an additiona 23,564 AUD to

each ou oa of67,000 AUD.

With a knack fo Enish, he aced his exams.

In fact, hes done so we that in 2010, aon

with two othe Bue Daones, Son and

Chinh, he was offeed a six month schoa-

ship at New Zeaands Nationa Technooy

Institute, studyin Enish and hospitaity.

Evey niht ou Outeach Woke, Vi, himsef

a fome steet kid, seeks out these vunea-

be chiden. He ives them cothes and food,and jokes and chats with them. If a chid is

in immediate dane, he takes them off the

steets to a safe home. Usuay, howeve, it

is a one pocess to et these kids home

Bue Daon eaches out to about seven

new kids each week and etuns about thee

unaways to thei famiies each month. In

May, we eunited 12 unaways with thei

deihted famiies. We ae cuenty tyin

to aise funds to buy a second hand ca to

epace ou cuent vehice and make it easie

to eunite unaways with thei famiies in

ua aeas.

Ou Outeach poam is the ony one of itskind in Hanoi. Most kids te Vi that nobodyeve offes them hep except Bue Daon. Atthe moment we ony cove cetain aeas inHanoi but we aim to empoy moe staff so wecan hep kids thouhout moe of the city.

A the kids Vi meets on the steets ae indiffeent situations and have diffeent pob-lems. Our job here at Blue Dragon is to xthese pobems, whateve they may be, and

hep these kids buid a bette ife.

I understand how it feels to live on the streetVi is vita to ou wok in hepin steet kids. He

is the one who nds those hidden children indespeate need of hep.

Vi has a specia insiht into the ives of steetkids, as he has been one himsef. He ew up

in the countyside and eft fo Hanoi at ae 14 toshine shoes to hep his famiy. He sept in a oom

with 20 othes o on the steets whee he otost, was beaten up on many occasionsand ived in a state of pepetua fea.

He was fteen when he met Michael,Bue Daons founde, and has been

a pat of the Bue Daon famiy evesince.

Thouh Bue Daon, Vi became

uent in English and nished his education. Heworked in a ne restaurant and a ve star hotel,isin to the position of Ba Supeviso by the ae of

22. But when Bue Daon asked him to becomeou Outeach Woke he coud not esist the oppo-tunity to hep kids ike himsef.

He took a hue saay cut and eceived tainin

in socia wok. Evey niht he seeks out kids BueDaon can hep usuay in the most daneouspaces in the city. He admits he is often at isk as not

eveyone is happy when a kid is taken off the steet.

Vi oves his wok with steet kids. He says: I wok

with them we because I used to be one of them.I undestand what they ae thinkin and how theyfee to be on the steet and how they see peope. So

it is easy fo me to connect with them.
