INTRODUCTION
Could a simulated brain start to think, feel and experience the world as if it were an organic, human brain?
Technology is growing faster than everything. If possible, IBM’s “BLUE BRAIN”, an artificial brain that can think, respond, take decision, and keep anything in memory, would be the first virtual brain of the world.
Is it really possible to create a human brain?
WHAT IS BLUE BRAIN?• “Blue brain” –The name of the world’s first virtual brain.
That means a machine that can function as human brain. • Today ,scientists are in research to create an artificial brain
that can think, response, take decision, and keep anything in memory.
• The main aim is to upload human brain into machine. So that man can think, take decision without any effort.
• After the death of the body, the virtual brain will act as the man .
So, even after the death of a person we will not loose the knowledge, intelligence, personalities, feelings and memories of that man that can be used for the development of the human society.
IBM is now in research to create a virtual brain. It is called “Blue brain “.
If possible, this would be the first virtual brain of the world.
WHY WE NEED VIRTUAL BRAIN ?
Intelligence ,Knowledge and skill of a person can be made eternal.
We can upload the contents of natural brain into it.
Things can be made easy as everything is automated.
EXAMPLES A very good example of utilization of blue
brain is the case “short term memory”. In some movies we might have noticed that
a person might be having short term memories.
A another situation is that when a person gets older, then he starts forgetting or takes a bit more time to recognize to a person.
For the above reason we need a blue brain.
FUNCTION OF NATURAL BRAIN Sensory Input :- Receiving input such as sound ,image, etc through sensory cell .
Interpretation:- Interpretation of the received input by the brain by defining states of neurons in the brain.
Motor Output:- Receiving of electric responses from the brain to perform any action .
BRAIN SIMULATION Simulating human brain by
reverse engineering & combining biological studies to digital technology using concept of Artificial Neural Network (ANN)

OBJECTIVES IBM’s blue brain project will search for insights into how human
beings think and remember. Scientists think that blue brain could also help to cure the
Parkinson's disease. The brain circuitry is in a complex state of flux, the brain rewiring
itself every moment of its existence. If the scientists can crack open the secret of how and why the brain does it, the knowledge could lead to new breed of supercomputers.
CURRENT RESEARCH WORK
• IBM developing the “Blue brain” .• IBM, in partnership with scientists at Switzerland’s
Ecole Polytechnique Federal De Lausanne’s(EPFL) Brain and Mind Institute will begin simulating the brain’s biological systems.
• Researchers at Microsoft's Media Presence Lab are developing a "virtual brain," a PC-based database that holds a record of an individual's complete life experience.
• "By 2047, almost all information will be in cyberspace including all knowledge and creative works, said one of the project's leaders, Gordon Bell.
REQUIRMENTS The hardware & software required to build a Blue Brain… 8,096 CPUs at 700 MHz each of which can map one or two simulated
brain neurons 256MB to 512MB memory per processor. 100 kilowatts power consumption. Processor with a very high processing power. 22.8 TFLOPS peak processing speed. Linux and C++ software.
UPLOADING HUMAN BRAIN The uploading is possible
by the use of small robots known as the NANOBOTS.
These robots are small enough to travel throughout our circulatory system.
Will monitor activity of brain by traveling into the spine and brain
They will provide an interface with computer .
BLUE BRAIN POWER Blue Brain will reveal many
existing aspects of the brain circuits ,memory capacity , and how memories are lost.
The modeling is also able to work out best way to compensate and repair error circuits .The blue brain model can be used to detect and test treatment strategies for neurological diseases.
PROS We can remember things
without any effort. Decision can be made without
the presence of a person. Even after the death of a man
his intelligence can be used. Improvements in processing
speed and memory could make entire human brain simulated.
The activity of different animals can be understood.
Help deaf and mad people
CONS We become dependent upon the computer
systems. Others may use technical knowledge against
us. Computer viruses will pose an increasingly
critical threat. Possibilities of human cloning. If in future surrogates to humans are
developed then, there will be no human interaction and the world will run on computers only
APPLICATIONS Gathering and Testing 100 Years of Data Cracking the Neural Code A Foundation for Molecular Modeling
of Brain Function Understanding Neocortical Information Proc
essing A Novel Tool for Drug Discovery for Brain
Disorders A Global Facility A Foundation for Whole Brain Simulations
FUTURE PERSPECTIVES Prosthetic devices to restore vision,
hearing or limb control might be the next step.
Further in the future, the real dreams would be the realization of the “brain-in-computer and chip-in-brain” arrangement.
Creating Surrogates This is just ’blink of an eye’…there’s lot
more to come…
CLOSING THOUGHTS Very soon this technology will be highly
accepted whole over the world but wisdom lies in right use.
“Technology does not create Brain but Brain creates Technology”
We will be able to transfer ourselves into computers at some point & this is just the beginning……..!
