Committee SessionsPreface

Notwithstanding the number of excellent Society publications available, it has been all too obvious thatwhen members gather for informal sessions together, be it at the Collogue or in the bar at Melrose, etc.,we do not have a Lowland repertoire in common and the tendency has been to fall back on the oldhighland favourites. Now many of these tunes are excellent but they are not why many members joinedthe Society. In an attempt to address this problem, Committee members and a number of other ‘worthies’ were eachinvited to nominate 10 tunes which could form the basis of a common repertoire. This book presents theresults of that exercise. It is not for sale, because it duplicates much of what has already been published, but will be used at a number of Society events. As for the few tunes which are clearly not of Lowland origin, and the deviation from previouslypublished settings, they should be put down to ‘editor’s prerogative’. A few harmonies are provided:that for ‘Go to Berwick, Johnnie’ is a variant of Jock Agnew’s, the others are down to my own hand. Iwould also note that the sequence of Burns’ tunes starting with ‘Coming Thro’ the Rye’ forms a niceset which goes down well at Burns suppers, etc..
