  • ItsbeennearlysixyearssincetheveryrstissueofBL!SSS hit the streets, and our June 2013 issue is gonna be number 70. Wow, weve seen a lot of content, worked with a lot of great people and have had and continue to have the most amazing advertisers anyone could ask for. That being said, were gonna do number 70 right and host a summer kickoff/issue release party at the Observatory, June 1st. We plan on going all-out and have DJ Kynan, DJ Grizzly Records, Mrs Magician, Zig Zag,Tomorrows Tulips, Gap Dream, Cosmonauts and other special guests on the bill so you wont wanna miss it. Its an all-ages show and invite-only so we highly suggest you do yourself a favor and RSVP at [email protected]. Did we mention its also the Annual Bikini Preview issue, so expect to see some skin.

Ourofceispracticallyanigloo. Were talking frigid temps when the suns not out. But now, thanks to our pal Frank Mchenry at Kombi, our hands will still be able to hunt and peck no matter what the weather does. Frank sent us a few fresh sets of Kombis Touch Sensitive Gloves that work like a charm. Whether youre working in harsh conditions or enjoying the outdoors, these gloves will have you covered with style and comfort that goes a long way. Were enjoying our new gloves and recommend that everyone look for their products at your local sporting goods store or visit kombisports.com.

Flip has brought on New York-based artist Jon Contino to spice up a few of its decks and tees, and believe us when we say that these things are looking pretty damn fresh! Contino takes new artistic touch and adds in an old-style feel that highlights the already insane Flip pro line up of skate decks. Our personal favorite is the signature Rowley Know All, but the Contino series has plenty of options with seven unique team decks for you to choose from. Whether youre looking for a fresh t-shirt, a piece of art to hang on your wall or a bitchin new deck, the Flip X Contino series will have you covered. Head down to your local skate shop to get your hands on one of these gems or visitipskateboards.com.

OURCASTEA bunch of talented, young, hungry, intelligent friends got together and gained support from one of the most iconic, legendary humans in our industry, Michael

Thomson, and OurCaste was born. A surf, skate, motorcycle-inspired apparel brand that appeals to the ordinary person, this group of friends has just begun a journey of what were sure will become a long, successful business venture. Head of sales Matt Davis and designer Mike Quinones took a few minutes from their busy schedule to give us a sneak peak of the new collection theyve been so diligently creating. Wow, we think youre gonna be impressed. Keep your eyes peeled for OurCaste gear popping up everywhere on everyone really, really soon.

  • The folks at Dizm Eyewear have taken notice of the toll our beaches are taking from trash pollution day after day, and instead of sitting back and letting this tragedy unfold theyve started a new movement called Dizm Dayz. Dizm Dayz is an environmental movement that everyone canparticipatein.Allittakesisveminutesofyourdayofpickinguptrash when youre visiting the beach. Dizm team rider Chris Waring has made it a part of his daily surf routine and now we all can too. This is an easy, green practice to take part in that BL!SSS is fully backing. So, next time youre checking the waves, walking off the beach or just hanging out make sure to take 5 minutes to help beautify your local beach. Check out dizmeyewear.com for all things related to these eco-friendly eyewear visionaries.

Weve always been a fan of the saying wood looks good, but this Northern California eyewear brand has brought that adage to a whole new level. Woodzee frames are made out of 100% wood, for an all-natural, eco-friendly look thatll have just about everyone asking, Who makes those shades? Our friend Andrew Delgado was the one who introduced us to the Woodzee brand and weve been wearing them ever since. All of their shades are pretty snazzy but the ones that really got our mouths watering were the Skateboard Series. Made from recycled skate decks and multicolored, these things are hot!

  • Our friends Chase and Brandon just started up PorroVita, a new juice bar right down on the Newport Beach peninsula. PorroVita offers a wide range of tasty juices such as Luv-Ur-Liver and the Green eLemonator that will cure just about anything from a nasty hangover to a mild cold. They also have creative smoothies and acai bowls, making it the perfect completion to any day at the beach. PorroVita also has what many other juice spots lack a relaxing and quiet hangout environment. They look to support local artists byshowcasingtheirworkintheshopandwevedenitelymadeitahabitto make the long walk over there and enjoy their healthy juices. Next time you are in the area be sure to swing by the corrugated steel building at 3000 Newport Blvd.

Anyone who didnt spend Cinco De Mayo on Catalina last year missed one hell of a good time. But dont fret, the boys at Riviera Skateboards are doing it again and are holding their downhill race event over May 4th and 5th for what will be the 2nd Annual Catalina Islands Classic. Made for the spectators, expect to see high-speed action on the hills, an on-the-sand movie from last years event, live music, girls in bikinis and a bunch of extracurricular activities.

We decided to have another run of t-shirts made and enlisted in the help of our good friend and artist Evan Rossel, aka Stink. Evan put his own creative signature spin on the BL!SSS logo, Danny Nichols and the Inkwright crew did the screen printing for us and the tees have been yingofftheshelveseversince.Weknowthatnoteveryonewillbeableto get their hands on these limited-edition tees, so we wanted to reward some of our loyal readers by giving one away to the most diehard BL!SSS fan out there. • So, you shot a cover of DaneforStab.Howdidthat go down? The guys at Stab hit me up with the idea and I was super stoked. When it got closer to actually doing it I got super nervous, because Ive always just taken photos for fun not for an actual shoot. It ended up being sick in the end. Dane was mellow and made it a lot more fun.

Howlonghaveyoubeengetting down on the other side of the lens?Ive been into taking pictures andlmingstuffforawhilenow, but it has always just been for fun. I really enjoy doing it when Im on the road. It gets my mind off of surngandletsmehavefundoing something else.

Who are some photographers that you look up to?There are a lot of guys that I look up to for photos. A lot of people see something totally different when they look through a camera. I have always looked up to Daniel Russo because I like the eye that he has for things and where he positions himself in the water. Other people that I look up to are Todd Glaser and Terry Richardson. They are totally different types of photographers but thats why I like them.

What is your ideal camera setup? My favorite setup for taking pictures would be my Leica M7 with my 35mm F/2. I like that lens because of the fact that its really a good lens for anything. You can shoot anything from landscapes to portraits with it.

So, Ive seen some pretty sick portraits that you shot. Whose portrait do you want to shoot in the future and why?Portraits are always fun to shoot; you get peoples different expressions in front of the lens. I think if I could shoot anyone itd probably be some super hot girl like Kate Upton or something!

Whats the deal with your dark room? The dark room setup was an idea I came up with because I always wanted to develop myownlmandprintit, andthis seemed like a great time to do it since Im injured and have nothing better to do. So, then I asked Peter King and he directed me to you. You guys helped pull the whole thing together within a couple of days somehow! (laughs)

Whens the show?We were thinking of doing a show toward the end of the year when everyone gets done with traveling and has their best photos.

  • Based out of Toronto, Jen Mann is an emerging Canadian artist. She received her BFA from OCAD in 2009, and is now represented by Neubacher Shor Contemporary in Toronto. Her work mainly focuses on the subconscious, soul, identity, and the way they interact to form meaning, beauty and nonsense in everything and nothing. Manns workisinuencedlargelyby photography, digital manipulation and our interaction with color.

Inspired by the circus, illusions, dreams and the innocence and playfulness of childhood, Jens body of work entitled Strange Beauties explores beauty and its fringes. In my newest series of works I challenge limitations to acceptable beauty, Mann says. Limitations are death to creativity. The idea of being wrong is also a sort of death. The idea of wrong is something that intrigues me: wrong, non-sense, things that dont belong,

colorsthatdontquitettogether. The idea that something can be wrong makes me want to see what kind of magic lies behind the world of no, bad and mistake.

Mann, analyzes off shots, or photos which did not turn out, unveiling beauty inside these images. This, in effect, captures honest moments between Mann and her subjects and alludes to a sincere relationship between the artist and model. The paintings in this series

evokeanaveandunlteredsense of beauty akin to that experienced in childhood. Using color and saturation to foreground elegant and alluring elements in otherwise odd and unglamorous images, Mann captures the world through rose-colored glasses. An intense stare, a blink, a sideways glance and in some works, the collision of these gestures create a deep sense of intimacy and honesty amidst the surreal images. Be sure to check out more of Manns work on her website jenmann.com.

  • IrstmetartistAndrewPommier back in the winter of 2007. We had mutual friends, and he had asked me if I would like to go to an underground club with him after the bar was closed. Not really understanding what I was getting myself into, I happily agreed and as we nishedourpineappledaiquirisAndrew began to explain how this club had been changing his life. Two nights ago I dreamt ofthecolorpinkforthersttime in nine years. For at least vehoursstraight.Iknowhowlong it was cause I looked at my watch. I asked if it had any movement, or variations in color to which he replied, No, but listen to this: Yesterday night the pink turns into a dark blue, and for six hours the silhouette of a man kept appearing and every time I almost saw his face, there would be some abrupt interruption, like a bird wouldyintothewindowpane

or a ghost would cough so loud that it would shatter my eardrums. It sounded to me like Andrew had been suckling on the forbidden teet of the Jesus-juice too long. Then, last night, I had this visualized notion of how sounds inform human and animal life, and how we need to destroy Mother Nature from within her bone marrow.

Andrew as a person was far more troubled than I had previously thought. This all seemed disturbing to me because the Andrew I knew in the past was a very polite man, who loved drawing in his sketch books, making oil paintings, and was an avid stamp collector. One time he showed me his stamp of GG Allen vacuuming a dog. The Andrew I knew loved to drive his garbage to the dump every Sunday on his Segway.

As we exited the bar and started walking down the street Andrew began to tear up, Here, he said, You need to take these from me. He handedmeaoppydiskthathad ancient Sanskrit symbols of vowels that had been produced by a tonoscope. I couldnt help but to ask what was on the disk. These are 700 pictures of the worlds sexiest penguins. Two of them I had the chance of meeting, no word of a lie, buddy. I was speechless. There is no way he had met two of these penguins, but I opted tonotstartaght.Threeyears ago today I was in Paris and I bought this at the dollar store, and the rest is history, you feel me home-slice? I denitelycould, deeply.Hiscompassion was overwhelming, and I needed to sit down for a moment. Come on, dont be lazy man, its right around the

    corner. You can rest there.

When we arrived, I wasnt sure if we were at a club or entering some type of jail. It was a shack in an alley guarded by two very short but extremely wide teenage boys. They patted usdown, conscatedourcellphones and pushed us through the door. We walked down a long corridor and then down and endless set of stairs. When wenallygottothebottomthere was a bunch of screaming men, drinking and smoking, and sitting on sleeping bags that were scattered around an eight foot pit in the center of the room. Staring in confusion and trying to make sense of what was happening, Andrew turned to me and said, Ive got $500 on the smoking rabbit.

  • HowlonghasBuellWetsuitsbeen around?I cut from my old gig at Hotline Wetsuits on 4th of July 2009. My own Independence Day, you could say. Buell Wetsuits was incorporated on September 9th; the same day we completedtherstBuellprototypewetsuit, which also happened to be my birthday. Also 9/9/9. Ive always had a good relationship personally with Volcom and they stayed true by becoming Buell Wetsuits very rstprivatelabelwetsuitaccount.Dingo was the guy back then, and I remember hand making his new CT suits at our newly formed factory in Thailand. We picked up Nike, Reef, and a European Brand named Protest before years end and were off and running. We also signed Santa Cruz local Austin Smith-Ford torepresentthebrandastherstpro team rider and the face of Buell Wetsuits.

Who have been Buells clients in the past?Volcom, Nike, Reef, Protest, Fox, RVCA, Oakley, Maui & Sons, Monster, Vans, Under Armour, Rusty, and the Santa Cruz Fire Department. We have recently expanded the factory and our production capacity, which will allow ustonallytakeonnewclientsthis year, whereas in the past weve been completely booked and backed the fuck up. We get a ton of inquiries, and we seem to be the only ones capable (with respect and exception to the super high-priced Japanese custom suits) of making small to mid-sized custom wetsuit orders. Besides that, our clients can actually talk to the guy who makes their suits, makes the patterns and overseesthenalproduct,me.We can surf together and discuss the details and I will always stand behind my product and make sure theirs is perfect as well. I think we

are the best private label option out there for all the brands that want to have their own branded suits but not incur the costs of having your own wetsuit division.

Howdidyougetintoannouncingand doing webcasts?Ive never been afraid of the mic. Ive been announcing Volcoms Santa Cruz surf events forever, and I used to perform with a good friends band, rapping and stuff, which is only relevant because its become part of my style when I MC. You could say I like to rhyme a bit. ItspartofmyowwheneverIhavethe mic, surf events included. I just love to make a good event even better. Now that I have a family and my own business keeping me busy, I only do the ones I really like.

What have been your favorite events to announce?Well, Ive been watching the Cold Water Classic in my own backyard of Santa Cruz since I was a little kid. Doing that one for six years was rad. The Mavericks event, a couple years back, was one that I will never forget, but hands down the funniest event to do has been the Volcom Champs down in Newport. I get to challenge myself and basically become an actor for the extended weekend. I get to do tons of different voices and accents. The themesandouttsareawesome.Everyone gets into it. Las Vegas, Wild West, Medieval Times, Pirates, Muscle Beach, Summer Camp, Woodstock, Wrestling, and my favorite Heavy Metal. I look forward to it every year. Tai Van Dyke and I are always roommates and we stay in character 24/7. My family is tripping when I get home and Im still talking like a Pirate. Arrrrghhh.

    Howdidyougetintothewetsuitworld?

I was splitting time between lifeguarding at the beach and managing Santa Cruz Surf Shop when an opportunity to use my artistic and design skills opened up at Hotline Wetsuits. I jumped at the opportunity and I was eager to learn. Problem was, there wasnt anyone to teach me. So I studied and taught myself. Ten years later I had become an eight-armed wetsuit monster. We didnt have a cad machine to do patterns, so I created my own program on Adobe Illustrator. I feel like that was the nallinkincompletingthewetsuitdevelopment circle R&D, concept, 3Drenderings,specications,construction, pattern making, qualitycontrolandnalproduct.I could take an idea and make it real in hours. I was now an entire wetsuits division by myself. Most companies have someone doing each of those positions. Sometimes I would wake up in the middle of the night with an idea, draw it out onpaper, gureoutthematerialsand construction, create the specications, andthenIwouldgo open up the factory. I would create the patterns, draw and cut the neoprene, screen the logos and have instructions for the factory workers on how to complete it and I would be using it that day at the Lane.

What are some of the coolest suits you make for people? Carissa Moores complete 2011 World Championship quiver, Coco Hos Beyonc-inspired booty suits, Hunger Games 2 prototype Neo/Lycra bodysuits, model Marissa Miller custom one-piecers, Ozzy Wrong Neo Motorcycle jackets, Nat Young Nike sweat-suit-inspired customs, Volcoms awesomely wild models, Bedes suits, Dustys suits, Bruces suits, Adriano DeSouzas suits. I love a good challenge. Ive

made some suits that Im not even legally allowed to talk about. But my favorite new design is for our own Buell team rider Raoni Monteiros own custom Monstro model. It has eyeballsandtomahawkfashionairpanels.

WasBuellyourrstchoiceonnames? No,itactuallywasnt, notatrst.Anything but my own name. The rstnameIwasstuckonwasREVOLT.Ilikednameatrst, butI had literally just left a company that I was with for 12 years because of artistic differences, and how long was I really gonna be feeling a name that means to renounce allegiance, or, to turn away in disgust? Im a much funnier company than that. I really like monsters, which is why Creature Wetsuits was an early favorite, along with MONSTR and Blast Wetty Co. But I think I was closest to becoming Rubber Bones. I loved the fun factor of it and the fact that RB are my own initials. Ultimately, numerous people I respect in the surf industry were all giving me the same advice; you have to be Buell Wetsuits. Im stoked. I even tattooed our company mascot, Static-B on my forearms. Ultimate proof that Im all in.

Howisitbeingbothafamilyman and a business owner? Its rad because my girls inspire me every day, my wife Taryn Buell, and two daughters, Talyn (9) and Chloe (4). I get power from their enthusiasm and energy. To know that there are three beautiful girls who support and trust me and my every move, their love is all I need to keep me motivated and focused on blending time for family at the same time as starting a wetsuit dynasty.

  • In this crystalline form everything is made of the multitude - the splendors of Versailles, the rearing stallion and other distractions or ambitions. A curious history restlessly shifting, its charged particles and reectionsdissolvingintoauniversalsomething.Itsmysticalalignmentordered by instinct or impulse where themes emerge through incoherent leaps and the vague impressions of something more about to appear or having just faded. - Jonathan Saiz

Countless Internet-culture sources, extensive personal travel and a generally short attention span (which promotes seemingly incoherent leaps in subject matter) make up the aesthetic foundation for this crystalline painting Centripetal Force and The Evening. Painted during a 7-month period of isolation on the island of Mykonos, Greece, in 2012, this painting is part of a larger series entitled Alkahest - so named for a hypothetical substance imagined by the medieval alchemists. This substance, Alkahest, was thought to dissolve all substances down to their base elemental purity resulting in the creation of gold. While it doesnt actually exist, its abstract potential was visualized while developing this particular style of painting. Alkahest is an experiment - a mixture of seeminglyunrelatedimageryinux, dissolvingandcrystallizingintoacomplex new narrative.

The concept of collaging disparate elements is by no means a new one,

but it has a renewed relevance as we all settle into this frenetic 21st century style of media-saturated living.

I think this type of painting speaks to the feeling that the world is no longer as simple and manageable as it may have once been, Saiz says. There are too many layers upon layers of information all competing to exist in the same space now, as our universal connectedness becomes more accessible and unavoidable. Viewing a single-subject image doesnt feel as familiar as it once did, even for me in my youth in the recent past. Noweverythingfeelsunsatisfyinglyatwithoutmultipleperspectives,non-liner narratives and overlapping concepts all rolled into one. And... I like crystals and sparkly things and I wanted to try to make my own.

  • Gage Thompson, like many of us, grew up skateboarding. It was only in 2008 that he discovered he had a passion for photography as well. No matter who he is shooting, he gives 110 percent to get the best images possible. He is very

dedicated to his work and will settle for nothing less than perfection. Gage is the kind of guy that will spend the better part of an afternoon encouraging you to get your trick even when youre frustrated and over it. Ive even seen him on occasion bribe guys with cash, food, beverages, you name it, just to get a photo. Gage is also the only photographer

I know that always has a tool, wax, laces, bondo, a sign, and a case of bottled water if you get thirsty, chilling in his car for you. If you ever get a chance to photograph with him, do it. • Zeke, growing up you were just a tiny little guy. Did you ever think you were going to grow up to be this massive dude?Well, mom said that if I eat my fruits and veggies then I will grow up to be big and strong. So, she shoved them down my throat and I guess it worked. But we all would like to think that we will grow up and be tall, dark and handsome!

You might have gotten half of those attributes. If you didnt surf do you think you would have played some serious football or basketball at your school?Yeah, I probably would have tried to play both football and basketball in high school in hopes to get a good scholarship and get into a good college.ButsurngiswhatIloveandthats why I do what I do.

Tell us about your school and why its so prestigious?I went to Kamehameha Schools on

the island of Oahu. This school is for kids of Hawaiian ancestry only. Besides that, it is a really hard school to get into. They only select a handful of kids from each district, based on test scores.

Howwereyourtestscores?I have no idea; you dont get to see them. Its written and theres an interview.

Were you nervous?Yeah, I was a bit nervous.

What type of dudes do you hang out with there? Are any of them going on to play sports in college? Most of my friends played football so I was just surrounded by football players. But yeah, most of them have gone on to play college ball.

You seem very hungry on the competitive scene, why is that?Yeah, well I guess I just grew up playing competitive sports so thats

  • kind of all I know. I was just brought up to have this hunger and desire to win. No one wants to lose but not everyone will do what it takes to win.

Give me an example of whatever it takes? Doing the work before and never giving up.

Are you trying to intimidate other surfers out there?Haha! No! But if I do then I guess its working.

Whatareyourgoalsinsurng?Well, the main goal in the future is to win a world title! But to get there I set little goals like doing good in juniors rstandmakingittoWCTthatwilleventually get me to that main goal.

Who do you like to travel with and surf with?Well, I have been traveling with Dusty Payne and Keanu Asing a lot and its

been really fun. Also I have been fortunate to go on a couple trips with Mason Ho and weve had some good times.

Do you remember that one time when you were 12 and the airlines dinged your boards on the way to Indo and you cried? Can I tell that story?Hahaha! You are just never gonna let that one go! And for the record, they BROKE all my boards, like buckled them all! How is that even legal?

Itsnot, butitstypical.Howmany tats do you have? Do any of them or all of them have any special meaning to you?IthinkIhaveaboutvetatsrightnow, but they all have special meanings to me. There is a reason why I got each one.

Which is your favorite? The Duke going across my right side.

I picked that one myself. Usually my dad helps pick them out with me.

You seem to have gotten them at a young age. Did your parents care?Yeah,IthinkIgotmyrstonewhenIwas 15 but my Dad was the one that took me to go get it. Cant say that mom was too happy about that one.

Whats it like growing up on the campus of that school and on the South Shore in general?I like where I grew up. My house is very central to everything and close to everything that I need. Growing up on campus has its pros and cons as well but it made me who I am today so I wouldnt change it for nothing!

You dont seem to fall a lot when youresurng.Doyoutakecalculated risks or is it because youre in damn good shape? Its all because I am in DAMN GOOD

SHAPE! Nah, Im joking, I dont know. I guess growing up my dad really used to emphasize on my falling and how I practice is how I will perform on contest days. So I guess just having that in the back of my mind will have an effect on how I surf.

Do you think you look like Obama when you grow your hair out? No,IdenitelylooknothinglikeObama!

Would you consider getting a tattoo of him on yourself? No way! Maybe if I was black, but Im not.

Howimportantisittohaveagood season every year on the North Shore?I think its really important. The North Shore season pretty much puts that stamp on the ending of the year.

Whats it like hanging at the

  • Volcomhouse? Its awesome. I love just hanging with all the boys at the house BBQ-ing and stuff. I love it!

Tell us about your relationship withDaveRiddle.Howimportant is he to your success?Dave Riddle is the only reason why I am where I am in my career. I dedicate my whole surngcareertohim.HeistheGodfather! Everything I know today is because of him. He found me when I was 9 years old and taught me everything I have needed to know. He is the man!

YouvebeenwithVolcomforalmost 10 years now. Are they more of a family then just a sponsor?Yeah, for sure. Once you are locked in with the Volcom family its pretty hard to get out. They treat everyone like family and its good to represent a company like that. Wouldnt leave them for nothing!

Tell us about the bet you had growing up with your dad?My dad would always shave my head when I was little and I asked him one day if I can grow my hair out and he said no. So I was like, Okay, right on. Then I

thought about it for a while and I just came out and said it. I was like Ok dad, if I win Nationals this year (2006) can I grow out my hair? And he said, Okay, yeah bet! I didnt win that year but we kept the bet until I won!

If you wanted, could you grow an afro? A lot of people think you should, including myself.Of course you do! But I dont really even know, we will have to ndoutoneday!

What can we expect from you in 2013?Hard work.

Gotta say that Park Blocks is my number one place to skate back in Oregon. Its a very long strip of about 20 blocks of just about anything you like to shred: manny pads, handrails, banks, ledges and my personal favorite a set of stairs in the middle of the strip. Its got two rails on each side with a curve set in the middle and you land downhill, which gives you a nice soft landing. So what contests can we expect to see you killing this year?I actually cant wait for the US Open course I didnt get to skate last year. The course was really good and it can only get better! Plus, the weather is unreal at that time a year! You said it brother!

So whats up with GoodLivin Co.? Thats a project that Lutzka put together. Its just starting out but its pretty rad. Hes got shirts, stickers, hats and grip tape. Good vibes over there.

I saw the GoodLivin premier video you put that together, right?Yeah man, it was just a bunch of party footy that I had collected over the years that I put together and it actually turned out to be a rad video with all the homies. Haveyoueverbeenarrestedforskating?Well, I guess so they really like to put you in cuffs and set you in the back of the car but most of the time they dont do shit.

So from living right across the street frombeautifulHuntingtonBeachandwithin walking distance from Main Street, is it easy to get lost in all the partying and drunk bikini chicks? Oh my, thats where you get arrested. Nah yeah, its constant temptation, especially around US Open time but its not a problem for me. I love skating hung over or not.

all this is constantly around you?Once youve been here for so long you get used to it and how to handle it. Plus, when I go out shredding with the boys they get me pumped to go harder, and most of the time we are outta Huntington. Whats the best part about skating for you? Ilovetraveling, thatisdenitelythe best. That and landing a trick you been workin on for fuckin hours!

Now I know you just recently came back from Hawaii.Didyouskateatallout there?Yep, my boy Apple Nuts showed us a bunch of spots out there. Ive been there a few times so its nice to go back to spots you skated before, get some tricks that you didnt get last time. What did you think of David Gonzales getting Skater Of The Year?Fuck man, that was heavy. He is well rounded and has good style, street and tranny, so he for sure deserved that! Plus, that double-kinker he grinded was pretty ballsy!Yeah, thats next level shit! Can you skate tranny?Yeah, I like skating tranny. Im not the best at it but I wanted to learn when I was in Melbourne, Australia, and we hit the skate park with a bunch of the boys and I saw Duncombe skating vert and he taught mehowtodo5-0staleshonvert.Thatwasmyrsttasteoftranny. So you like the taste of tranny?Youre stupid.

I know youve had several broken bones, right? Which one was the gnarliest or most recent? Not a whole lot, just my arm and thumb but the worst one was my arm. We were on tour in North Carolina, we were on are way to do a demo and we stopped to hit a street spot and I was trying a trick for a little while and ended up breaking my arm, which was by far my worst injury. Haveyougonebacktothat

spot and would you go back?I would actually go back to that rail. When it happened out there I said Im coming back to this spot, so if I ever end up there again in the future Ill be back at it.

If you suddenly died and had a choice of one place to skate for the rest of eternity, where and what would it be? Oh man, I would have to say that really long mini ramp they just built in that church in France. I think its the longest mini in the world, so good! So who do you normally shred with out here?Oh, all sorts of heads. I got my boys in LA when I go there, and I also have my SD homies who are the best to skate with, but if I am skating Orange County Im usually out with Greg Lutzka, Kyle Terbush, Dylan Lowell and Landon are my boys! Will you ever go back to Portland or are you now planted out here?I love Oregon for sure, its so good in the summertime but it really is a lot colder there than here. Maybe later on down the road Ill move back, well see.

I heard about Lewis Marnell passing, did you know him?Yeah, Ive known him for a few years. I hadnt seen him too much till the last time I was in OZ. He came out skating, so fun to skate with, very easy-going guy. I feel bad for the boys back in OZ though that were even closer to him. First Shane, then Lewis, sad day for skateboarding. They were good people! Of all the skate parks out here, which one is your favorite/most visited?Oh man, Im gonna have to say The Berrics is the bees knees, man, so good. And Stoner Park is a blast too. When is your next video part coming out?Im gonna put out a part in two or three months. Trying to get somethingshandledrstthatIreally wanna get done. • Integrating morality, technology and science, Australian contemporary artist Patricia Piccinini is constantly pushing cultural boundaries with her uber-realistic sculptures. Her sculptures nudge traditional barriers into new territory, where inventive and provocative meets totally weird and creepy. While some of her sculptures look as if it stepped right off its page in The Hobbit, Piccininis artistic weirdness makes her sculptures stand out in a sea of contemporary artists. Through her work, shes able to blend technology with traditional culture to make her viewers question and contemplate the relationships we typically associate with certain cultural aspects. And there isnt a mold that doesnt have you wondering what, why or what if?

When did you become fascinated with merging science and art and how did it come about?Strangely, Ive never been particularly interested in science. However, I did become very interested in medicine on a very personal level when my mother was suffering from cancer. Like so many families of people with cancer, our hopes and despair were tied very closely to the promises and limitations of medical knowledge and technology. My eyes were always drawn to media items that looked at new discoveries and possibilities in medical research, and in the 1990s I began to see more and more stuff about the Human Genome Initiative and tissue engineering and the like. It was also linked to these extraordinarily bizarre images of mice with ears on their backs and the like, which connected to my interest in surrealism and the like. It seems to me that science has very much replaced religion as the dominant discourse through we which we understand the world, but also into which we place our hopes for a better future. Its almost as if science gives you a free reign to imagine anything, which is really strange when you think its

supposed to be the most rational of disciplines.

Your sculptures are very unique. What has most inuencedyourwork?IguessIhavereallybroadrangeofinuences, rangingfrom art history to contemporary art, industrial design to contemporary media. Im always looking around. Ive always been interested in those renaissance Wunderkammers or cabinets of curiosities, where people collected vast collections of amazing objects withoutregardfortheirclassicationasartorscienceordecoration.Inoneoftheseyoumightndawaxanatomical model or a baroque religious painting or a giant turtle shell. However, ultimately I think what has beenmostinuentialformehasbeenanidea:Thenotion that art is about ideas rather than medium or production. I always start with an idea and then move on to what medium that idea might be best expressed in and then what or whom I need to make that happen.

Since you started to gain notoriety in the 1990s, how much progress do you think the world has made since then? Where would you

like to see progress in the next 20 years? Thinking about it, its surprising how little of the progress promised 20 years ago has actually come to pass. When I started to look at medical technologies in the late 1990s, research such as the Human Genome Project seemed to suggest that cures to so many genetically-based diseases were, if not just around the corner, then certainly on the horizon. While its true that we are so much closer to understanding those diseases than we were, the reality is that we havent seen many actual cures. The places where

    Words: Kelly Shannon

  • progress has been most rapid say GM foods or dubious patents on genetic discoveries are actually the most disturbing. I guess my idea for progress would be less GM soybeans and more cures for dementia and cancer. I dont think my perspective is particularly unique in that regard. Which current event has most inuencedyourartandwhy? There is certainly no one event that has inuencedmemorethanothers.Myworkis predominantly about the world I see around me. I am often inspired by things that I see in the media or stories people tell me, or things I come into contact as I travel through the world or around my neighborhood. Each work tends to be a reaction to something Ive seen, heard or read. While they have continuity, each has its own particular story.

    Havefairytalesandliteraturehelped

shape your imaginative mind? Denitely.Thereareacoupleofnovelsthat I return to again and again. Mary Shelleys Frankenstein is amazing, especially for the way you really feel for the monster. As I read it, its a story about a refusal of responsibility rather than hubris; Frankensteins downfall results from his refusal to accept and care for the monster rather than his decision to create itintherstplace.Hisproblemisthathe is a bad parent. This is an idea I often revisit in my work: How will we deal with the failures and imperfections of the new worlds we will create? And indeed, perhaps the unexpected or unlovely results might even be

    the more interesting.

Your sculptures can be quite creepy looking. What have been the most memorable responses by viewers to your work?People often tell me that, but frankly I dont really see it myself. I would never createsomethingthatIdidntndbeautiful or wonderful in some way. I do understand that they are often challenging for people, but there is always something else underneath. The responses I love are the one where people come to me and tell mehowtheyweredisturbedatrstbutcome to love the creatures over time. I love hearing about that journey.

What do you hope viewers absorb

by seeing your work?I hope that my works

make people think and feel. I address quite a few issues in my work, but I try to make sure to avoid being didactic. Partially because I dont presume to have all the answers myself, and also because I dont think there are any simple easy answers to such complex questions. In fact, Im not even sure we should be looking to experts for the answers. I love it when people start to engage with the questions, and formulate their own answers and responses, and argue over them. I also hope that people see that way that emotions and empathy complicate and enrich these questions and answers.

HasAustraliashapedyourartistry?Im not really sure if I can judge that. I certainly dont think about being Australian that much. I guess there is a sense in my work of the creatures being outsiders, and a sympathy for that, which might come from my own experiences

  • of being a migrant. We came to Australia from Italy when I was seven, and I did feel reallydifferent.Australiaisdenitelyabitremoved from the rest of the world and its easy to avoid distractions here in my studio, which is both positive and negative.

    Which mythological creatures/beings are your favorites and why? That is an interesting question. When I thinkaboutit,Indmyselffeelingthatthere are so many actual animals that are extraordinary that I dont really think about mythological ones much. In many ways, the natural world is so amazing that it eclipses anything I, or anyone else, could ever think up. I made a sculpture recently called Eulogy that features a man holding thisstrangepellucidshwithabizarrelyhumanface.Thisshisnolessweirdandchimeric looking than any creature Ive everinvented,butitisagenuinesh;

theblobsh.Thisshlivesinthedeepestoceanswhereitsurvivesbecauseitsaccidbody is slightly less dense than seawater and so it isnt crushed. The adaptations in actual animals are as inspiring me as any chimerafrommythorsciencection. What are you currently working on?IjustnishedatbigsoloatHaunchofVenison in London, and now Ive got a solo project at the Kaunas Biennale in Lithuania in autumn. I also have a couple of lovely group projects, one at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei as well as a really interesting show called The Nature of the Beast at the New Art Gallery in Walsall in the UK. Probably the most exciting project however is a commission for the Centenary of Canberra called the Skywhale. This is a massive, 25-meter-long aerial sculpture it is actually a functioning hot air balloon that takes the form of one

of my creatures. We are taking it out for its maidenightnextweek.

With technology playing such a central role in her artwork, Piccinini explains, Certainly technology is a critical aspect of my practice, on both a formal and conceptual level, butIdonotliketothinkitdenesmywork.Rather, ideasdenemyworkandtechnology transforms those ideas into a lived experience.

Born in Sierra Leone in 1965, Piccinini and her family moved to Australia in 1972. She graduated with a Bachelor of Economics degree from the Australian National University and later received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne in 1991. Her work began to gain recognition and notoriety in the 1990s. In 2003, Piccinini was selected as the artist to represent Australia at the Venice Biennale.

  • Eddie Vedder: Thats one of my most favorite rock and roll shots. Its iconic and it sums up Eddie. He loves jumping; hes fully Pete Townsend. I got that when he was in San Diego for his Ukelele tour. He had one song that was rock and roll and it was his last song, and when he jumped I snapped this shot. I was like, I didnt just get that, did I? And then I saw the shot and was like, Holy shit!

Tanner Gudauskas: Thats Tanner at their apart-ment above Snapper Rocks. I never put people in direct sunlight ever. Im always looking for places where light is kind of bouncing into stuff. We got into this killer hallway and he was just climbing up the thing like that.

Andy and Bruce Irons: That was in Tavarua in 2008 dur-ing the Globe con-test. I was just over at Andys bungalow trying to get some portraits and Bruce came back and I went, Hey, lets do a photo of you guys together. And Bruce was like, Ok, fuck it. Bruce goes over and stands next to Andy and I shot one frame before Bruce went, Fuck, Im over it. He walked away and all I got was that one photo.

Cabo: Thats on the road out to the East Cape near San Jose by Cabo. I just love that zone down there. I love that because you can see a tropical storm coming in off the mainland.

Wolfmother: Thats Wolfmother in Byron Bay two years ago. They played the ASP banquet and just rocked the place. I met them through Taylor Steele. Im pretty lucky to have people that have opened up doors for me through past work.

Andy paddle out in Puerto Rico: Thats a very emotional photo for me because it was so surreal that day. I didnt know if I wanted to paddle out that day or if I wanted to shoot pho-tos. I felt that for Andy I needed to shoot it. You can see by the looks on everyones faces that we were still in a state of shock and the sky is re-ally dark and ominous.

John John Florence: That was shot in Queen-sland last year at his apartment above Green-mount. We shot this in the parking garage. I was looking for interesting low light, thats kind of how I do portraits. When you think about it hes probably the top surfer/skater in the world right now and hesgoingtotakesurngtothenextlevel.

  • Dane Reynolds: Thats Dane in France like four years ago. We were having late-night beers out-side. This photo is pretty rock and roll and kind of reminds me of like a Joy Division photo. I think this photo sums up being tired and on the road.

Kelly Slater: Thats the day after he won 10 in Puerto Rico. My family and I got him a Middle Eastern scarf because hes half Syrian. He threw it on his head and was trying to do ten in different ways with his arms.

Donovan Frankenreiter: I went on the road with Donovan playing percussion for him. We were in Belgium backstage with an hour to kill and shot like a million portraits in 45 minutes. It was like the most productive 45 minutes of shooting Ive ever had. Donovans one of my favorite subjects.

Parko: I love that photo. The day after Parko won the world title and I really wanted to get a fresh portrait of him. We met at the Turtle Bay and he brought his trophy in and Parko wore this t-shirt that I had done for Billabong that had Andy on it smoking a cigar. I brought a cigar and Joel really liked it. Hes one of my favorite surfers and probably one of the nicest guys on tour.

Andy Irons: Thats the last portrait ever shot of Andy. That was shot in France two weeks before he died. We were talking about Axel, who was due in a couple of months. Its total Andy with the Bob Marley shirt pretending hes smoking. Andy had an incredible sense of humor.

Steve Sherman: Thats when were in Belgium on the road with Donovan. We went to this World War I trench thatwasvemilesdowntheway.Theyrebuiltitjustthe way it was. It was a German trench that Adolf Hitler had served in, and it was this little acre plot of land. It was incredible walking through those trenches and imagining being in trench warfare.

  • Alongwiththefalloutoflmcamethedemiseofthesequence.Overthepastfewyearsitseemsthe media is less and less interested in running sequences, so we felt it was time to run an entire feature solely based around sequences. Recently the reader has had to rely on the video to prove the make of a photo or the landing of a trick. But back in the day the sequence seemed to be a common thing. Kids could study the tricks of their favorite riders and take them to the hill the next day to practice. If you open up a skate magazine you will still see plenty of sequence photos, so why has snowboarding started to deny the sequence? Snowboarder Mag runs the Sequence and Destroy page, each issue, which is always a favorite page to scan. But its just not enough. So, is it that magazines dont have the budget to run sequences because of the economy, the evolution of media, the Internet video takeover, or just the simple fact that we have forgotten the importance of the sequence? Sure, a nice full-page still photo looks pretty and all, but lets not forget about the importance of the core participation of snowboarding that wants to keep snow-boarding the way it was, and should always remain. Keep the sequence alive!Photos: Bob Plumb

Dubbed Los Angered, the shoe got a proper introduction into the world with a release party at American Rag in downtown Los Angeles. Its always hit or miss throwing a party right after work on a Thursday night, but the hipsters didnt disappoint and hundreds packed the La Brea store to show support and checkout Dions design skills. Afterwards the crowd relocated to a private, after-party location where more drinks were had, cigs were smoked and people let loose to good tunes and even better vibes. The overall feeling of the event was nothing short of amazing and kudos to the whole Globe team and Dion for a job well done. • For the fourth straight year Vestal has invited friends, retailers, athletes, artists and musicians to Vestal Village, a secret camping community constructed on a 40-acre ranch in the desert that coincides with the Coachella Music Festival. The mystical 72-hour event has grown from a small gathering of Vestal family into a self-fulllingprophecyfeaturinganeccentriccommunityofRVs,tents,livemusic,open bar, swimming pool, lake front lounging, unicorn stables, and so much more. Heineken, Sailor Jerry, Reyka Vodka, Milagro Tequila, Red Bull, Honest Tea, Zico and Aquahydrate hosted the all-day and all-night refreshments, while Zoes Mexican Restaurant and Pop-Chips provided sustenance to get through the day. Other amenities included the Mammoth Mountain shuttle bus, Paul Mitchell showers, BCBGeneration Beauty Bungalow, hula-hoops, kites, art wall and an army of pink amingos.

The outdoor Vestal stage was the focal point of the day party for the weekend and featured a diverse mix of live music from bands Golden Ghosts, Hindu Pirates, Golden Sun, Jeffertittis Nile, Magic Wands, Ragged Jubilee as well as DJ sets from Posso,

The clock struck midnight when Nick Waterhouse and his massive backing bandtookthestageunbeknownsttoanyoneintheroom.Therstfewstrumsofhisguitar transformed the dance party to a different era. When the soulful set came to an end, DJ duo Sex Panther made sure the dancing didnt stop until the sun came up.

The Saturday evening journey embarked with a DJ set by the honorary mayor of Vestal Village, Jesse Boots Electric Hughes, followed by an indie-hop performance by LA band Weapons of Audio. Just when it looked like the walls of the barn were going to melt down, LA Riots materialized on stage as a silhouette against a wall of light and lasers. • Everybodys got that friend. The friend that always has great new music. And no matter how hard you try to introduce them to a new sound, theyve already been to the show, twice. Underground Lounge is a lot like that friend.

Underground Lounge is Mammoths brand-new live music and nightlife offering locatedinTheVillage.Afteradayonthehill, youllndanynumberofindustryheads stopping by for the craft cocktails and French-inspired comfort food in the dining room, but it is once night falls that the venue truly gets into form and the stage room beckons.

Underground Lounge celebrated its grand opening with SXSW and Coachella standout Robert DeLong. If youre not familiar with this guy, do yourself a favor a look up Jam in the Van on YouTube. This one-man show had the walls bursting at the seams in no time, and the capacity crowd danced the night away, waving glow sticks and reveling in confetti and champagne showers. At the end of the night, DeLong thought his set was over, but the crowd demanded more, and he busted out a special encore for the mountain crowd. Underground Lounge will be serving up live music and great DJs year-round, so next time you take the scenic drive up 395 be sure to pencil these guys in for a night.

  • The new Dirty Fences record Too High to Kross has a mess load of mind-blowing tracks of straight-up party-punk, rock n roll music. This is for fans of having fun and things like that. Dont buy it if youre scared. Below is our interview with drummer Max Hiersteiner.

So my name is Max. Your Name is Max, and there are two Maxs in the band? There are three Maxs in the band. There are four Maxs involved in this interview right now.

Shit that is awesomeYeah, its pretty funny. Usually I go by Hersh. Max Roseglass goes by Rose. We do that just because every time we are on tour and we meet somebody they are like, what? and get sort of impressed but also really weirded out. Weve heard all the jokes too. We just avoid it now by introducing ourselves by our last names.

Are you still on tour? You guys have been touring solid for a while now.We just got back from a full US tour. We started from New York and played about six or seven shows down the east coast. Then we toured from there to SXSW and played four shows there and met up with our buddies The Shrine. Then we drove from SXSW to their place in Venice Beach and toured all over California. Then we went up to Portland, Seattle, and Canada.

Thats a mean run...Yeah, it was pretty harsh in the van at some points, but overall it was pretty rad.

You guys are childhood friends from Boston correct?Yeah, we all grew up in Boston and we went to high school together. Jack the lead guitarist, Max the bassist, and myself. Then we all moved to New York and we had an earlier guitarist who didnt really work out, so we got a new guitarist Max Roseglass who was also

our friend from back in Boston. That was about two years ago and thats when we really started playing. Weve been going pretty hard ever since.

Being childhood friends I imagine you guys get at each others throats out on the road from time to time?Yeah, totally.Thereisdenitelysomesibling rivalry. But, surprisingly its a really great dynamic. When we do tend to piss each other off and get under each others skin we work up ways to tolerate it or, you know, handle it. At the end of the day its an amazing dynamic and we all get along great. Its really surprising. When we go on the big tours I get a little bit like, Man, I hate these dudes mid way through but then I realize we all just talk shit the whole time so it doesnt really matter. You cant take anything seriously. Were all just a bunch of good friends.

I saw you guys a couple weeks ago at the weirdest show in LA with some rap openers. I had a great time, but it was the strangest show. Istillamtryingtogureoutwhythat show worked out so well?Oh my god yeah, at the lyric lounge? I dont know how that worked out. We justwentwiththeowofTheShrinedudes who helped put it together. They dont usually have shows like that at that place. Its more of a performance theatre type thing I was told. So it reminded me of like a high school performance space or something. But, then it went nuts. The rap guys were doing their thing and kids were digging it and then we just came in and blew the place apart. Shrine dudes killed it after too. People were just stoked to party I guess. It was a rare instance of two completely different sets of music that worked out really well.

You guys are all pretty immersed into the skate culture. Talk about havingVolcomEnt.putoutyourrecord and support the band.

Volcom has always been a pretty core company for skating. It was something I wasnt hesitant about at all. They have really good skaters on their team. Remy Stratton does nothing but good for skating. He rips and is a big inspiration so immediately when Volcom heard us and were into us I was down. Being part of Volcom has been really sick because I have been able to meet a ton of people that inspire me music wise and skate wise my two favorite things. They really support what we do. They havent told us to change at all. Were just playing music that we have been playing since high school and they tune into it. Its an honor to be in the same realm as them. They have been really good to us and really supportive. Mike Nobrega, the head of the label, he is the fucking man.

The new record just came, so how has the reception been? Yeah, people really seem to really like it.PeopledenitelyhaveastrongerresponsetothisrecordthanourrstEP. We recorded that in like three days. We had the songs down, we loved it live and everything, but it feels good to have a little more time to work out all the nuts and bolts and nit-picky stuff. That is something we were able to do on this record. We had a lot more material too. People say its straight up rock n roll with good catchy hooks and I cant really ask for anything more than that. That is the kind of music I like to listen to. So, if people are catching on like that thenIamstoked.Itresusuptoworkharder and that is what we are going to do.

Thereisdenitelyalittlemorevariety on the new LP than the previous EP. What are your three favorite songs and why?MyrstisKingsKrossbecauseitsticksout the most out of all the songs. You know we all love punk rock, and rock n roll, and soul, and country. We have all beeninuencedbythatstuffanditfeelsgood to be able to slow it down a little

and be a little more intimate. The heavy stuff is what we love to play, but we like to play soft stuff too because we like to listen to stuff like Ramones, Here Today, Gone Tomorrow and Graham Parsons.

You need the soft one for the ladies too.(Laughs) Yeah for sure, thats not why we do it, but we love seeing the ladies melt live. We always throw it in the middle. My second favorite is White Lies because Max, the bass player, takes over vocals on that and he is the pop song master. My third is Whats That Strange. Little more Big Star inspired. My favorite songs are the songs that are a little bit slower. Its just fun to do it like that. I love them all, though. I cant pick a favorite.

The album art is rad. Who did it? Lets give that guy a shout-out.His name is Josh Breeden. He did a really great job; we went back and fourth with him about what we were looking for and what kind of stuff we wanted to do. He really came through with an amazing piece and I couldnt ask for anything better. Shout out to Paco from Levil Uniform for the photography on the inserts.

Who else deserves a shout-out?Shout-out to everybody that has been coming out to shows and buying our records, everybody that has been telling us to keep at it. Shout-out to our roadies Paco and Fritz for being on the tour. All the bands we played with on the West Coast; The Shrine, Glitter Wizard, Hot Lunch. All our NY homies. Toby and Jake Vest. Nick Zeeg! Volcom! We will be on tour in the summer months.

Thanks Max! Keep rocking in the freeworldkids!AndbuyTooHighto Kross by Dirty Fences out now on VolcomEntertainment!

We are really pumped that Cosmonauts will be headlining the bill and assaulting our faces with noise at the BL!SSS PARTY on June 1st at the Observatory in Santa Ana, CA. They have two awesome new 7-inch singles they just put out. The other is called Pure Posture and released by Trabajo Records. Pick them up at the show and dont miss the party!

Our main dude Evan Stink Rossell, a.k.a. the artist formerly known as Stink Finger, has been spending some time out in the hardened city of Detroit getting cultured and throwing up some bad-ass artwork. He came home and told us he landed the cover of former Gories member Danny Krohas latest band. WHATTT!! Eyes peeled for that one.

    KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW

The Observatory, Santa Ana, CAThursday, April 18th, 2013

The Observatory parking lot has never seen more hood-rat, hoochie mamas out and about strutting their stuff like it was a catwalk. That was most likely due to the coinciding 2 CHAINZ concert in the other room. That was rad; however, the real magic went down at this party in the Constellation Room. Too bad the hoochies didnt come get down on the Fish Fry with these crazy guys King Khan and Mark Sultan!
