NewYork,NY–FriedmanBendaannouncesitsfifthannualguest-curatedexhibitionentitledBlowUp.CuratedbyFelixBurrichter, the founder and editor of the architecture and design magazine PIN–UP, the exhibition will take theminiaturizeddomesticidealofthedollhouseandblowitbackuptofullsize.WiththehelpofdesignfirmCharlapHyman& Herrero, Burrichter will transform the gallery space into a Freudian trip through a 1:1 dollhouse, complete withbedroom,diningroom,kitchen,study,andnursery.

Throughout the exhibition, the art and design will bear the strangeness of their “re-rescaling” as simplified formsdesigned for aminiatureworld entering back into our own. Shrunken furniturewill be restored tomacro scale in adouble abstraction that leaves everything at uncanny and uneven. “Blow Up is a show about the aesthetics andmaterialityofscale,andhowtheobjectswe’resurroundedwithduringourchildhoodconditionourideasofdomesticity,taste,andsocialnormstoday,”statesBurrichter.

Blow Up is a dialogue between seminal designs from 1970s and 80s by Wendell Castle, Gaetano Pesce, and ShiroKuramata,withcontemporaryartanddesign,includingoveradozenworksspeciallycommissionedfortheshow.Artists,architects,anddesignersonviewinclude:

TheexhibitionwillbeaccompaniedbyasmallpublicationfeaturingtextsbyJeppeUgelvig,MicaelaDurand,andothers.AboutFelixBurrichterFelixBurrichterisaGerman-born,NewYork-basedcreativedirector,curator,writerandeditor.OriginallytrainedasanarchitectinParisandNewYork,in2006FelixfoundedPIN–UP,aself-describedbiannual“MagazineforArchitecturalEntertainment.”Inadditionto publishingPIN–UP, Burrichter curates exhibitions, consults on design and architecture projects for various design brands, andcontributes to numerous publications including W Magazine, Icon Design, Cakeboy, Fantastic Man, and The Gentlewoman.Burrichter has edited a number of design and art books including Cassina: ThisWill Be The Place (Rizzoli), Rafael de Cárdenas:ArchitectureatLarge(Rizzoli),PIN–UPInterviews(powerHouse)andPaulMpagiSepuya:StudioWork(Familiar).In2013hecuratedPaperWeight,anexhibitiononthecultureofindependentpublishingforthevenerableHausderKunstinMunich,Germany.In2015FelixcuratedtheexhibitionPavillonDeL’EspritNouveau:A21st-CenturyShowHomeaspartofthesecondAnnualArchitectureandDesignSeriesattheSwissInstitute,NewYork.In2017BurrichtercuratedtheSuperbenchesprojectinStockholm,aprojectforthepermanent installation of 10 public park benches commissioned by international designers, including PhilippeMalouin andMaxLamb.
