CAROL FELLERT H E D E S I G N E R

As I designer I’m usually involved at the end stage

with yarn. I find a yarn I like, pick the color I want

and work with that. Sometimes this works very well

but other times it leaves you longing for a little bit

more control. Working with The Yarn Collective has

turned the whole process on it’s head and allowed

me to be involved at the starting stages! This has

opened up a whole new level of design possibilities

for me right from the start.

Like most people, I’ve got definite color favorites. As

a designer you try to keep a balance in the colors

you use so that it’s not too unbalanced. Working

with The Yarn Collective has allowed me to play

favorites and indulge in some of my favorite colors

and color collections.

I also feel privileged to work with such fantastic

fellow designers to bring The Yarn Collective to

life and I hope together we can create a really

interesting and unique collective.

I’m looking forward to seeing what other designers

do with my yarn colors in the future, taking it in new

directions!

THE YARNB L O O M S B U R Y D K

Merino wool is famous for its richly deserved

reputation for softness – it is luxuriously gentle on

the skin. It reacts to changes in body temperature,

so it is an ideal fiber to wear all year round. Our

yarns are spun from the softest merino wool to

create a wonderfully soft handle that is suitable

for all types of knitting and crochet. The final spun

thread has been plied together with just enough

twist to prevent pilling but to allow the fabric to

softly drape.

“When it came to designing a set of color I

found that I think of yarn colors in groups.

Colors that work well together and enhance

each other. I began with an image or idea

for each set of colors and worked from that.

Each story also has neutral shades included

which create links between all the colors.”

BLUES | INDIGO, SURF, OZ & MOSS

“The first color story is Surfer Blue. I love both the

peace and ferocity of the ocean. It can move from

tranquility to danger in minutes and tosses up a

huge mix of blue and green coloring. The colors

that it evokes for me are a bright blue (Surf), deep

dangerous navy [Indigo], lighter green [Moss] and a

deep emerald green [Oz].”

7

FALL | COPPER, RUSSET & SAND

“My next color story is influence by fall, my favorite

season. As the leaves change from green to gold

they turn the most magnificent shades of orange

and copper. This collection of yarn attempts to

capture that range of color, moving from darker

copper brown [Copper] to a mustard orange

[Russet] and ending with a cool neutral beige

brown [Sand].”

FUCHSIA | VIOLET, SOOT & FUCHSIA

“I live in West Cork where the fuchsia flower is

often used as a symbol for the area. I love the

combination of pinks and purples in the flower so

this inspired me to create a bright pink [fuchsia],

a purple [Violet] and a more neutral grey [Soot] to

finish out the story.”

THE YARND Y E T E C H N I Q U E S

Carol’s subtle blended shades of close tones were

inspired by fuschias, surfer blue and fall leaves. The

dyer’s instinctive skills are critical as she works from

each dye bath to the next to create these stunning

tonal nuances.

Once painted, or kettle dyed, the hanks are

steamed to set the color then rinsed and softened,

allowed to dry, and then sent to the packing house

to be shaped into final skeins, labeled and packed.

KETTLE DYEING

TIP

Not all hand-dyed yarns flash or pool.

Flashing and pooling occurs when a color

knits up in the same area row after row,

causing a big puddle or flash of color. To

avoid pooling, alternate each from between

two balls of the same shade of yarn.

PATTERN DESIGNI N S P I R AT I O N & P R O C E S S E S

When I began designing with my own colors it was

hard to know where to start!

I wanted to show how the colors were designed

to mesh together so several of the designs use

a combination of colors that echo nicely off one

another. I also wanted to show the versatility of

the yarn by used a big mixture of projects and

techniques. This means that we’ve got a shawl in

a textured stitch, a hat that has some complex

cables and a tunic that used flowing lace. INSTAGRAM @ FELLER.CAROL

Russler is an oversized shawl that’s worked from

side-to-side. This shawl is so warm and snuggly

you’ll never want to take it off! The chevron stitch

pattern allows the colors to flow together in waves

that expand in width as you move across the shawl.

Dango is a combination of cable stitch patterns

that flow around the hat, creating a nice dense

fabric that is wonderful for cooler days.

Lignite is a top down a-line tunic that uses

combinations of lace bands and short rows to

create a flowing garment that will work really nicely

with skinny jeans or leggings.
