The Normal Rotary invites the Bloomington Area Career Center to be represented as guests in their monthly

luncheon meetings. The BACC students who are chosen exhibit citizenship, leadership, participation, and

scholarship in their BACC program. Students chosen will represent the BACC for the months of September

2018 through April 2019. At the end of the school year, the Normal Rotary will choose one of the monthly rep-

resentatives to receive a $500 scholarship.

Bree O’Neal

a BACC Student Ambassador, and SkillsUSA Vice-President. Bree plans to major in dietet-

ics or nutrition with a minor in business before opening a business with her twin sister.

From the Desk of the Director

BACC Normal Rotary Students

Greetings and Happy Holidays, As we near the close of the first semester and the calendar year, I would like to take the opportunity to share with

you the positive events and quality educational opportunities I have seen the first five months at BACC. BACC students are being exposed to careers and further educational opportunities—we have had many students out on field trips to businesses and postsecondary options, and many speakers in to share about their careers. Students are gaining new skills and polishing up on previously learned skills. This includes a huge variety of skills, from fixing laptop computers, to learning new software programs; from working as a team to learning how to put wall frames on a house to how to take vital signs and assess patients in an emergency situation. Many students have also taken advantage of opportunities for personal growth, including SkillsUSA, the BACC

Ambassador program, and job shadowing opportunities. A special thanks go out to all of the businesses and organizations that participate with BACC for various events such as the Career Expo, field trip and job shadowing experiences. These experiences are invaluable for our stu-

dents. As your son or daughter continue to progress through the BACC program, encourage them to take advantage of

the variety of opportunities offered to them at BACC and at their home high school. On behalf of the faculty and staff at BACC, have a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

BACC offers Cybersecurity Pilot Program

BACC is excited to be piloting a Cybersecurity Program, hosted in conjunction with ISU, and working with

a local cybersecurity expert. Students will learn foundation knowledge in networking technologies, basic

application design, attack vectors, protective technologies, and detective technologies. With these skills

students will learn how to determine deficiencies in both application and infrastructure designs, how to

prevent a security breach, and most importantly actually watch attacks, and then implement preventative

measures! This program will meet Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings in January, through

April. Students have applied for the program. Teachers from the region will be assisting with

instruction.

Bloomington Area Career Center Career Expo

The Bloomington Area Career Center hosted its 12th Annual Career Expo this past October, 2018.

Approximately 1,685 eighth grade students from all over central Illinois attended the event to learn about

different career paths, and what it takes to be successful in the careers that interested them. Over 55

businesses participated in this year’s event. Taking time out of their day, they helped educate students on the

different careers that their businesses offer through information and hands on activities.

Culinary Arts—Gingerbread House Extravaganza The Culinary Arts class worked tirelessly creating some amazing gingerbread houses for the Festival of Trees—25th

Anniversary auction at the Interstate Center for the weekend of November 16-18. The houses were auctioned off to

raise money for the Baby Fold. Our BACC students raised over $500 for the cause!!

Great job, Culinary Arts! We are so proud of you.

The Automotive Technology classes have had a busy Fall semester! They were able to check out a

Factory Five Roadster that was built by Universal Technical Institute students.

during a brake systems lab.

Right - Students work as a team to remove and

replace disc and drum brake assemblies on a lab

vehicle.

Fire Science - Hard at Work

Our fire science classes have been working hard at the surrounding fire stations. This fall, the

students spent quite a bit of time practicing with the hoses.

Student Ambassadors

Our BACC student ambassadors have had a busy start to the 2018-2019 school year! Student

ambassadors must submit an application to join and meet certain criteria to be involved. Student

ambassadors must maintain a letter grade of C or higher in their BACC course, conduct themselves in a way

that positively reflects themselves and the career center, and they must participate in two events per

semester. Way to go, ambassadors! We are excited to have you represent BACC this year!
