Westmoreland County is blessed and honored to have the number of businesses that qualify for “legacy” status.

Places like Ferri Pharmacy in Murrysville, es-tablished in 1962 by Bill Ferri, has provided help for a variety of health-related issues for 55 years. The pharmacy is located in the Town Square Professional Building, along with Ferri’s Shur Save and Village Hardware.

Sendell Motors in Greensburg has been selling and servicing vehicles for over 70 years and has been family-owned since its inception. Edward W. Mohler was the original owner of Mohler Motor Co., followed by his son William G. Mohler. In 1987, the dealership moved to its present location under the leadership of Bill M. Mohler, son of William G. Mohler. Bill Jr. and Chris Mohler-King are the great-grandchildren of the original owner, and oper-ate the dealership now.

Westmoreland Mechanical Testing and Research in Youngstown, just outside of Latrobe, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017. Donald Rossi is the founder and presi-dent and is joined by sons Michael, Vice-President and Plant Manager and Jim, Vice-President of Technology in the management team.

Michael’s two sons and Jim’s son are already working for the company and will continue its legacy.

Those are just a few examples of businesses that have positioned themselves to extend their legacy into the next generation and beyond.

One of those who’ll be carrying a legacy for-ward is Tom Charley, who along with his brother, Mike, have taken over the day-to-day of the Charley Family Shop ’N Saves.

The brothers’ grandfather, Mike, came to the United States from Syria 112 years ago and eventually opened a grocery business. Mike’s son, Ray, became the patriarch of the family and, ironically took a similar path to the gro-cery business as his sons. That makes them fourth-generation grocers.

He practiced law for a couple years before coming back to the business in 1979 to buy his first store. Both Tom and Mike left the busi-ness for a time before coming back.

“It was good to get out and see what the real world was like. It gives you perspective on who you are as a person,” Tom said. “After being referred to as the boss’ kid or the boss, you get none of that out there. I really did a lot of learning during that time. I always knew

I wanted to come back and work with my

dad and brother and wanted to do it sooner rather than later.”

Tom said it’s taken about four years for the sons to take over day-to-day and that could-

n’t have happened without some very good help.

“Dad’s counsel has been excellent,” he said.

“We’re learning our way through it and it’s

been a lot of fun. There are definite chal-lenges in this business. We face new compe-

tition every day and we’re always looking to keep our customers coming back.”

He said while he isn’t a parent, he’s definite-ly given thought to the day he is and the

legacy of the family business.

“It’s not going to be a thing of they have to

work in the business,” Tom said. “As long as

they’re happy and doing what they love

doing, that’s fine by me. If it’s in the food industry that’s fine, but it certainly doesn’t

have to be. I think we have a great legacy and I believe we are very mindful of our

place in the community and the industry.”

Brad Roth isn’t trying to sustain a legacy,

he’s trying to create one.

Roth is the President and Chief Compliance officer of Kattan Ferretti Financial L.P. He is

also an owner of Kattan Ferretti Insurance

Group, LLC which provides insurance broker-age services for individuals and businesses.

Prior to assuming that position, he was a

financial advisor at Bank of America Merrill

Lynch and was also in operations at a quanti-tative hedge fund.

“Richard Cassidy (President and CEO of

Kattan Ferretti) gave me the opportunity to

get started here in 2013,” Roth, a Duquesne

University graduate who has a Certificate in

Financial Planning from New York University, said. “I’m under his umbrella, using his office.

He put me in a position to expand my reach, to innovate and seize the opportunity.”

Roth, a member of the Westmoreland Coun-ty Chamber Board of Directors, realizes where he is in the “legacy process” and has his eye on the future. Even as his business has grown yearly at a double or triple pace, he’s confident it can be even better.

“One of the goals when you create a busi-ness is to create a legacy, something to build on,” he said. “Something that’s around for 100 years, something you can give to your kids and they can operate it.”

It’s an interesting confluence of businesses competing in the current economy while looking into the future and molding those who’ll be dealing with that future in the years ahead.

Meet our Member Spotlight for January: Anne-Marie Welty, Manager at Standard Bank, Greens-burg, located in Eastgate Plaza.

Anne-Marie has worked at Standard Bank for over six years and helped to open the Greensburg office alongside Carolyn Tlumack. She finds community banking truly rewarding, as it provides her with an amazing outlet for helping people. “I know that sounds so simple, but I truly do,” she explains. “Whether it be helping parents pay for a child’s education, a couple finance for a future wedding, or a grandparent opening a savings account for a new grandchild, I know that I have played a small part in making a difference in their lives. I also love working for a community bank that truly cares about giving back to our community.”

What does Anne-Marie enjoy most about her Chamber member-ship? She says, “I enjoy the opportunity of networking and meeting new businesses through the Chamber. Westmoreland County is filled with wonderful and unique businesses, and I’m fortunate to say that I can look back fondly remembering many from my child-hood. These are the businesses that have shaped our community, and I’m proud to now be part of the movement next to them.”

In her free time, Anne-Marie enjoys giving back through various volunteering endeavors. She currently sits on the Board of Directors for both the Blackburn Center and Greensburg-Hempfield Library, and is very involved with ‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes’ and ‘Library Libations’ - two major fundraisers for these non-profits. She is also a part of the South West Greensburg Civic Society and organized the SW Porch Crawl last fall. “This was a great way to get to know your neighbors—which I believe is a lost art—and the history of our neighborhood,” she shares.

Anne-Marie is also a self-proclaimed “crazy antiquer and has a booth at a local antique shop. She can often be found in a dusty, musty antique store or perusing an aisle at Hannastown at the crack of dawn!

As we begin 2018, the Westmoreland County Chamber of Com-

merce is proud to welcome three individuals to the Chamber

Board of Directors: Sherry Magretti-Hamilton, Westmoreland
