The Pigeon Game

I have decided to give the garden atnumber so-and-so a miss in future. When Ifirst came across it, I saw lots* of sparrowseating on the lawn, pecking* amongst theroses and sitting around the birdbath. Ithought it would be a good idea to go downand investigate. Well, I did not get a veryfriendly reception and I would just like allyou shorthand reporters to know about it,as I am sure you want a good story topractise on. As I was saying, I saw that thiswas a garden with possibilities*, so I flewin to have a look. There was no-one aboutand I cleaned up quite a few crumbs ofbread that the others had missed, plusthose bits that the sparrows had droppedunder the bushes by the fence. I thought,I’m* on to a good thing here and it might

be the right place to settle with Mrs Pigeonand bring up our family.

* "lots" and "masses" Insert the vowel, asthese are similar in shape and meaning*

* “pecking” Helpful to insert the vowel, soit is not misread as "picking" which has asimilar meaning

* "possibilities" Optional contraction

* "I'm" Write the vowel separately, asjoining it would be the phrase for "I am".Similarly, separate vowel sign for "I'll", todifferentiate it from "I will"

The Pigeon Game

That was a little while ago and we bothenjoyed several reasonable meals beforethe sparrows could swoop* in. But recentlyas I came out of the greenery I wasabsolutely shocked to be chased off bysomeone waving a newspaper at me. I tellyou, I got out of there as quick as a flash.The pesky person went back inside thehouse and as there were still a few crumbsvisible in the centre of the lawn, I flew backdown. I was just about to peck* at the firstcrumb when I was chased off again. Wekept up this ridiculous game for a while,and eventually I got just three crumbs, but

finally had to wait on the roof and watchthe sparrows finish it all. But this placeseemed to be a good one to put on myReturn Visit list (pending confirmation, i.e.more quantity) so I decided I would tryagain at intervals.

* "swoop" Insert the vowel, as "sweep"would also make sense

* "peck" Helpful to insert the vowel, so it isnot misread as "pick" which has a similarmeaning

The Pigeon Game

Next day I saw two wood pigeonswandering around and I thought, hey it’s allon again, let’s go down and have a quicklook. But no, hardly anything left of adecent size. I walked up and downchecking the long grass for missed pieces.Then I noticed someone sitting in thegreenhouse. They looked up and saw me,and came at me with what I now know is afluffy nylon duster, but as far as I couldmake out at the time, it looked like a

bundle of stolen feathers from someunfortunate* victim, so I flew away reallyquickly. I’m here to tell you it really put thefrighteners* on me. Even from the safety ofthe neighbour’s roof, seeing it being wavedabout was really scary and my heart waspounding ten to the dozen.

* "unfortunate" Optional contraction

* "frighteners" Not in dictionary

The Pigeon Game

Somehow the food supply in this gardenseems to have* vanished. I see singlepellets being thrown at the new parentsparrows who are hopping about excitedlyon the rose branches outside the kitchenwindow, but as each pellet seems to bemagnetically attracted to one particularsparrow, I never stand any chance ofgetting one. The odd peanut appears butthat also always lands at the feet of one ofthe collared doves so I never get a look in.An occasional piece of soaked stale breadlands right in front of the blackbird, who is

very territorial and possessive at themoment*, so nothing for me there. We didhave a good day recently sunbathingundisturbed on the garden path, but asthere was no prospect of lunch afterwards,we will probably not be making it ourregular lounging* spot.

* Omission phrases "seems (to) have" "at(the) moment"

* "lounging" Insert vowel, as it could bemisread as "lunching"

The Pigeon Game

All I can do now is to wait until there isabsolutely no-one about, and then scout*round to clear up. Unfortunately*, theofferings are not enough for us, there areno reasonable sized pieces to be found, andafter a minute or two of wandering up anddown, it seems to me* that this is acomplete waste of time*, especially as Imight be missing something moresubstantial in another garden. So despite apromising start, this particular garden isnot really a good place for me or MrsPigeon, all the future baby pigeons and allour numerous friends and relatives. Wehave decided to hang out somewhere elsewith better prospects and have given up onthis location. A terrifying duster plus a

hungry tum is just too much* to put upwith. But I still can’t work out why we werenot made as welcome as the other birds.It’s a complete mystery. (765 words)

* "scout" Insert vowel, as "scoot" couldalso make sense here

* "unfortunately" Optional contraction

* Omission phrase "seems (to) me""was(te of) time"

* "too much" Full form for "much" to jointhe phrase, and also helps differentiatefrom "too large"

Steam Fairground

Last weekend we went to see Carter’sSteam Fair which was set up in Bel Air Parkin Dulwich, South London. As we got off thetrain, immediately we could* hear thefamiliar organ music drifting over the treesat the edge of the park. We exited thestation, went over the pedestrian crossingimmediately outside and a short walk pastthe tennis courts brought us to thewondrous sight of a large collection offairground rides from the past, allassembled on the grass in a corner of thepark* and in full operation. The first thing I

noticed was the faint aroma of oil andsmoke wafting past occasionally, which setit apart from other ordinary fairgrounds,enough to give an air of historicalauthenticity, but not so much* as to spoilthe fresh air and sunshine.

* "we could" Not phrased, so that it doesnot look like "we can"

* "so much" Full form for "much" to jointhe phrase, and also helps differentiatefrom "so large"

As well as the patterns*, there arecountless cameo portraits of figures fromhistory, the music world (to match themusic being played on each ride) and otherrelevant pictures to enhance the attraction.The Dive Bomber and Chair-O-Planes* hadpictures of early aeroplanes*, the targetshooting galleries had a native American infull head-dress or African animal safaripictures. The Ghost Train had the usualscary characters. I was reminded of thepast when we used to try and peek throughthe doors as the car went through but wecould* see nothing, as there are doubledoors to go through and one has to makedo with listening to the rattling rails, the

scary siren sounds and the occasionalshriek from a passenger.

* "patterns" Keep the P clearly halved, toprevent it looking like "appearance" whichalso makes sense in this context.

* "Chair-O-Planes" Not in dictionary. It isclearer to write full strokes for "chair"rather than use the short form.

* "aeroplanes" Insert the vowel after the P,to differentiate it from "airplanes"

* "we could" Not phrased, so that it doesnot look like "we can"

Steam Fairground

This is a traditional funfair, begun in 1976,made up of rescued and renovated steam-powered rides dating from the first part ofthe twentieth century. The magnificentJubilee Steam Gallopers ride dates from1895 with a 1900 Gavioli organ providingthe music. I was delighted to see manyrides that I recognised from my own* past,although at that time they were generator-powered. As we arrived not long after theopening time of midday, there were nocrowds, and I took the opportunity to getclear photos of all the rides and decorations

without having to work around people orwait until someone moved or walked on. Atevery turn I found another skilfully*painted item in the traditional fairgroundstyle, with 3D lettering and brilliant colours.

* "my own" Full outlines, as "mine" alreadyuses the N Hook

* "skilfully" Insert last vowel, as "skilful"would also make sense here

Having walked all round several times, weretired to another part of the* park for oursandwiches, and when we returned, thecrowds had grown. The sun came out andthe smell of candy floss and hamburgersbegan to pervade the air, as the place filledup with families and children. Now myphotos were much more* interesting, asthe rides came alive, being full ofpassengers instead of just one or two*. AsI stood by the Octopus ride, I felt as if Ihad stepped into a time machine and wasback at Blackheath Fair in the 1970’s. Thebiggest difference today was that everyone

was taking pictures and movies with theirmobile phones, which didn’t exist then, andindeed some of the rides warned againstmobile phones falling out of pockets whilstthe rider was being flung around.

* Omission phrases "another part (of) the""much mo(re)" "one (or) two"

"part" is only written like this in phrases.The "of" is omitted, rather than use an FHook, as that would look too much like

"number of".

Steam Fairground

All the rides were familiar ones, includingthe Swing Boats and Dodgems, but theonly one that was new to me was theSteam Yachts, which are two giantgondolas that swing back and forth* toever greater heights. One has the UnionJack on its underside, and the other hasthe Stars and Stripes, which can only* beseen properly* when the boats are in fullheight swing. In the centre is the steamengine, with brass work all gleaming, andon the boards surrounding the ride arebeautifully* painted pictures of varioushistorical steam vessels at sea.

* Omission phrase "back (and) forth"

* "only" Use this form in phrases if it joinsconveniently

* "properly"Insert the first vowe, and thediphone in "appropriately", as they aresimilar in shape and meaning

* "beautifully" insert last vowel, as"beautiful" would also make sense here

The other fascinating feature is how youcan watch the ingenious workings of manyof the machines and see clearly how theyoperate. This to me is much more*interesting than the modern ones withcomputer controlled and synched music,strobe lighting effects and tacky plasticfigures speaking to passers-by. I am veryglad that someone has rescued the old

rides and renovated them as originals,without trying to update or change them. Itmust have been* quite a challenge to dothis and still conform to the present-daysafety rules, which are more stringent thanthey ever were in the past.

* Omission phrases "much mo(re)" "itmust (have) been"

Steam Fairground

I could not* help but compare this with thegiant Christmas fairground that we visitedlast December in Hyde Park*. That wasvery much larger and set up for anextended period over Christmas and NewYear*. It was full of flashing and chasingneon lights and dayglo* paintwork,continuing the tradition of loud colours andeven louder music, and many of thefamiliar rides were present in newer

"plumage", brighter and faster. Both ofthese fairs were enjoyable but for differentreasons. The Christmas one was verymuch* better at night, when everythingwas brightly lit. My main interest in Carter’sfair was because I had been on those typesof rides in the past, so it was "MemoryLane" time, as well as enjoying thedecoration and artistry.

* "I could not" When phrasing, "could" isgenerally written separately to avoidconfusion with "can", but in the negative itcan be joined, as "could not" is acompletely different outline from "cannot"

* See blog article for December 2014"Christmas Lights"

* "Hyde Park" R Hook used for "park, part"only in phrases

* "very much" Full form for "much" to jointhe phrase, and also helps differentiatefrom "very large"

* "year" Only thus in phrases

* "dayglo" was the brand name of a type offluorescent paint, so no letter W on the end

I think that by now you have probablycome to find that Pitman’s Shorthand* isan efficient way to write very quickly, aslong as you have done sufficient practice.Most shorthand systems are more efficientthan longhand. Their efficiency depends onwhat you intend to use them for. The moretraining you do, the more proficient you willbe. All these words come from the Latinword for "do, make, perform", as also seenin "fact" and "effect", and this is a big hintat how you can use your time moreefficiently to increase skill and speed.Writing the outlines is a much more*

efficient way to learn them than justreading. It is inefficient to look up newoutlines and then fail to practise them, asthey can so easily be forgotten a fewmoments later. If you use your timeinefficiently, your memory will be deficientin the information you need. This deficiencymust be made* up in order to* besuccessful.

It is gratifying to see these interesting andhistorical pieces of machinery* revived andused for their original purpose, which is thebest way* of preserving them, as it paysfor their maintenance and restoration offuture ones, and also encourages others totake an interest and do the same andmaybe take on similar projects. A scrapyard would be a sad place for these piecesof fun that really ought to be swirling and

whizzing around on a lovely sunny* day inthe park or village green. (952 words)

If you give your studies insufficient timeand therefore only have insufficientknowledge of the system, your proficiencywill be low and your goals may seem out ofreach. I am sure you are sufficientlymotivated to spend extra time practising, inall those spare minutes when you cannotdo other things straight away. The most

efficient method is to have a practice drillbook made up and ready to useimmediately. Every proficient writer hashad to do this in order to* get to theirpresent level of proficiency.
