Akademieweek: • Tumi Khukele• Kobus Lombard• Hennie Terreblanche• EP Nel• Denzil Fiff

Arende: • Timmy Robertson• Ruan van der Walt• Edik du Plooy• Stefano Ekkerd

• SJ Fourie

Arende XV: • Christiaan Geyer• Willem van Niekerk

Grant Khomo 0/16 :• Jayden Seekoei

Vrystaat 0/16 XV: • Hanno Rossouw• Gerhart Roodt• HJ Grobbelaar

JY HET NODIG:• ’n Raam waarvan jy hou.

sonneblomolie, gedreineer• 1 x 400g-blik heel geskilde tamaties• 4 koppies rys, gekook• ¾ koppie gerasperde beleë cheddar of

IS IT A COLD SNIFFLE OR A FLU SNIFFLE? AND WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT?

TELLING THE DIFFERENCEThe perennial confusion between the common cold and influenza is due to the fact that the symptoms are so similar: runny nose, sore throat, fever, and body aches. For the record, colds are caused by viruses, and there are often at least 200 of them circulating during cold and flu season. By contrast, there’s usually only one influenza virus in circulation every year, according to health experts.

The best indications that you’re dealing with a cold and not the flu are severity and duration: Colds typically last between three and seven days and generally aren’t very serious.

TREATING COLDS AND FLUDr. Yeong Kwok, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Michigan’s Department of Internal Medicine, says the best treatment for the common cold comes from your grandmother’s book of sound advice: get lots of rest, drink hot liquids, have some chicken soup, gargle with warm salt water, and take over-the-counter cold remedies. “Getting enough rest really does make sense, because we know that stress and a lot of physical activity can depress your immune system,” says Kwok. “So if you do have an infection, it makes sense that resting and drinking lots of fluids would help your system get better, and prevent it coming down with an additional problem.”

Kwok adds that some studies have shown that taking zinc lozenges can reduce the duration of cold symptoms from six to three days. While the

evidence isn’t strong, he says it can’t hurt to have a stash of zinc lozenges handy, just to give it a try.If you feel like you

have a whopper of a cold, however, and are

experiencing serious and longer-lasting symptoms than normal, you’re probably dealing with the flu. A case of the flu can last up to 12 days. And although antibiotics are useless against a cold, they can be effective in treating the flu virus, says Kwok.

But they’re only really effective if taken within 48 hours of the appearance of your first symptoms, and are usually prescribed for high-risk cases. That leaves the countless over-the-counter drugs to combat colds and flu.

But even the most potent varieties are likely to offer little more than temporary relief, says dr. Larry Fields, a GP. “The over-the-counter medications act to control symptoms so you may feel better, but the course of the illness won’t be shortened.”

IS THE FLU SERIOUS?If the treatment for colds and the flu is typically the same, why is it important to know whether you’ve got one or the other?

Because the flu has much greater potential to lead to pneumonia in certain high-risk people, says Kwok. Those people include the elderly, those with chronic conditions (such as diabetes, asthma and chronic bronchitis), and those with auto-immune deficiencies.

A COLD OR FLU? HERE’S WHAT TO DO

As the nights get colder, the duvets and heaters aren’t the only things being hauled out, as people across the country reach

for the tissues to soothe those inevitable winter sniffles.

Pneumonia should be suspected if flu symptoms suddenly worsen, if a fever suddenly spikes higher, or if someone experiences shortness of breath. A healthcare provider should be called immediately if such symptoms develop.

“It’s very rare for someone to die from a cold, but the flu and complications from the flu are estimated to cause about 20 000 deaths per year in the United States. So that’s why there’s more concern about the flu,” says Kwok.

PREVENTION THE BEST MEDICINEThe best way to protect against the flu and pneumonia is to get a flu shot. Although anyone can get one, the

American Centre for Disease Control and

Prevention (CDC) recommends

the vaccine to people over 50, those in high-risk groups, women who will

be at least three months pregnant

during flu season, and those with compromised immune systems.

“Anyone in a high-risk group, regardless of their age, should consider getting the vaccine. And anyone who simply doesn’t want to get the flu, should also think about the flu vaccine,” says Kwok.

To reduce your risk of contracting colds and the flu even further, there’s always good old hand-washing, says Fields. “Regularly washing your hands is highly important, whether you have a cold or are trying to avoid getting one,” according to Fields. “If you’re the infected person, you also need to make sure to cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze so that you’re not spreading it that way.”

6 BEAUTY

TWO-TONE TOP KNOTJLaw just knows how to make everything look fab, doesn’t she? Thanks to her, my behind-closed-doors look is now good enough for the red carpet. (Cue: big smile.) Get her look by raking your hair through your fingers and bringing everything together at the crown. Twist into a knot and secure with pins before spritzing with hairspray.

THE SELENAThis striking updo has me pining for a rainy day. Get the look by applying a hair mousse to wet hair. Blow dry completely, then curl using a curling cone. Split your hair into three sections: bottom (ear-to-ear), middle

(temple-to-temple) and crown (full top). Starting at the bottom, create a ponytail at the nape of the neck and then roll the entire ponytail upwards and pin horizontally, creating a tube effect. Next, roll the middle section horizontally and pin underneath the bottom roll. Lightly tease the top, then roll vertically and pin into the middle roll.

TURBAN À LA EVAWho knew covering up could look this good? Turn your most striking scarf into a turban by folding it in half lengthwise. Line up the centre of the fold with the base of your head. Pull the ends up towards the front of your head and cross them over each other at the forehead. Wrap them around the back again and tie the ends into a knot. Tuck the loose ends under the back knot, and you’re done. No one needs to know what’s happening underneath.

BOBBING BEAUTYMy oh my, miss Meester! If you’ve recently chopped your locks, go with this effortlessly amazing look of Leighton’s. Simply mix Serum and Mousse in your palms and smooth over freshly blow-dried hair.

FAUX-BOB WITH A VINTAGE TWISTThe asymmetrical bob is back, but you don’t have to chop your locks to pull it off. For Taylors’ faux-bob, us a 1’’ Curling Rod to create loose waves. Spritz your tresses with Leave-In Balm and brush through. At the nape of the

neck, tuck the longer strands in and secure with bobby pins.

BRAID ME BEAUTIFULFight the frizz with a fancy fishtail this winter. Make like Blake and spritz on some Leave-In Conditioning Spray and braid your hair normally from the crown of your head to the nape of your neck. Divide your hair into two equal parts and braid into a fishtail plait before securing with a clear elastic. This style is especially beautiful when worn with the season’s hottest hair colours.

SIX HOT HAIRDOS FOR COLD DAYSChilly weather getting you down? Hike up the temperature with these gorgeous rainy day dos and

we guarantee you won’t be untagging any party pictures of yourself this winter.

CBC ST JOSEPH’S(t) 051 436 6550 (e) [email protected]

MOTHER AND DAUGHTER TEA AT CBC ST JOSEPH’SMay is the month of every year that we pay tribute to the most awesome people in our lives, our mothers. Each person thinks that their mom holds the title of “best mom in the world.” This is entirely true because we each believe and know that our moms are the best. CBC ladies from Grade one to Matric celebrated their moms in style this year. Our annual Mother and Daughter Tea

function was stylish and with flair, just as the theme predicted “Bright and Beautiful Hats.” Our moms and daughters were stunningly beautiful in their glamorous outfits and hats. All the ladies, Moms and Daughters, looked as if they stepped out of fashion magazines. Our moms were treated to a real fashion show with clothes provided by popular

fashion outlets in Bloemfontein. Our CBC Models (Grade 1 to Grade 12) did justice to the beautiful clothes by modeling the outfits like professional models. The delicacies provided were dainty and delicious. Our moms spent a memorable morning with their daughters. It truly was a wonderful occasion where moms and their daughters celebrated their bond of love and belonging.
