(Grades 6-8).5.2 - Explain when health-related situations require a thoughtful decision-making process. TEACHER TALKING POINTS Define bullying & Cyber-bullying: Bullying is an intentional act that is repeated over time and involves a real or perceived imbalance of power. There are three “pieces” to this definition: Intentional act, repeated over time, and real or perceived imbalance of power. Examples of bullying are physical bullying (harming someone’s physical body), verbal bullying (using words to harm someone) and emotional bullying (excluding someone from a group, spreading rumors). Cyber-bullying is defined as bullying that takes place using electronic technology. Electronic technology includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets along with communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites. Cyber-bullying is a type of emotional bullying that can use both words and pictures. Examples of cyberbullying include mean text messages or emails; rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites; and embarrassing pictures, videos, websites or fake profiles. Why is Cyber-bullying so serious? Unlike physical, verbal and emotional bullying, kids who are cyberbullied have a harder time getting away from the behavior. Why is that? Cyberbullying can happen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and reach a kid even when he or she is alone. It can happen any time of the day or night. It can be never-ending. Cyberbullying messages and images can be posted anonymously and distributed very quickly to a wide audience. It can be difficult and sometimes impossible to trace the source. Deleting inappropriate or harassing messages, texts and pictures is extremely difficult after they have been posted or sent. BLINDSIDE BULLYING! miDDle SCHOOl leSSON
