MESSAGE FROM FR . DAVID

Blindness and Sight in Christ – Part 1 Theologians speak of the will of God in three different kinds or categories. First there is the creative will of God. The creative will of God

refers to God’s design or intention for His creation. In His creative will, God intended for the universe, the world, nature and humanity to live in perfect peace, harmony and joyfulness. God intended for humanity to know Him directly and to enjoy fellowship with Him always. As we all know, what God intended is not how things went. In the Fall of Adam and Eve, humanity lost its fellowship and its vision of God. In a sense we all were blinded to the truth and the reality of God. This accounts for atheism and a distorted view of God that have persisted in the world ever since.

Humanity left God a fallen world to work with. The fall of humanity somehow infected the entire universe. The peace and harmony that God intended were encroached upon by strife and anguish. The world became a dangerous place. Although none of those things is what God intended, He nevertheless permits evils to exist. Theologians refer to this as the permissive will of God. It is by no means God’s design, desire or intention that evil exist in creation, but He permits it. God endows human beings with free will knowing that they have the option of abusing it and knowing that they inevitably will abuse it, and he permits this to be so. God also permits many other evils and sorrows and pains to exist in this world. In nearly every case, He doesn’t say why.

Thirdly, there is the redemptive will of God. Although for reasons which are incomprehensible to us God permits evil and pain, He also wills the salvation of all people. God has no intention of sending anyone to Hell. He has no desire to condemn eternally any soul that He has created. In spite of the fact that humanity spoiled His creative will, God’s intention and desire is to restore us to Himself. Anyone who rebels against God to the bitter end and is finally lost, is so against the will of God. God would rather have had that person repent and be saved.

The three-tiered will of God is evident in the story of the blind man given his sight in John’s Gospel. We’re told that the man was blind from his birth. To the Jews of the time, it was commonly believed that affliction of any kind was the result of sin in the person’s life. Injury, illness, deformity and even death were seen as the direct result of some grievous sin the person had committed or practiced.

That idea has some kind of appeal or attraction that has lasted even to recent times. Even today, there are still some people, who, when injured or seriously ill ask, “what did I ever do to deserve this?” In Jesus’ time, it was assumed that affliction naturally befell sinners. If you sinned, you could expect to be injured, killed or be struck with blindness, deafness or some other illness. So the disciples were perplexed over one thing. Since the man was blind from birth, did that mean it was possible to sin in the womb, or did it mean that the man’s blindness was due to the sin of his parents? That was another common idea among the Jews in biblical times. Children inheriting the consequences of their parents’ sins is mentioned in the Old Testament. One example is in the Book of Exodus where God says, “I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation.” To be continued . .

POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER INTENTION FOR MARCH

Intention for Evangelization:- Sacrament of Reconciliation

“Let us pray that we may experience the Sacrament of Reconciliation with renewed depth, to taste the infinite mercy of God.”

O Glorious Saint JosephSaint JosephSaint JosephSaint Joseph, you were chosen by God to be the foster father of Jesus, the most pure spouse of Mary, ever Virgin, and the head of the Holy Family. You have been chosen by Christ's Vicar as the heavenly Patron and Protector of the Church founded by Christ. Protect the Sovereign Pontiff and all bishops and priests united with him. Be the protector of all who labour for souls amid the trials and tribulations of this life; and grant that all peoples of the world may be docile to the Church without which there is no salvation. Dear Saint Joseph, accept the offering I make to you. Be my father, protector, and guide in the way of salvation. Obtain for me purity of heart and a love for the spiritual life. After your example, let all my actions be directed to the greater glory of God, in union with the Divine Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and your own paternal heart. Finally, pray for me that I may share in the peace and joy of your holy death. Amen

Society of St Vincent de Paul Notre Dame Kerrville

On March 14, 2020, our business at SVDP changed. This last year has shown us active and safe in the time of CO-VID. We did not stop distributing food or financial assistance. The store closed to the public for longer than we hoped.

In this year, we distributed 403,000 lbs of food to about 1500 families; the average family came to us three times during the year. The food we received from the San Antonio Food Bank cost us $43,000; this was mostly covered by community grants such as Community Foundation. For government accounting proposes, donated and food bank food is assessed a value of $1.74 per pound, therefore, we gave out $700,823 worth of food. In financial assistance, we were able to help with utility bills, heaters and winter coats in the amount of $150,032; we received donations of cash and goods in order to reach this figure. Checks donated to us for food or food pantry were not used for financial assistance, but for food.

We also have been fortunate to administer KPUB’s Change for Charity program. A certain amount is permitted per month and that is always used! Of KPUB’s 17,000 residential customers, all but 650 are participating in this program. We started July 1, 2021 and through February 28, 2021 we authorized payments in the amount of $112,948 towards KPUB bills. This was the only way we could still offer financial aid; this program will not last forever.

This year of CO-VID, God’s hand inspired donors and volunteers to aid His family with close to a million dollars in assistance. The store is making enough to cover the expenses for our campus.

Through March, our neighbors in need may come twice a month for food. We have a quarterly limit of financial assistance of $125.00.; the new quarter begins April 1.
