Archeparchy of Philadelphia helps the community and less fortunate with Parish Social Service Projects!

Parishes in the Archeparchy of Philadelphia overwhelmingly responded to Bishop Andriy Rabiy’s appeal for parishes to chose social service projects that would benefit less fortunate in their own parish and local community as we prepared to celebrate the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ!

Thank you to all the parishioners and volunteers throughout the Archeparchy of Philadelphia who generously responded during St. Philips Fast, a time of deeper prayer, stricter fasting and generous almsgiving. Prayer renews our faith in Lord, fasting strengthens our will and self-control, and almsgiving turns our attention to our neighbor especially those who are in need, lonely and alone.

The next few pages of “The Way” are devoted to the Parish Social Projects in the Archeparchy.

Your efforts and generosity to spread Christmas Cheer is graciously appreciated!

May God Bless You!

Christ is Born! Glorify Him!

St. Josaphat, Bethlehem, PAWreaths Across America

St. Josaphat Church in Bethlehem Pennsylvania together with the Ukrainian American Veterans (Jack Palance Post) joined the “Wreaths Across America” program. Started in 1992 the program honors our veterans by placing Christmas wreaths at veterans graves. It has become an international program and one of the Christmas Fast projects for St. Josaphat Church.

Wreaths were first blessed by Fr. Daniel and then assembled by those participating. The assembled wreaths were taken to the parish cemetery where a Christmas wreath was placed at the grave of each veteran buried in the cemetery. Those who were unable to attend made donations as

their participation in the program. The wreaths will remain at the grave of each veteran throughout the Christmas/Theophany Season.

Parish Christmas Social Projects

BY FRANK WILKES LESNEFSKYDECEMBER 17, 2018SCRANTON, PA. TIMES TRIBUNE

SCRANTON — Their needs range from winter boots, coats and pajamas to vitamins and over-the-counter medications.

Although the orphaned children are about 4,500 miles away in Ukraine, envelopes scrawled with their names, ages and needs are a call to arms for parishioners of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on North Seventh Avenue in the city.

For the past four years, the church has sent thousands of pounds of clothing, candy, vitamins and medicine to two orphanages in Kolomyia and Fastiv in

Scranton, PA. Ukrainian Catholic Church helps orphans 4,500 miles away

Ukraine. The Rev. Myron Myronyuk works closely with directors of the orphanages, receiving frequent updates on the children and lists of what they need.

He writes information about each child on an envelope, placing them at the front of the church for parishioners to donate what they can.“It’s God’s call,” Myronyuk said. “God calls us and reminds us that we have to share. We have to share our blessing wherever we can.”

There are about 26 children between the two orphanages, ranging from around 4 to 14 years old, Myronyuk said. His church sends between 15 and 20 packages every year, with each package weighing about 50 to 60

pounds.

“Thank God they’re not hungry ... but they need so many things,” he said.Myronyuk, 47, was ordained in Ukraine and spent much of his life there, moving to the United States only 11 years ago. While he worked to become a priest, he spent time working in orphanages.“I saw that struggle,” he said, explaining that he also grew up in a poor family. “I understand that it’s not easy. ... That’s why we’re trying all the time to help them.”

His parishioners donate everything from winter coats, gloves, hats, socks and boots to pajamas and slippers for frigid Ukrainian winters and cold nights at the orphanage, he said. The

orphanages are heated to only about 60 or 65 degrees, so pajamas and slippers are vital at night.

Paul Ewasko, one of the church’s parishioners and donors, has attended St. Vladimir for the past 83 years. His wife emigrated from Ukraine when she was a child, he said, so sponsoring the orphanages “means something very special” to them.

“When the packages arrive, the excitement is deafening,” Ewasko said, emphasizing the importance of the children seeing they have people who care about them.Whenever the orphanages receive the church’s care packages, they send Myronyuk photos of the children wearing their new clothing.

Parish Christmas Social ProjectsSPIRITUAL REVIVAL, RENEWAL A-HAPPENING

(MCADOO AND HAZLETOWN PARISHES)

Our goal is to be a Light unto others – give witness to our belief in Christ and His Gospel message. The very first step was to resume a Catechetical program in both parishes: St. Mary’s (Patronage) in McAdoo, PA and St. Michael’s in Hazletown, PA. Thus far, there are two children enrolled at St. Mary’s and seven at St. Michael’s. Some are being prepared for First Penance at both parishes.

There is also adult religious education at both parishes: seven at St. Mary’s and three at St. Michael’s. The theme is Bible and Liturgy Appreciation.

Both parishes helped others to culturally celebrate Ukrainian Christmas through Ukrainian cuisine. The McAdoo parish made dozen of pyrohy and the Hazleton parish baked some 1,000 nut, poopyseed and apricot rolls. These were not just fundraisers, but an opportunity for those of Eastern European ancestry to preserve some of their traditions.

The Hazleton parish had provided hundreds of these Christmas rolls to be distributed by other Ukrainian Catholic parishes within our Archeparchy.

The making of pyrohy at St. Mary’s in McAdoo is not only a good fundraiser, but an opportunity for our parishioners to socialize with one another. And an ecumenical dimension could be also be noted: Women of other faith communities join (Latin-rite and Eastern Orthodox) with ours building upon the ecumenical approach of some previous pastors.

Both parishes (St. Mary’s and St. Michael’s) are collecting non-perishable food, paper products, soaps, etc. to distribute to the less fortunate members of the McAdoo-Hazleton communities. Let us bring Christ and a compassionate, caring heart to those in need.

This year under the initiative of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, the Christmas schedule of all Byzantine churches in the McAdoo-Hazleton area will be printed so as to encourage Eastern Catholic Churches to attend Christmas services

and to invite others to come join us in the joyful celebration of Christmas.

This is another way to welcome back inactive parishioners, especially those baptized in a given church and still living in the area. During the St. Nicholas program at St. Mary’s in McAdoo, children and grandchildren of our parishioners were seen once again in attendance and enjoying a time of joyful celebration and fellowship. It is own hope and goal to encourage and invite and welcome them to future parish programs and socials.

St. John the Baptist Parish in Whippany, NJ

This year we had already three social projects in our community: collecting school back bags filled with warm clothes for Ukraine, collection of items for orphans in Ukraine, collection of basic items for children abandoned by their parents. Planning on social service during the 40-day of St. Philip’s Fast, we decided in bringing our newly organized parish youth group to a facility in the community as both a learning experience and a way to give back. We have been in touch with the "Cheshire Home" in Florham Park. They provide a demonstration class that teaches kids what it is like to be physically disabled and will allow us to perform community service. The Cheshire Home is a rehabilitation center for people or all ages who are in wheel chairs due to accidents or medical conditions.

Bishop Andriy Rabiy Attends 15th Annual Candlelight Christmas Pageant at St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church

in Frackville, Pa.

John UsalisPottsville, Pa. RepublicanMonday, December 17, 2018

FRACKVILLE, PA — The 15th annual Candlelight Christmas Pageant was performed Sunday at St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church, telling everyone the story of the Nativity of Jesus Christ more than 2,000 years ago.

As in the past, the church was full for the performance, with the special guest being

the Most Rev. Andriy Rabiy, bishop and apostolic administrator of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. Also in attendance was the Very Rev. Archpriest John M. Fields, the archeparchy director of communications, former pastor and Frackville native; and the Very Rev. Archpriest Michael Hutsko, the dean of the South Anthracite Protopresbytery of the archeparchy.

After the welcome from

the Rev. Petro Zvarych, the program filled with scripture and music began. Parish children filled the roles of those in the Christmas story that included angels, shepherds and the Wise Men or Magi. Since it was the 15th pageant, the church invited participants of past pageants to participate.

There were five narrators this year: Sarah Halupa, John Meridionale, Chase Fanelli, Hunter Shimko and Nick Ludwig. They told the Christmas story

using Bible passages, each speaking about a portion of the story as the children portrayed the scene. The program was directed by parishioners Donna Spotts and Tanya Meridionale.

The children played the main parts, telling the story from when Mary received the announcement from the Archangel Gabriel that she would bring into the world the Messiah, who would be named Jesus,

to the visit by the three Magi or “Wise Men” bringing their gold, frankincense and myrrh as gifts to the newborn king.

To the music of “O Come All Ye Faithful” played by the North Schuylkill Brass Ensemble, the children dressed in costume walked down the center aisle and took their places in front of the iconostasis (icon wall). The first scene was Mary (Abigail Kuzio) being visited by the Archangel Gabriel (Sara Boxer), who said, “The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women. Do not fear, for you have found

favor with God. Behold, you shall conceive and bring forth a son, and you shall call him Jesus.”

Mary sat near the manger with her spouse, Joseph (Nicholas Meridionale) as Gabriel stood near them as “O Little Town of Bethlehem” was sung. Between each narration, Christmas carols were sung by the cast and the audience, making the program an interactive one.

As Mary and Joseph sat at the manger with Baby Jesus in it, angels and shepherds and the Magi, portrayed by Jacob Lynn, Brendan Fetterolf

and Evan Damiter, came to visit. The Magi walked down the center aisle to the Holy Family led by the star held by Hannah Shimko.

As what usually happens, one of the youngest shepherds or angels depart from the script and the scene, and take off in an unpredictable direction, quickly chased by a parent to the amusement of the audience.

After the children sang “Do You Hear What I Hear?”, Halupa said, “He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman.

He grew up in still another obscure village, where he worked in a carpenter shop until he was 30. Then for three years he was an itinerant preacher. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family or owned a house. He didn’t go to college. He never visited a big city. He never traveled two hundred miles from the place he was born. He did none of the things one usually associates with greatness. He had no credentials but himself. He was only 33 when the tide of public opinion turned against him. He friends ran away. He was turned over to his enemies and went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While he was dying, his executioners gambled for his clothing, the only property he had on earth. When he was dead, he was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend. The carols “Silent Night” and “Joy to the World” were sung, and everyone stood during the singing of “Boh Predvichny (Eternal God)” and had their candles lighted. The program finished with

the singing of “Let There Be Peace on Earth.”

With the last song, Zvarych invited Rabiy to speak to everyone.

“I think all of us here have been treated to something wonderful, to see the Christmas story come alive again,” Rabiy said. “And how about those wonderful children who performed so well today.”

Rabiy hopes that the 15 years the pageant

has been performed will continue on well into the future.

“It is wonderful that we keep this tradition alive. I hope and pray that it will continue to 25 years and 30 years and even 50 years,” he said. “I want to thank each one of you for coming this evening to support the show and keep our faith in Christmas alive.”

At the end of the pageant, people moved to the parish hall for a

covered dish social. At the end of the meal, St. Nicholas arrived and took his place at the front of the room, where he visited with the children and distributed gifts.

Rabiy spent most of his day in the area, celebrating the Divine Liturgy at 8:30 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Maizeville and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s.

SSMI’s New Beginnings! Sloatsburg, NY has been the home of the Sisters Servants in the Immaculate Conception Province in the USA since 1941, and we hope it will continue to be for many years to come. We

know that there are various “rumors” out there, and we want to be honest and share with you our future plans, and the reasons that have prompted these decisions. In 2006 we began a process of “strategic planning” with regards to our property and buildings, realistically facing the decrease in vocations to religious life, an increase in the median age of our Sisters, and a weakened economy which affected our ability to continue maintaining all of the buildings on the property. In 2010, we sold 52 acres in the front of the property, something we needed to do to avoid bankruptcy. In 2013, we sent out an appeal letter sharing with you our situation, asking the tough question, “Will there always be a St. Mary’s Villa to come home to?” We asked for your financial support and prayers for vocations. Unfortunately, the appeal gave only $4,750.00 and no vocations, but we continued to move forward, striving to serve the needs of others. We shared with you our dreams to expand St. Joseph’s Adult Care Home, but have not been able to see that dream come true, as of yet. We have been assisted by financial advisors and professionals in determining the best way to provide for the care of our elderly Sisters as well as continue our ministries into the future. Thus, it is with heavy hearts that we will be selling St. Mary’s Villa and some property surrounding the Villa. .We are not selling all of our property in Sloatsburg. We will still host the annual Holy Dormition Pilgrimage, which will be August 10-11, 2019. Dear friends, we know that you may be experiencing “heavy hearts,” as St. Mary’s has been home to some of you as alumnae of the Academy, retreatants, or felt it was like home whenever you visited. Please know that the Sisters Servants will continue to extend open arms in welcoming you to Sloatsburg, as we minister to our people. We ask for your support and prayers as we grieve this “loss” together, but know that we will heal and experience “new beginnings!.”

Today, let’s take a closer look at how this book is organized and see if we can learn something about the feast we just celebrated, The Feast of Theophany. Like most reference books, this catechism has a table of contents and a subject index. Look at the table of contents in the very beginning of the book. You will notice that in the Faith of the Church section, there is a section on Theophany on page 72. Next, look at the subject index. Make sure you are looking at the subject index, the very last index in the book and not one of the other indi-ces. If you look up Theophany, you will see many places in the catechism where the Theophany is mentioned. These will be paragraph numbers not page numbers.

1.The Faith of the Church, 2.The Prayer of the Church, and 3.The Life of the Church.

In our last issue, we learned about the three main sections of The Catechism of the Ukrainian Catholic Church: Christ—Our Pascha. Do you remember them? They are:

The Table of Contents—gives us page numbers The Subject Index—gives us paragraph numbers

Let’s read sections 197—202 beginning on page 72. Here are just some of the wonderful things you will learn. We learn that the word Theophany comes from the Greek words for “divine appearance.”

What appeared? The Holy Trinity appeared and was made known to us, The voice of God the Father proclaimed Jesus His beloved Son and the Holy Spirit appeared in the form of a dove. We learn that at first, St. John did not want to baptize Jesus. He knew he was unworthy to bap-tize Him. St. John said, “I need to be baptized by you.” Our Lord told St. John that it was im-portant in order to “fulfill all righteousness.” As a man, Jesus came to be baptized, but as God, the Jordan feared him and turned back. We learn that when Ukrainians think of the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, it makes them think of the baptism of Rus-Ukraine hundreds of years ago by the Grand Price Volodomyr in the river Dnipro. The Dnipro is sometimes called the Ukrainian Jordan.

Today’s coloring page is a picture of the Theophany icon. We see Our Lord being baptized in the Jordan River by St. John the Baptist, sometimes called St. John the Forerunner.

and other

Interesting Things in the Icon

Theophany means “Divine Appearance” In icons of the Theophany we see the appearance of the Holy Trinity. It is easy to find God the Son. He is Jesus who is being baptized. We do not see God the Father, but we see a half circle showing heaven opening up. This represents the voice of God the Father talking about His Son and saying, “This is my beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:13-17) We also see the Holy Spirit Who appeared as a Dove.

The Holy Trinity

These remind us of the words of St. John, “Every tree which does not bring forth good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.” Matt 3:10. We do this by our prayers and good works. An example of this was the Charity Project each parish did during the Nativity Fast.

The Tree and the Axe

Angles are waiting to help Jesus when he comes out of the river. They are holding towels and clothes. Notice how they have their heads bowed. Also notice that their hands are covered with the cloth they are holding. These are signs of love and respect.

The Angels

In Theophany icons, we see St. John bowing to Jesus. He is also shown with messy hair and a scruffy beard since he lived in the desert. He is looking up to heaven where he hears the voice of God the Father and sees the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. In some icons we see St. John pointing to Jesus. St. John told his followers that they must now follow Jesus, not him.

St. John the Baptist

Check out Our Lord’s right hand blessing the water. Our Lord is being baptized but he is not being made holy by the water. Instead, He is blessing the water and making the water holy.

Our Lord

Often, we see weird little creatures in The-ophany icons. Sometimes they are sea mon-sters, funny little people riding fish, a man with wings and a jug, or a woman with a crown. Some represent the Jordan River and some repre-sents the sea. They are there to remind us of the Old Testament Psalms. These were written hundreds of years before the birth of Our Lord. They talk about how Christ will overcome evil and about how the seas and rivers are aston-ished by what is happening and turn back in fear.

Try to find these quotes in the Bible. There is something very special about reading from the actual Bible.

“You did establish the sea by Thy might, You did crush the heads of the dragons in the wa-ter.” (Psalm 73:14)

“The waters saw Thee and were afraid; the abysses were troubled. (Psalm 76:15

“The sea beheld and fled, the Jordan turned back.” (Psalm 113:3)

A Scalloped Shell Baptismal Ornament Craft

Now that we know something about the baptism of Our Lord, let’s think about our own baptism. Ask your mom and dad to tell you something about the day you received the sacrament of baptism. They may have pictures to show you. With your parents permission, you can make this cool ornament. You can pack it away with your Christmas things and bring it out

each year to hang on the Christmas tree. This will help you re-member the day when you were brought into the fullness of membership in the Church and were freed from the sin brought to us by our first parents, Adam and Eve.

How to make your ornament Scallop shell —you can buy these from a craft store or the fish section of a pet store. Ask your parents to drill a hole in the top of the shell. Craft Paint—Paint the outside of the shell. Sharpie Marker— Gold marker (optional) —Paint the edge of the shell. Craft pearl beads (optional)—Decorate with optional beads. Clear Nail polish or varnish—After if dries, coat the whole shell and let it dry. Ribbon—Put a piece of ribbon through the whole in the top for hanging—enjoy! A Treasury of Christian Teaching from the Three Hierarchs

St. Basil the Great teaches us that Holy Tradition is that which “the Lord Himself taught us, what the apostles preached, what the Fathers held fast, and what the martyrs confirmed.” (Against Sabellians, Arius, and Anomeans, Homily, 24,6; Catechism #31)

St. Basil also writes reminding us that “The Holy Spirit is the Source and Giver of every human life.” (On the Holy Spirit, 19,49; Catechism #256)

He explains that the reason we are saved through Baptism is “because we are regenerated through the grace given to us in Baptism.” (On the Holy Spirit, 10,26; Catechism #414)

Furthermore, St. Basil teaches that Faith and Baptism are two kindred and inseparable ways of salvation: “Faith is perfected through Baptism and Baptism is grounded on Faith.” (On the Holy Spirit, 12,28; Catechism #417)

St. John Chrysostom tells us how the Church was formed, came into being: “It is from both of these

(blood and water) that the Church is sprung… It is from His side; therefore, that Christ formed His Church, just as He formed Eve from the Side of Adam.” (Baptismal Instructions, 3,17; Catechism #350)

Christ showed to Peter and to us just how much He loved the Church “so that we should show great care for Her (the Church). (On the Priesthood, 2,1; Catechism #489)

The Golden-Mouth reminds us Christians that God has given us all a monitor to discern good from evil. “God put within our minds a judge so ever-watchful and vigilant, I mean a conscience.” (Discources on Lazarus, 4,4; Catechism #751)

St. Gregory the Theologian explains God’s command not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil: “God gave him a Law as material for his free will to act upon. This law was a commandment as to what plants he may partake of, and which one he might not touch. This latter was the tree of knowledge; not, however, because it was

evil from the beginning when He planted; nor was it forbidden because God grudged it to mankind… But it would have been good if partaken of at the proper time; for the tree was, according to my Contemplation (thought), which it is only safe for those who have reached maturity of habit to enter upon; but which is not good for those who are still somewhat simple and greedy.” (Oration 45: On Holy Pascha,8; Catechism #135)

Christ delivered us from sin through His Cross and Resurrection. St. Gregory writes that Jesus Christ revealed new life. Christ grants us new life in and through the Holy Spirit: “the Holy Spirit is Life and Life-Giver; Light and Light-Giver; Absolute Good and Spring (Source) of Goodness.” Oration 41, On Holy Pentecost, 9;Catechism #268)

MARCH FOR LIFE SCHEDULE:

Being pro-life is not in opposition to science. It’s quite the opposite in fact! Medical and technological advancements continue to reaffirm the science behind the pro-life cause – that life begins at fertilization, or day one, when egg meets sperm and a new, unique, human embryo is created. From the moment of fertilization, our DNA is present, whether its 23 pairs of chromosomes or 22.

March for Life Conference

The March for Life Conference is designed to provide marchers with in-depth education on the yearly theme. The speakers and training sessions will provide information and training tools for marchers to go back to their communities equipped to make a difference for life.

Thursday, January 17, 2019 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

RENAISSANCE WASHINGTON DC DOWNTOWN HOTEL 999 NINTH STREET NW

The unique fingerprint that each of us has – distinguishing us from any other human on the planet, is determined by that DNA at day one! Right from the beginning of life, you are becoming the unique, incredible, unrepeatable person that you are! When life begins and the stages of prenatal development are scientific facts. Humanity – and our uniqueness as individuals – begins at day one, at fertilization. Life, in its most vulnerable form, should be protected. That, in essence, is why we march. We march to end abortion, with the vision of a world where the beauty, dignity, and uniqueness of every human life are valued and protected. (https://marchforlife.org/mfl-2019/2019-mfl-theme/)

POPE FRANCIS URBI ET ORBI: MAY THE NEWBORN LORD BRING RELIEF TO THE BELOVED LAND OF UKRAINE, YEARNING

TO REGAIN A LASTING PEACE

25 December 2018

Pope Francis’ revealed his “wish for a happy Christmas” as a “wish for fraternity” during his Christmas Urbi et Orbi message. The head of the Catholic spoke about Ukraine. "May the Newborn Lord bring relief to the beloved land of Ukraine, yearning to regain a lasting peace that is slow to come. Only with a peace respectful of the rights of every nation can the country recover from the sufferings it has endured and restore dignified living conditions for its citizens. I am close to the Christian communities of the region, and I pray that they may develop relationships of fraternity and friendship", - Pope Francis said in his Urbi et Orbi address on Christmas Day.

“Christmas is a family event when we feel that our Heavenly Father is joyful with us!” His Beatitude Sviatoslav

Sunday, 23 December 2018

Peace, love and light - these very important values can be the best gift from the Son of God during the Christmas and New Year holidays for each of us.

This was emphasized by His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Head and Father of the UGCC, in his greetings on the Nativity of Christ for all believers celebrating this holiday on December 25th, that is, according to the Gregorian calendar. It is worth noting that the Primate for the first time prepared such a greeting in English.

“We are approaching the Nativity of our Savior Jesus Christ, that is, the Mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God, God’s love, which will become the flesh of human history and one of us. So, on this occasion, let me express the best wishes to each of you,” said the spiritual leader of the Greek Catholics.

“Christmas is a special family event, when in our families, in our homes, we feel that our Heavenly Father is joyful with us. In His presence, the Savior can bring us God’s peace, love and light! Merry Christmas to each of you and Happy New Year!” with these words His Beatitude Sviatoslav greeted all the believers with New Year’s and Christmas holidays.

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:5)

Christ is born! Glorify Him!

Beloved in Christ!

Today heaven and earth is filled with the light of joy and peace. Angels and men, all creation welcomes Christ the Saviour born in human flesh. All of us together with the shepherds and wise men hasten to the poor stable-cave to join Mary and Joseph in venerating the incarnate God, who rests on hay in a manger. We hasten to receive the love and peace that the Lord brings into a world of hate and violence.

The Gospel narrative of the Nativity conveys to us the Good News proclaimed by the angel: “And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:12). In the Christmas carols and services of this mystical night we hear of a mighty heavenly

host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:14). All of humanity, in awaiting the birth of the Saviour, had hoped for the beginning of a new era in human history—a new time when the Messiah as Prince of Peace would restore harmony to human relations, would abolish all forms of violence of men against men; not as a victor in war, like his ancestor David, but as the Son of God, conquering the very reason for wars and hostility—human sin, that evil which is the greatest disfigurement of paradisiacal happiness.Human beings are created by God for peace which is a sign of the presence and action of the Holy Spirit (see Galatians 5:22-23). In spite of our nature, fallen through sin, human beings invariably seek this peace, even though we may not always know

how to achieve it. For this very reason our Divine Liturgy, after calling for the establishment and strengthening of the blessed Kingdom of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, immediately invites us to pray for peace from on high for the entire world and the well-being of God’s holy churches. Indeed, today’s feast proclaims to us that Christ is the Prince of Peace and that the might of God is revealed in peace.

When we hear the word “prince,” we immediately think of a person who has authority and power. We encounter many “princes,” good and bad, in various spheres of human life: politics, employment, family, and even church life. However, from the Gospel perspective and in light of the example of Christ as Prince of Peace, it becomes evident that divine authority is expressed through

service, and divine power is found in the infinite and unconditional, faithful, and sacrificial love of the Lord for His creation.

A human being can live in peace and become a servant of peace only when he or she receives the Prince of Peace, newly-born today, into their hearts, into their internal spiritual world, into their personal and social life. Saint Paul writes in his epistle to the Ephesians: “He is our peace” (Ephesians 2:14). Therefore, the greatest expression of God’s universal might, the manner in which the Prince of Peace manifests His power and authority, is not in the humiliation of others through injustice and violence, but in serving others out of unconditional love for the sake of peace!

At times in our daily lives it may seem to us that the one who is powerful

is the one who is able to humiliate another. However, in reality such an expression of power is violence. Therefore, standing before the manger of the Prince of Peace, we begin to understand that violence is always the argument of a weakling, of one who wishes to appear powerful. It is the behaviour of a coward, who simply fears the other, no matter how weak.

Christ endured violence from the very moment of His birth. King Herod, whom history calls great, in reality was a little coward: he feared for his authority, he perceived himself a failure in the face of God as a powerless Child. In order the retain authority and the riches entailed in it, he resorted to violence: commanding the death of the little ones of Bethlehem, the children of his own people! The peace of God, on the other hand, is always mightier than human violence, and that is why He is always victorious.Only the powerless and weak in spirit adopt a strategy of insidious attack, aggression, or blind violence as a method of ensuring

one’s authority, being incapable of convincing or leading others any other way. In contrast, human frailty, vested in Divine power, often becomes the pledge of true victory and a lasting peace. Let us recall what the Lord revealed to the Apostle of the nations: “My power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). The weakness of God is mightier that the appearance of human power. Herod was buried not long after the birth of our Lord Jesus, while Christ, the Prince of Peace, is alive—yesterday, today and forever! (see Hebrews 13:8).

Beloved in Christ! To celebrate Christmas is to be filled with peace from heaven and to say “no” to violence. Let us receive the newly-born Saviour as Prince of Peace in our families and become, following the example of St. Joseph and Mary the Theotokos, bearers and custodians of peace. Let us avoid all forms of violence—in word and deed—especially in our family circle, in relations between husband and wife or parents and children. Let us reject the culture of death which

allows for the killing of the innocent unborn and, as we see in some countries of the world, encourages the gravely ill or elderly to shorten their life under the guise of a so-called “sweet death,” which is nothing more than an offense against God and a crime against the sanctity and inviolability of human life.

Let our ancient Christmas carols resound in our schools and educational institutions, safeguarding our children from events of violence. In societies where we live, let us not permit the presence of blind physical or moral violence on the political battleground. Representatives of political forces who encourage violence and foment conflicts are in reality spiritual weaklings, and they will never be capable of serving the common good of our

people. Wherever we live, whether in Ukraine, which in the near future will be electing a president and parliament, or in the countries where our people have settled, let us support those who aspire elected office not in order to rule others, but in order to serve. Let us support those who resist violence and seek to establish the peace of God, a peace that is just and lasting.

Let us celebrate Christ’s Nativity today and bring forth the joy and peace that comes from heaven. Let us conquer violence and fear, both in our personal lives, and on all the fronts of this war, whose consequences profoundly affect each and every one of us. Let us counter foreign aggression, as do

those who defend our native land in Ukraine’s East, with the sacrifice of our love, in active solidarity with the victims of aggression. Let us be persistent in prayer, calling for the peace of God upon our land, in our families and hearts! May the words of the prophet Isaiah be fulfilled for us: “Violence shall no more be heard in your land, devastation or destruction within your borders; you shall call your walls Salvation, and your gates Praise” (Isaiah 60:18).

Beloved Brothers and Sisters! With this Christmas letter I greet all of you who today, as domestic Church, receive the new-born Christ into

your families—parents and children, the elderly and youth. I hasten to share the good news of joy and peace with those, who labour abroad—far away from their home and loved-ones. I embrace those brothers and sisters who have been forced to migrate, who miss their native lands, and all, who today carry on their bodies and in their hearts the wounds of war and violence.

With the Nativity of Christ, I especially greet our soldiers, the defenders of peace and victors of war. My thoughts and prayers go to the cold prisons, where our prisoners of war and of conscience continue to

The Lord of peace is with us! May the Christmas star shine upon us with its light, and in every home the words of our carol-song resound clearly:

Ангели співають: (The Angels sing:)

«Слава» восклицають, (Exclaiming “Glory!”)

На небесах і на землі (In heaven and on earth)Мир проповідають. (Proclaiming peace.)

I wish all of you the

authentic joy that is given to the children of God, a cheerful celebration of Christ’s Nativity, and a happy, peaceful and blessed New Year!

Christ is born! Glorify Him!

Pope at Te Deum: ‘Jesus unleashes the power of love’

31 December 2018

Pope Francis closes the calendar year with Evening Prayer and the Te Deum, saying in the fullness of time God sent His Son who unleashed the unheard-of power of love.

By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

Pope Francis closed

the calendar year with Evening Prayer, adoration and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, and the singing of the Te Deum in St Peter’s Basilica on Monday evening. Reflecting on the short reading from Evening Prayer for the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, Pope Francis focused on the phrases “fullness of time” and “to redeem”.

Fullness of timePope Francis began saying the Apostle Paul wrote that in the “fullness of time” God sent His Son not only born of a woman but born under the Mosaic Law. “How can this be the sign of the ‘fullness of time’?” Pope Francis asked. Though He began invisibly and insignificantly it would only be thirty years before Jesus would

“unleash an unheard-of power, which still endures and will endure for all of history. This power is called Love. It is love that gives fullness to everything, even to time”, the Pope said. In Jesus, God concentrated all of His love.

Born to redeemJesus was born to

accomplish the mission given to Him by His Father: to redeem. To “redeem”, Pope Francis explained, “is to liberate from a condition of slavery and restore the freedom, dignity and that liberty proper to children ”. It is from the “ancient slavery to sin” that the human heart is liberated and our dignity restored, he said.

Modern slaveryPope Francis then stopped to reflect on the condition of homelessness faced by

at least ten thousand people in Rome. He called their condition a form of slavery “unworthy of the human person”. Jesus too “was born in a similar condition, not by chance or by accident”, the Pope said, “but to demonstrate God’s love for the lowly and the poor”.

Church’s maternityPope Francis said he wants to encourage a model of maternity for the Feast of Mary’s Divine Maternity. It is a model of a Church that draws

near people within their lived reality, rather than simply looking on and offering help in some way. It is recognizing that through a woman we received “the fullness of our humanity, ‘the adoption as children’”. Jesus’ abasement raised us up, His lowliness made us great, His weakness made us strong. Because Jesus became a servant “we have received freedom”, the Pope said.Love is His name

In conclusion, Pope Francis said,

“What name can be given to all this if not Love ? The Love of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, to whom this evening holy Mother Church lifts up her hymn of praise and thanksgiving.”

God’s Word and Catechesis

Pastoral Letter of the 2018 Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to the Clergy, Religious and all the Laity

For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!

(1 Cor 9:16).

Very Reverend and Reverend Fathers!

Venerable Brothers and Sisters in religious and monastic life!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

Following His glorious Resurrection on the third day, our Saviour Jesus Christ entrusted His Apostles with a particular mission: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Mt 28, 19-20). To be Christians means to be followers of Jesus Christ, the only Teacher, bearers of His Spirit, heralds of His Good News and witnesses of the Truth, that is Jesus Himself. As a member of the Church of Christ, every Christian is called to grow in the discipleship of Jesus: by the Power and action of the Holy Spirit to know our Divine

Teacher, who is present in the community of the Church, ever deeper, and to share this experience with his or her neighbour.

Fulfilling His promise, “I am with you always, to the end of the age”, the Risen Christ abides in the Body of His Church in the Holy Mysteries (Sacraments) and in the Word of God. Every time we read the Holy Scriptures, we can hear the Word of our Teacher, who instructs us through His Holy Spirit, educates and leads us to all good things. In his Apostolic Exhortation, “Evangelii Gaudium” (The Joy of the Gospel), His Holiness Pope Francis stresses the intricate relationship between the Word of God and the study and passing on of faith, which is catechesis: “The study of the sacred Scriptures must be a door opened to every believer. It is essential that the revealed word radically enrich our catechesis and all our efforts to pass on the faith. Evangelization demands familiarity with

God’s word, which calls for dioceses, parishes and Catholic associations to provide for a serious, ongoing study of the Bible, while encouraging its prayerful, individual and communal reading” (par. 175).In reading the Word of God, reflecting upon it and praying with it, we meet Christ, come to know Him and accept Him. This is the task of catechetical ministry—not only to bring a person to an encounter with Jesus Christ, but also, having met Him, to believe in Him, to live in unity with Him and, in the words of St. Paul, to mature to the fullness of Christ.

When the apostles, who on the way from Jerusalem to Emmaus were talking and arguing among themselves about all that had happened, Jesus approaches them, guides them and interprets for them the Scriptures (see Luke 24:13-35). A person today also needs that kind of guidance in faith throughout his or her earthly journey

following Christ. The Church provides this guidance in many ways, especially through its catechetical ministry. “The goal of catechesis, as the essential work of the Church, is to teach and to form Christians in the faith, leading them into fellowship with Jesus Christ and the Church community” (Catechism of the UGCC, “Christ our Pascha”, 54). Providing continuous catechesis to children, youth, adults and the elderly throughout their life—that is an essential element of a vibrant parish as a place to encounter the living Christ.

We wish to emphasize that being a disciple of Christ is a task that requires us to be engaged throughout our entire life. This is precisely why the teaching and transmission of the faith (catechesis)—is not merely the preparation of children for their first Confession and solemn Holy Communion, but a

constant and continuous growth in the faith for all the faithful of Christ’s Church—children, youth, adults. Responsibility for the Proclamation of God’s Word and Catechesis

Having examined the state of the proclamation of the Word of God and catechetical ministry, we thank God for all the good and abundant fruits, which the proclamation of Christ’s Gospel has brought through the pastoral ministry of our Church, both in Ukraine and throughout the world. We wish to acknowledge and thank our priests, religious, catechists and parents—everyone who is sincerely dedicated to the proclamation of God’s Word and participates in the teaching and transmission of our holy faith.

The entire Church is responsible for the Christian formation of its faithful, for, as a mother, she cares for the birth into a new life in Christ, and nurtures the growth in faith of every person. The whole Church is called to share her faith and preach

the Gospel of salvation. However, each member of the Church fulfills this mission according to their particular calling in the Body of the Church. Our hope is that all the faithful, filled with the joy of encountering the living Christ and of membership in the church parish community, would live and share their faith in the Risen Christ.

The Family—Local Church, Parents—the First Nurturers of the Faith

We wish to express our deepest gratitude to the parents, grandparents and godparents who hand down the living treasure of faith from one generation to the next. We remember that throughout the difficult decades of the communistic regime, it was our families who became the place where the Holy Spirit would act, beyond the reach of atheistic propaganda—the place, where faith in God and faithfulness to the Church of Christ were nurtured and preserved.

At all times, no matter what the external circumstances, the family, as the local Church, was, is and shall be the first

God’s Word and Catechesis(continued from previous page)

locale for the nurturing and passing on of the faith. Therefore, also today we focus our gaze and attention on the family, in order to help it, and especially the parents, to deepen their own spiritual life, so that they might be capable of transmitting the gift of holy faith to their children and grandchildren. It is important task the parents should be supported by godparents, grandparents, family members, friends, school and parish community. We say “support” because in this responsible task no one can replace the nuclear family unit.

Dear Families! Our Venerable Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky said: “The family home is the first and most important school, where your children are to learn to love God and others. As will be that school, so will be the learning” (Khrystianska rodyna [The Christian Family], 13). Raise your children in a Christian spirit, create a particular atmosphere of family prayer—pray as a family before the holy icons, celebrate Sundays and holy days by participating with your children in the parish

Divine Liturgy. When celebrating together, cultivate Christian family traditions and practices, instill in your children a Christian outlook on life and develop in them a sense of belonging to the parish church community and native people.

Dear Parents! You are the first teachers of faith for your children. Teach them by the example of your everyday life and by the word of prayer. Proclaim to them the Gospel, read the Word of God, the lives of the Saints and especially the lives of our new martyrs who are models of a faith that is received, lived and witnessed. Begin your day with morning prayer and end the day with evening prayer, encouraging your children with the words: “Come, let’s pray.” Bear witness to your faith with your life.

Learn the Language of Faith

The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans states that “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (10,17). The “textbook” from

which we learn the language of faith is the Bible and Catechism of our Church. Therefore, we encourage you to treat the Holy Scriptures and the Catechism of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, “Christ our Pascha,” as the most important books in every family.

Our Venerable Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky teaches us how to read the Bible in the family: “It is necessary for every Christian to clearly understand the value of reading and knowing the Bible. The Holy Gospel is what sanctifies every home and showers it with grace, for it is bestows faith and love on its inhabitants. The Gospel protect them from harm, shows them the path in life, uplifts their hearts to heaven and cleanses their souls of stain. I would not hesitate to say that it heals all wounds of their bodies. The practice of reading the Holy Scriptures every day, even briefly, ought to become the practice of every Christian family. Such reading should be seen as daily nourishment. It is a healthy, healing and strengthening food…”

(On Venerating the Holy Cross).

The Priest in the Name of the Bishop is the Chief Catechist and Teacher of Faith in the Parish

We turn our attention to you, dear Reverend Fathers, brothers in the Priesthood. Help us organize, properly and with good content, and with a sense of your sacred obligation, the entire process of Christian teaching and education of children, youth and adults, to bring the Word of God and the truths of faith to all the faithful.

Proclaim the Word of God with zeal and passion. Support and lead the faithful to understand it and pray it. Establish Bible study groups in your parishes. Encourage your faithful in the practice of prayerful reading of the Word of God in the church community and in the family. Prepare your homilies carefully and in prayer, grounded in the Word of God, so that it might be “alive and active” in the lives of the faithful. Organize and personally lead study groups on the Catechism

of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in your parishes, so that the reading of this work might leads the people of God to an encounter with the Risen Christ, nourish their faith, provide answers to the problems of everyday life and inspire them to service.

You, dear priests, are responsible for the quality of catechesis in the parish. Take care that catechetical teaching be suited to each age group. Guide the children, youth and adults in their continuous growth in the faith. Together with your catechists plan catechism classes, meetings and other activities, paying attention to the gradual and systematic aspects of learning and education in the faith.

Remember the importance of transmitting the Christian faith with a sense of how people communicate today. Therefore, utilize new methods and means in the process of Christian learning and education. Take care of your catechists, ensuring their foundational and ongoing formation. Support their ministry both spiritually and materially.

Foster the task of catechesis and encourage others to do the same. Inspire and support the zeal for service, so that your parish can truly be a place of encounter with the Living Christ—a place of growth in the faith and of passing it on to the next generations.

Catechists—"Reliable Helpers of Priests in Catechetical Ministry”

We turn to you, dear catechists—laity and consecrated men and women, and we thank you sincerely for your dedicated service in the parishes. You are the reliable helpers of priests in the mission of Christian teaching and educating the next generations of the faithful of our Church. The Church highly values your vocation and ministry.

Your vocation to pass on the faith in the living Christ stems from the joy of your personal encounter with Him and your membership in the church parish community. Your desire to share this joy with

others, to help others encounter Christ, is the response to the strivings of a person today, who seeks “the Way, the Truth and the Life.” Help the child, youth and adult of today encounter Jesus, recognize His teaching and be nourished by the Word of God and the Blessed Eucharist.

On behalf of the Church, awaken, inspire and support the fervour to discover the Word of God and the truths of the faith, to live by them. Nurture in yourselves a life of personal prayer and lead to prayer those whom you are forming. Take care of your personal ongoing formation, in order to better serve God’s purpose and better respond to contemporary challenges. Be active and creative in your parish community. Be people of prayer and witnesses of Christian life.

Parish CommunityWe address all the faithful of our Church, for indeed, all members of the church community are called to be transmitters of faith. The development of the parish, the Church and

society depends on the conscientious fulfillment of this right and obligation by every Christian. A parish community ought to care for the spiritual-moral development of each of its members, and also to preach the Gospel to all people. The Parish community is to be the inspiration and motivation of catechesis, and the main source of its actualization.

We, therefore, call upon you to nurture vocations to the religious life, to the priestly and catechetical ministry. Show an appreciation for those who preach the Word of God, lead others to encounter Christ, educate and guide others in the faith. Pray for them, show them your appreciation and support.

Grow ever deeper in the knowledge of the Word of God, allow it to transform you. Read the Catechism of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, “Christ our Pascha,” in order to learn the truths of the faith and to live by them. Share the joy of meeting the Risen Christ and take active part

in the community and prayer life of the parish. Bear witness to your faith in your personal, family, professional and social circles. Live every day with faith, prayer and good works.

The Most Holy Theotokos is Mother and Disciple of Christ, who heard His Word and believed in Him, received Him and gave Him to the world. For us, she is the model of how to be followers of Christ and lead others to Him, so that in response to our faith witness people, who today call out, “We wish to see Jesus” (Jn 12:21) can recognize, accept Him, and live in unity with Him.

May the Most Holy Theotokos lead us in the mission of listening to the Word of God and incarnating it into our daily lives, so that ever more profoundly we may know the teaching of Christ, grow in the faith and pass it on to others with joy and fervour.

The blessing of the Lord be upon you!
