Pastor’s Letter Dear Parish Family,

Today is Palm Sunday, a day which has captured the imagination of Catholics for millennia. It

commemorates the triumphant entrance of Jesus into the holy city of Jerusalem only days before his

passion and death. For us it marks our entrance into the holiest week of the church year. Although

these days are undoubtedly the most important feasts of our faith, our church has never treated them as

days of obligation. How interesting!

Originally, holy days of obligation did not come into existence to compel the faithful to Mass

attendance out of guilt and fear. They were created so that Catholics could claim the right to be free to

worship — because their faith required it to be so. So Sunday became a day of obligation, and

therefore a day of freedom from other kinds of obligation such as work and chores. Feast days, too,

created a break in the routine lives of busy people, a time to celebrate and attend to something other

than everyday demands.

Sometimes people attend church in the absence of religious obligation. Thanksgiving Day is a great

example. Times of great need also motivate us to communal worship. Think of all those who came to

church in the days following September 11, 2001. So this week I write to you a word of

encouragement to enter more deeply into this holy week, not out of mere obligation but out of love and

respect for the important mysteries we celebrate.

Holy Thursday commemorates the institution of the Eucharist. It profoundly connects the Eucharist

to simple acts of loving service. And so we remember Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet. It is a

powerful and moving celebration.

Good Friday remembers the suffering and dying of Jesus. In embracing our human condition, our

Lord knew human suffering and death. On this day we try to see meaning in the most difficult of

human experiences: our own suffering, grief, and death.

The Easter Vigil Mass is rich in symbols of the Lord’s resurrection: fire, water, and the baptism and

confirmation of adults. There is no more powerful liturgy anywhere in our church year. Easter Masses

are filled with signs and symbols of newness and life.

So I extend to you an invitation. Invitations are always better than obligations. I can only tell you to

come and see, to be open and to experience. If you have never attended the liturgies of this most holy

week, then perhaps this year is your year to begin.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

A New Look for Our Sanctuary As you come to mass this week you will notice a new arrangement of our sanctuary. The presiders chair—the place where are priests and deacons are located during mass — is now aside the altar instead of on the top step of the altar of reservation. The reason for this is to allow our community to have an unobstructed view of our beautiful tabernacle. When we were sitting on the top step, our priests and deacons had their back to the tabernacle during mass and often blocked the view. The new platform under the priests chair moves our celebrants closer to the people. In addition to this spiritual advantage there is also a practical advantage. Sitting at the top of the altar steps put our priests on a very narrow ledge. It was, in fact, a somewhat dangerous arrangement. This new plan which was prepared in consultation with our diocesan office of worship will lend much dignity and simplicity to our already beautiful sanctuary.

March 3, 2013 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: August 1, 2013 is the deadline for certain organizations in the Diocese such as Catholic Charities and Catholic Health Services of Long Island to comply with the HHS mandate that they provide free artificial contracep-tion and abortifacient medications as part of their compliance with the Affordable Care Act. Without being specific, indications from the Obama Administration are that they will no longer listen to our claims or those who share our religious and conscience convictions. The latest Administration pronouncements were a disappointment. After a week of analyzing this latest pro-posal from the Administration, Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, President of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, expressed our willingness to continue to try to convince the government that the objectively inadequate “accommodation” from the HHS continues to fall far short of the mark. To me, the major problem is in the very word the Administration uses: accommodation. The state is not the giver of rights, especially religious freedom. We as citizens possess the right to religious freedom without government pronouncement and, in truth, the Administration cannot “accommodate” what is already ours. We should not be treated as if we are second class citizens because we disagree with the government’s new and arbitrary insistence that all of us have to follow their prescriptions despite our religious beliefs and our right to freedom of conscience. Those rights are God-given, not state-granted. Every person and every religious insti-tution already has from God what is guaranteed in our Constitution and Bill of Rights: freedom of religion and of conscience. Now in the middle of Lent I write to you to ask you first of all to pray that God will protect us and our God-given rights as persons and as a Church. Second, I invite you to stay informed and be ready to respond to our calls for help as needed. Keep your eye on the website of the US Bishops www.usccb.org as well as our news website www.licatholic.org to keep up-to-date and find concrete ways for concerted action. To get involved, please consider joining grass roots advocacy groups forming in parishes across the Diocese, such as Catholics for Freedom of Religion www.catholicsforfreedomofreligion.com. I encourage you to consider participation in such a group. Let our Senators and your Congressperson know that you and I have not lost interest. Tell them we are resolute in insisting on this most basic freedom, the freedom of religious belief and the protection of conscience. To contact your US Senators and Representatives, go to the website of the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment www.nchla.org. Send an email to your Representatives to demand the overturning of the HHS mandate. Plans are also being made for the Second Fortnight for Freedom that will take place this summer. More details about the Fortnight will be forthcoming. Continue to pray that what is ours by right will be recognized and honored for the good of all. And continue to stand together. Your witness is needed now more than ever.

Devotedly yours in Christ,

By María Dolores Martínez,
