We will not speak about it today, sorry :-D

Blender as a design tool:It's more about designing directly in 3D within Blender, than modeling designs that have already been thought.

Part 1 : Technical Design

Part 2 : Concept or free-form design.

Tecnical design from scratch

5 ∕ 31

It's possible to design parts and details:Snapping tools, Modifiers (boolean, bevel, array)

The tools are too be learned and well known, but their use is then so fast that I prefer it for many tasks to my architectural software.

features vs usability, flexibility and versatility

And for the final design, the rounded façades could'nt be done without Blender

Exploring forms and spaces with the various tools of Blender

"Parametric" design 1

18 ∕ 31

Design a base structure that can then be duplicated and deformed by only one curve.

Editing the curve allow to test the forms and explore how the building can integrate itself with its environment.

Designing a pedestrian bridge 1

22 ∕ 31

I had the general concept: a suspended bridge made of "slices" of wooden panels.

I used the tools I already knew to achieve it, testing the forms and characteristicsthrough the whole designing phase.

Designing a pedestrian bridge 2

23 ∕ 31

A plan with an array along a curve allows to change the orientation of the slicesA set of boolean modifiers and solidify modifiers cut the slices from a mesh

The use of modifiers allow to change at any time the design

Adaptive building

25 ∕ 31

The modifers allow to wrap the structure and windows around the floors.Modifyng the floors make the whole structure adapting itself.

Exploring new tools 1

26 ∕ 31

Playing around freely with new tools is necessary (and fun !):It enpowers your toolbox for the next competitions.

It leads you to new ideas and designs.

The initial form is fractured with cell fracturethen its deformed through softbody simulation (à la Gaudi)

Exploring new tools 4

29 ∕ 31

The Cycles interactive rendering allows to really explore light and materials

Conclusion 1

30 ∕ 31

One needs to know the tools and practice it.

It's necessary to explore and try (when you have a tight deadline it's too late for experimentation).

You must know what you are able to do

But no need to have ten years of experience:My students manage to got those very nice results after 4 days .

Thanks a lot
