BLAST OFF with Books!

April 28, 2016 | Burlington International Airport

In the evening, attendees will get the opportunity to mix and mingle with the authors and participate in a literary scavenger hunt. Engaging conversation, fun music, delicious food, silent auction, and a cash bar. www.sterncenter.org

Evening with the Authors $25 per person

Afternoon Activities | 1:00 pm—5:00 pm  Our afternoon programs bring history alive, inspire us to share our challenges and joys, learn more from food writers, cookbook authors and novelists who create the captivating stories that enrich our lives.   Historian Willard Sterne Randall, a prize winning biographer of leading figures such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton and Ethan Allen, answers the question, “Was Ethan Allen the Founding Father of Vermont?”

Author Karen Newman shares her inspirational story in her recently published book:  Just Three Words.  Athlete, Mother, Survivor: How One Brave Woman‐Against All  Odds‐ Wins the Race of her Life:   Karen Newman’s gripping, intimate and contagiously inspiring story of overcoming unspeakable hardships.  Karen weaves the agonies of anorexia, bulimia and cancer with the thrill of young love, exhilarating wins on the race course, and the miracle of victory over disease.    Biographer Janet Biehl will discuss the life of social theorist, author, and activist Murray Bookchin  (1921‐2006), who shed the Marxism of his youth in 1930s and 1940s New York in favor of a new socialist revolutionary program. Although born in the Bronx, Bookchin had much to do with Vermont: he co‐founded the Institute for Social Ecology in Plainfield in 1974 and lived full time in Burlington from 1982. He was ahead of his time, and his ideas have gained a new relevance today with the widespread popular rejection of concentrated wealth and power and the growing demand for a cooperative, democratic, ecological society.

Afternoon Activities | 1:00 pm—5:00 pm  Vermont’s New Food Landscape | Panel  Come learn from a range of people who love Vermont food.  Panel members are Katie Webster, author of  Maple: 100 Sweet and Savory Recipes; Tracey Medeiros, author of Dishing Up Vermont; Bronwyn Dunne, food blogger commentator and freelance writer; and Barry Estabrook, author of Pig Tales, An Omnivore’s Quest for Sustainable Meat. Cathy Donnelly, UVM food microbiology professor will be our panel moderator.
