February 2016

Hero of the Month Jamie McLean

Jamie has been an Operations Officer with Clontarf Academy at Rosebery Middle School (RMS) since 2011.

The Rosebery Clontarf Academy programme was established in 2011 and operates out of RMS catering for year 7-9 students.

There are four Clontarf Operations Officers based at RMS who provide daily mentoring to Aboriginal boys to engage them in school. There are currently seven Clontarf academies in the wider Darwin region.

The Clontarf Foundation exists to improve the education, discipline, life skills, self-esteem and employment prospects of young Aboriginal men and equips them to participate meaningfully in society.

Since opening its first Academy for 25 boys in 2000 the Foundation has grown to cater for about 3,700 boys in 68 schools across Western Australia, Northern Territory, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.

Jamie’s interest in Clontarf came from the involvement of his father in the Academy while he was in school. Jamie worked at Driver Primary School for four years delivering sporting programs and when the Rosebery Clontarf Academy Programme was established he had no hesitation putting his hand up for a role with them.

Jamie says the most fulfilling part of the job is “Seeing the boys again when they leave Rosebery to go on to senior school and how far they have come.

Catching up with them and seeing what they are doing after finishing school and their achievements. Helping the boys head in the right direction all makes it really worth while”.

More information on the Clontarf Foundation can be found at www.clontarf.org.au

The new fence that has been put up at Moulden Oval looks great.

Hopefully this will continue to deter any vandalism of the oval so that the Crocs Rugby Union Club and Moulden Park School can use it safely.

The works for Moulden oval were completed late last year and was joint funded through Department of Education and Department of Sport & Recreation after concerns from the public, Moulden School and Crocs Rugby Union Club.

I held a community talk in Rosebery at Carallia Park off Flametree Circuit on Sunday 17 January to discuss any concerns about crime in the area due to some residents posting on facebook their concerns.

Daniel Shean, Superintendent of Palmerston and Rural Police came down to answer any questions from the public as well.

Thank you to all of those who came to have a chat and get some information. It was great to meet you all and discuss what your local community issues are.

Delivery of the Northern Territory Government Palmerston Road Upgrades program is underway, which will provide a safe traffic environment and allow for a greater movement of vehicles in and around the Palmerston city.

As part of the program, the Elrundie Avenue and Bonson Terrace intersection is being upgraded to improve safety and traffic flow. Works at the intersection commenced in early January 2016 and include:

• construction of a new left hand turn lane into Bonson Terrace;

• improving street lighting in the area; and

• upgrading the shared user path.

To allow for works, the Elrundie Avenue and Bonson Terrace intersection will be closed to all traffic. For access on to Bonson Terrace, motorists are asked to travel via Tilston Avenue and Tamarind Road.

Access to properties neighbouring the site will be maintained at all times.

Public transport urban bus route 70 (including A and B deviations) and school services 232, 237 and 225 will be adjusted.

For information on the changes contact 8924 7666 or visit www.transport.nt.gov.au/publictransport

Traffic management will be in place to ensure motorists are aware of the changed conditions which includes lane closures and temporary detours.

It is anticipated that the project will be complete by April 2016, weather permitting.

For further information contact the Department of Infrastructure’s Project Director- Civil Darwin, Arthur Busato on 8999 4499 or email [email protected]

New Bus stop for Bonson Terrace near Moulden OvalThe existing Bus Stop in front of the Moulden Primary School will remain as a school bus stop.

A new public bus stop has been constructed along Bonson Tce for the public bus service.

The new stop is a small concrete slab and totem only near the Moulden Oval as it is only a temporary location, and will be relocated to Tamarind Road just up around the corner under the network review.

The new stop is currently not in use as the intersection upgrade works at Elrundie Ave/Bonson Tce has re-routed the public bus service along Tamarind Road.

The intersection works will be complete around April 2016 when normal bus routes will resume and the new public bus stop on Bonson Tce will then be in use.
