If you have never worked with Google Documents, this handout will describe the options available on the View and Insert menus.

Access your Google Document through the MySVC link on the Skagit Valley College web site.

Click MyDocs.

At the Google Docs opening screen, click Create New. To create a new word processing document, choose Document.

This document window appears.

You may choose to show comments that have been included in the document. This is especially useful if you are working with a group or another person and many of you are sharing the creation of the document. You insert a comment through the “Insert” menu.

You may choose to show a ruler or an equation toolbar as well. Click Show Spelling Suggestions to have Google Docs help you with spelling!

Use the Insert command to insert items into your document.

Click Image to open the dialog box shown below. You can insert an image from the computer on which you are working or from the Internet. However, if you choose to download an image from the Internet, ensure you have the right to use it. Most images from the Internet are subject to copyright.

Highlight some text in your document and click Link to open the Edit Link dialog box. You may insert a web address (URL), an eamil address, or a bookmark, The text you have highlighted will appear in the “Link Display” field.

Click Equation to open the Equation toolbar. Choose one of the options to insert an equation in your document.

There are five types of equations you can enter.

Click Drawing to create a drawing to be included in your document.

Special Characters are symbols and arrows that you might need in your document.

The Horizontal Line option allows you to insert a horizontal line in your document. If you are familiar with HTML, this is the same type of line.

Comments and Footnotes and the rest of the options are self-explanatory.
