Create a Blackboard Assignment

WHEN YOU CREATE AN ASSIGNMENT USING THIS METHOD A COLUMN IS AUTOMATICALLY CREATED IN GRADE CENTER.

START POINT: To create assessment items, you must be in a course shell. Edit Mode MUST be ON!

Step 1: Select the Content Area (e.g. Assignments) in which you’d like to post the assignment from the course menu on the left of the screen.

Step2: Click the ‘Assessments’ button & choose Assignment from the drop down menu. If the assignment should go in a folder, make sure you are in the correct location before creating the item.

Step 3: Fill in the name and instructions for the assignment item.

Step 4: Optional: Scroll down the page & select the ‘Browse My Computer’ or ‘Browse Course’ button to attach an instructions document. You also have the ability to assign course alignments to the item.

Step 5: *IMPORTANT!* Set the points possible. You must set a value for POINTS possible. This is the maximum number of marks available for this column. (ie: assignment is out of 100 marks you would enter 100).

NOTE: This is different from assigning a weight to the item.

Step 6: If there is a rubric created for the assessment portion of the assignment, one can be attached for student reference or one can be created using Blackboard’s Rubric builder. For more information, including setup options, please see the Rubric Tipsheet.

Step 7:

Set the appropriate options. In most cases, default options are recommended; however, you may wish to tailor the settings to your specific requirements.

Make the Assignment Available: Must be “Yes” for students

to have access to the assessment. If you’d like to post the

document, but limit your students from seeing it until class

time, take the check mark off. You will have to go back in &

turn it on when you want the students to be able to see it.

Number of Attempts: Allow students to repeat the

assessment. Can be set to single, unlimited, or specific

number of attempts.

Limit Availability: If you use date restrictions, you MUST

check the box for display after and Display Until & enter

an end date. Display After sets when it becomes available,

and Display Until sets when it is no longer available. If you

want this to be a permanent posting, set that date for the end of the semester.

Track Number of Views: Keep statistics on when students access the assignment

Step 8: Optional: Setting a due date helps to monitor when assignments are received. If submitted after the due date, a flag will be set in the grade center. To set a due date you must first select this option, and then use the calendar & clock icons to set the date and time.

Step 9: Assign the assessment to all students or to groups of students.

Step 9b: If this is a group assignment, you will need to decide which group or group set to assign this project to. Select groups from the left by clicking then & then click the > arrow to bring them to the ‘Selected Items’ windows on the right. NOTE: If groups have not yet been created they will need to be setup before proceeding. Please refer to the appropriate tip sheet for instructions.

Step 10: Click the ‘Submit’ button.

Students can now access the assignment from the content area in which it was posted. They have the ability to enter their completed assignment directly to the text box provided on the submission screen or attach a word or pdf document for you to view and grade electronically.

View the Submitted Attempts and Assign a Grade

When an assignment is created, a column is automatically added to the Grade Center. An assignment that has been submitted, but not graded, is indicated by a green icon with a white exclamation mark; the needs grading icon.

You can access assignments that have been submitted by students and need grading from the Needs Grading or Full Grade Center pages.

Note: You also have the option to grade assignments anonymously.

Grade from the Needs Grading Page For courses with many enrolled students and gradable items, the Needs Grading page can help you determine which assignments need grading first. For example, you can sort by the date submitted to provide feedback to the earliest submitters first.

Step 1:

On the Control Panel, expand the Grade Center section.

Step 2:

Select the Needs Grading smart view link.

Step 3:

The total number of items to grade appears on the Needs Grading page. You can use the Filter drop-down lists or click on the column header link to narrow the list of items to grade by Category, Item, User, and Date Submitted.

Step 4:

You can use the Grade All button in the upper left corner to grade everything or you can use the down arrow button beside each submission to view and grade the attempts.

Allow Additional Submission Attempts If a student has submitted the maximum number of attempts for an assignment but you want to give them another opportunity, you can allow them to submit again.

Step 1:

In the Control Panel, expand the Grade Center section.

Step 2:

Select Full Grade Center or the Assignments smart view to access assignment attempts.

Step 3:

Locate the cell for a student's assignment containing an exclamation mark.

Step 4:

Move the mouse pointer over the cell to see the down arrow button. Click the button to access the contextual menu.

Step 5:

Select View Grade Details. The Grade Details page appears.

Step 6:

Click Allow Additional Attempt, and then confirm.

Note: The Allow Additional Attempt button will only appear if the student has already submitted the maximum number of attempts allowed for that assignment. You can continue to offer opportunities to resubmit attempts each time the student reaches that maximum number. Previous attempts do not have to be graded to allow the student to submit again.
