Getting started

About BlackBerry LinkWith devices running BlackBerry 10 OS, you can use BlackBerry Link on a computer to:

• Import your Address Book contacts to your smartphones running BlackBerry 10 OS or later.• Sync music, pictures, videos, and documents between your BlackBerry device and your computer over a USB

connection or Wi-Fi connection.• Back up and restore your device data.• Transfer supported settings and data to your new device.• Manage multiple devices that use the same or a different BlackBerry ID.• Update or reinstall your device software.

BlackBerry Link supports BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry 10 OS and BlackBerry PlayBook tablets running BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1.

With devices running BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.1 or later, you can also allow remote file access, so that your smartphone can access files stored in the libraries on your computer.

Getting to know BlackBerry LinkBlackBerry Link displays the BlackBerry devices and the computer you have set up with BlackBerry Link at the bottom of the screen. You can see the devices that are connected using a USB cable or over a Wi-Fi network. Disconnected devices are hidden. You can click the icon at the bottom of the screen to view the devices that you have set up but that are disconnected. The icon also allows you to switch to a new device.

The main views in BlackBerry Link are the Content view and the Settings view. You can click the icon at the top of the screen to switch between the two views.

You can open the Content view and the Settings view for your computer and for each device you set up with BlackBerry Link.

View Description

Content This view displays the music, pictures, videos, and documents on your device or your computer. You can sync files between your computer and device by selecting a category and dragging the files to your computer or your device.

Settings This view displays your settings for backup and restore, synchronization, remote file access, and wireless syncing.

View Description

In the Settings view for your computer, you can view the version of BlackBerry Link you have installed. In the Settings view for your device, you can view the device software version installed on your device. If an update is available for BlackBerry Link or for your device software, the update is available in the Settings view.

Connecting to BlackBerry Link

About connecting to BlackBerry LinkTo connect your BlackBerry device to BlackBerry Link you can use a USB cable or a Wi-Fi connection.

Connection method Description

USB cable When you use a USB cable to connect your device to your computer, you can access all of the features in BlackBerry Link. Certain actions, such as updating your device software and backing up and restoring device data, can only be completed when you connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.

Wi-Fi network When your device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer, and your device is also connected to a power source (such as an electrical outlet or a computer), you can sync your music, pictures, videos, and documents. You can also access on your files from your device. For information about how to connect your device to a Wi-Fi network, tap the Help app on the home screen of your device.

By default, BlackBerry Link allows Wi-Fi connections. If your computer doesn't have a Wi-Fi network or you don't want to allow Wi-Fi connections to BlackBerry Link, you can turn off this feature.

Turn off Wi-Fi connections to BlackBerry LinkBy default, the option to connect your BlackBerry device to BlackBerry Link over a Wi-Fi network is turned on when you add your device to BlackBerry Link. If you don't want to allow Wi-Fi connections to BlackBerry Link, you can turn off Wi-Fi connections. Turning off Wi-Fi connnections doesn't turn off Wi-Fi on your device.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. At the bottom of the screen, click your device.3. Click the icon.4. In the Settings view, click Wireless Sync.5. Clear the Turn on wireless connections to my computer checkbox.

To turn on wireless connections, select the Turn on wireless connections to my computer checkbox.

Set up your computer with BlackBerry LinkThe first time you open BlackBerry Link, you can give your computer a display name that identifies your computer in BlackBerry Link and on your BlackBerry device. BlackBerry Link displays the default media libraries on your computer that contain music, pictures, and videos that you can sync with your device, and access from your device. You can set up your documents library and sign in to your BlackBerry ID, or if you don't have a BlackBerry ID, you can create one.

Before you begin: To set up your BlackBerry ID with BlackBerry Link make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. Type a display name for your computer. Click Next.3. Do one of the following:

• To add your default documents library, select the Documents Folder option. Click Next.• To add a different folder to your documents library, select the Custom Folder option and click the icon. Browse

to the folder you want to add. Click Open. Click Next.4. If you have an Internet connection, do one of the following:

• If you have a BlackBerry ID, type your BlackBerry ID login information. Click Sign In.• If you don't have a BlackBerry ID but you want one, click Create New. Complete the instructions on the BlackBerry

ID website. In BlackBerry Link, type your BlackBerry ID login information. Click Sign In.5. If you sign in with your BlackBerry ID and your device is running BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.1 or later, select the

checkboxes beside the devices you want to grant remote file access to.6. Click Finish.

Set up your device with BlackBerry LinkWhen you set up your BlackBerry device with BlackBerry Link, you can give your device a display name that identifies your device in BlackBerry Link and appears as your device name on your device. You can also set whether or not you want to automatically sync music, pictures, videos, and documents between your computer and your device.

If you have a BlackBerry smartphone that is running BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 or later or a device that is running BlackBerry 10 OS and you want to transfer your data to a new device running BlackBerry 10 OS, you can transfer supported data when you set up your new device with BlackBerry Link.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.3. At the bottom of the screen, click your device.4. If necessary, type the password for your device.5. Type a display name for your device.6. Do one of the following:

• To establish a permanent connection with your computer, select the Link this device and this computer checkbox.• To establish a one-time connection with your computer, select the Do not link this device and this computer. This

is a one-time connection checkbox.7. Do one of the following:

• To add your device to BlackBerry Link without transferring data from an old device or updating the device software, click Next.

• To transfer data before you add your device to BlackBerry Link, choose which data you want to transfer from a previous device, and click Next. Follow the instructions on the screen. For more information, see Switch to a new device

8. If necessary, do the following:

• If existing data is found on your new smartphone, select specific content types,such as music, pictures, videos, or documents that you want to transfer to your computer. Click Finish.

About BlackBerry ID and BlackBerry LinkYour BlackBerry ID is an username (email address) and password that you can use to access BlackBerry products that support BlackBerry ID, such as Print To Go and the BlackBerry World storefront. In many situations, your BlackBerry ID allows BlackBerry products to work seamlessly without prompting you to enter your user name and password.

You might have created a BlackBerry ID when you set up your BlackBerry device or when you purchased apps for your device. If you don't have a BlackBerry ID and you want one, you can create it from BlackBerry Link.

When you sign in with your BlackBerry ID in BlackBerry Link, your computer becomes another device that is associated with your BlackBerry ID. Your devices running BlackBerry 10 OS or that are associated with your BlackBerry ID appear in BlackBerry Link.

On devices running BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.1 or later, you can set up remote file access to allow your device to access the music, pictures, videos, and documents libraries on your computer.

Sign in to a different BlackBerry IDIf you have more than one BlackBerry ID or if other people use BlackBerry Link on your computer to manage their BlackBerry devices, make sure you sign in with the correct BlackBerry ID to manage the devices running BlackBerry 10 OS that are associated with that BlackBerry ID.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. At the top of the screen, beside the active BlackBerry ID, click Sign Out.3. At the top of the screen, click Sign In.4. Type your BlackBerry ID login information.5. Click Sign In.

Create and sign in with your BlackBerry IDThe first time you open BlackBerry Link, if you don't have an Internet connection you can't create or sign in with your BlackBerry ID. That's okay. When you have an Internet connection, you can open the BlackBerry ID website from BlackBerry Link and create a BlackBerry ID. After you create your BlackBerry ID, you can sign in with your BlackBerry ID on your BlackBerry device and from BlackBerry Link.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. At the top of the screen, click Sign In.3. Click Create New. Complete the instructions on the BlackBerry ID website.4. On your device, sign in with your BlackBerry ID. For information about how to sign in with your BlackBerry ID from your

device, tap the Help app on the home screen of your device.5. In BlackBerry Link, type your BlackBerry ID login information.6. Click Sign In.

Recover your BlackBerry ID passwordIf you forget the password for your BlackBerry ID, you can have password recovery instructions sent to the email address that you use as your BlackBerry ID username. For security reasons, your password recovery email can only be viewed on a computer, and it is not delivered to your BlackBerry device.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. At the top of the screen, click Sign In.3. Click Forgot password.

4. Complete the instructions on the BlackBerry ID website.

Change the display name of your computer or deviceYou can change the display names that you defined when you set up your computer and your BlackBerry device with BlackBerry Link. Your display names identify your computer and your device in BlackBerry Link and on your device.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. At the bottom of the screen, click your computer or device.3. Click the icon.4. In the Settings view, in the left pane, click the icon beside the display name.5. Delete the display name and type a new display name. Press Enter.

Set automatic processes for BlackBerry LinkYou can set up some processes to start automatically when you connect your BlackBerry device to your computer, when you log in to your computer, or when you open BlackBerry Link.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. At the bottom of the screen, click your computer.3. Click the icon.4. In the Settings view, click General.5. Do any of the following:

• To open BlackBerry Link when you log in to your computer, select the Open BlackBerry Link when you log in to your computer checkbox.

• To open BlackBerry Link when you connect your device to your computer, select the Open BlackBerry Link when a device is connected checkbox.

• To check for and download software updates when you have an Internet connection, select the Automatically download updates for your device software and BlackBerry Link checkbox.

View information about your deviceYou can view information in BlackBerry Link about your BlackBerry device, including:

• Device model• PIN number• Device software version• Date and time stamp for your most recent backup file• Date and time stamp for when you last synced your music, pictures, videos, and documents

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. At the bottom of the screen, click your device.3. Click the icon.4. In the Settings view, in the left pane, click the icon beside the name of your device.

Remove your device from BlackBerry LinkIf you want to stop associating your BlackBerry device with BlackBerry Link, you can remove your device from BlackBerry Link. After a device is removed from BlackBerry Link, you can't use BlackBerry Link to sync the data between that device and your computer, or use the remote file access feature to access files on your computer from that device.

Note:

If your device is associated with a BlackBerry ID, sign out of BlackBerry ID first

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. If necessary, sign out of BlackBerry ID.3. At the bottom of the screen, click your device.4. Click the icon.5. In the Settings view, in the left pane, click Remove Device.6. Click OK.

Tip: To remove your device, you can also click beside your device at the bottom of your screen. Click Remove Device.

Import your contacts from Mac Address BookIf you want to import the contacts from Microsoft Outlook on your Mac you can first turn on Sync Services to sync your Microsoft Outlook contacts with your Mac Address Book.

You can import the contacts from your Mac Address Book to your BlackBerry device running BlackBerry 10 OS or later. This import is a one-way transfer of data from your computer to your device. You might be prompted to import your contacts and contacts groups the first time you set up your device in BlackBerry Link. If not, you can complete the import later.

CAUTION:

Contacts on your device won’t remain synced with contacts on your computer if you choose to import your contacts again the next time that you connect your device to your computer .

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. Connect your BlackBerry device to your computer with a USB cable.3. In BlackBerry Link, click the icon.4. Click Import Contacts.5. Follow the instructions on the screen to transfer your contacts to your device.

Troubleshooting: Getting started

I don't see my device in BlackBerry LinkTry the following:

• If you're using a USB cable to connect your BlackBerry device to your computer, verify that the USB cable isn't damaged.

• Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to your device.• If you're using a Wi-Fi network to connect your device to your computer, verify that your Wi-Fi network is turned on, that

you have allowed Wi-Fi access in BlackBerry Link, and that your device is connected to a power source.• On your computer, turn off synchronization applications or antivirus applications temporarily.

If you have a BlackBerry ID, try the following:

• Confirm that you have entered the correct username and password, and that you signed in with a valid BlackBerry ID.• Verify that you are signed in with the same BlackBerry ID on your computer and on your device.• Sign out of BlackBerry Link and sign in again.• Verify that you are connected to and are able to browse the Internet.• If you’re using antivirus software on your computer, check that the firewall is not blocking your connection to

BlackBerry Link.• Reset your BlackBerry ID username and password at www.blackberry.com/bbid.

If your device is not running BlackBerry 10 OS, try the following:

• If you are trying to transfer data from your old BlackBerry smartphone to your new device, verify that your old smartphone is running BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 or later.

• If you are trying to sync your media files, back up or restore your device data, or update your device software, visit www.blackberry.com/desktop to download and install BlackBerry Desktop Software. (BlackBerry Link doesn't support smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software, or BlackBerry PlayBook tablets running BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0.1 or earlier.) BlackBerry Desktop Software can be installed on the same computer as BlackBerry Link.

Backing up and restoring device data

About backing up and restoring dataYou can back up and restore most of the data on your BlackBerry device, including settings, phone history, fonts, saved searches, browser bookmarks, messages, organizer data, and media files.

You should regularly create and save a backup file on your computer, especially before you update any software. Maintaining an up-to-date backup file on your computer might allow you to recover device data if your device is lost, stolen, or corrupted by an unforeseen issue.

Set backup preferencesYou can set up BlackBerry Link to automatically back up your BlackBerry device data when you connect your device to your computer. You can also customize the backup file name that BlackBerry Link creates and select which types of data to include in your backup file.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. At the bottom of the screen, click your device.3. Click the icon.4. In the Settings view, click General.5. To set up BlackBerry Link to automatically back up your device data, do the following:

• Select the Back up my device checkbox.• In the drop-down list, select how often you want to back up your device data and settings.

By default, BlackBerry Link backs up all of your device data.6. To back up specific data, do the following:

• Select the Select data to include in your backup files checkbox.• Select the checkboxes beside the data you want to include in your backup files.

7. To change the backup file name, click the icon beside the File name field and type a new backup file name. Press Enter.

Back up your device dataYou can manually back up the data on your BlackBerry device at any time. By default, BlackBerry Link backs up all of the data on your device. If you set backup preferences, BlackBerry Link creates a backup file containing the data you specify.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.3. At the bottom of the screen, click your device.4. Click the icon.5. In the Settings view, in the left pane, click Back Up Now.

Change the location of backup files on your computerBy default, BlackBerry Link saves your backup files to Users/<name>/Documents/BlackBerry Backups.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. At the bottom of the screen, click your computer.3. Click the icon.4. In the Settings view, click General.5. Beside the Device backup location field, click Change.6. Browse to a new backup file location and click OK.

Restore your device dataYou can restore a backup file that you created from your BlackBerry device running BlackBerry 10 OS or from your BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 or later.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. At the bottom of the screen, click your device.3. Click the icon.4. In the Settings view, in the left pane, click Restore Data.5. Click Restore from backup file.

6. Do one of the following:

• To restore all of the data in a backup file to your device, click a backup file.• To restore specific data in a backup file to your device, click a backup file. Clear the Restore all data checkbox.

Select the checkbox beside one or more databases that you want to restore.• To restore data from a backup file that is not listed, click Open another backup folder. Navigate to the .bbb file

or .ipd file. Click OK.7. Click Restore Data.

Troubleshooting: Backing up and restoring device data

I can't create a backup file that contains all of my device dataTry the following:

• Connect your BlackBerry device to your computer using a USB cable. You can't create a backup file of your device data over a Wi-Fi network.

• Verify that you are signed in to your BlackBerry ID on your device. If you are not signed in, BlackBerry Link can't back up the data in your personal space.

If your device is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server or on BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, try the following:

• Verify that you entered the password on your device to unlock your work space. BlackBerry Link can't back up the data in your work space if your work space is locked.

I can't restore a backup file to my deviceTry the following:

• Connect your BlackBerry device to your computer using a USB cable. You can't restore the data to your device over a Wi-Fi network.

• Verify that you are signed in to your BlackBerry ID on your device. If you are not signed in, BlackBerry Link can't restore the data to your personal space.

• Verify that the same BlackBerry ID used on the device to create the backup file is being used on the device you are trying to restore the backup file to. On your device, try signing in to the BlackBerry ID that is associated with the backup file.

• Verify that you entered the password on your device to unlock your work space. BlackBerry Link can't restore the data to your work space if your work space is locked.

Accessing files on your computer from your device

About accessing files on your computer from your deviceImagine arriving at a meeting, only to discover that a document you need is on your computer. With remote access, you can use the File Manager app on your BlackBerry device to view, download, and delete music, pictures, videos, and documents that are on the computer that BlackBerry Link is installed on. For information about how to use the File Manager, tap the Help app on the home screen of your device.

By default, devices running BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.1 that you set up with BlackBerry Link can access the files in your music, pictures, videos, and documents libraries on your computer if they are associated with the same BlackBerry ID that you are signed in to BlackBerry Link with. Turn off remote file accessBy default, if you are signed in toBlackBerry ID in BlackBerry Link, remote file access is turned on when you set up your BlackBerry device with BlackBerry Link. You can turn off remote file access for devices that you have added to BlackBerry Link.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. At the bottom of the screen, click your computer.3. Click the icon.4. In the Settings view, click Remote File Access.5. Do one of the following:

• To turn off remote file access for a specific device, clear the checkbox beside the device name.• To turn off file library access for all devices, clear the checkbox beside each of the device names.

To turn on remote file access for a device, select the checkbox beside the device name.

I can't access my computer files from my deviceTry any of the following actions:

• Verify that the computer that has BlackBerry Link installed on it is turned on and has an active Internet connection.• Confirm that you are signed in to your BlackBerry ID in BlackBerry Link.• Confirm that you are signed in to your BlackBerry ID on your BlackBerry device. You must be signed in with the same

BlackBerry ID on your device and in BlackBerry Link.• Verify that your device is connected to a wireless network. For information about how to connect your device to a Wi-Fi

network, tap the Help app on the home screen of your device.• Verify that you have music, picture, video, or document files in the libraries on your computer. If there are no files in the

libraries, add supported files or add folders to your library.• Confirm that you are using a device running BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.1 or later. You can't access the files on your

computer by using a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet running BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1.

Syncing music, pictures, videos, and documents

About syncing music, pictures, videos, and documentsYou use your BlackBerry device to capture life's moments. BlackBerry Link lets you keep the media files and documents on your device and your computer in sync so that you can relive your memories or share them with friends wherever you are.

By default, automatic sync is turned on for the new music, pictures, videos, and documents on devices that are linked with your computer. your device. You must manually set the sync relationships for the music, pictures, videos, and documents that existed on your computer or on your device before you set up BlackBerry Link. After you manually sync your existing files, updates automatically sync between your computer and your device.

If you don't want to automatically sync all of your media files and documents, you can turn off automatic sync. Instead, you can manually drag individual files or collections of files between your computer and your device. If automatic sync is turned off, BlackBerry Link doesn't sync changes to the files that you manually sync between your computer and your device. If there are changes to the files you have manually synced, you must re-sync those files.

If your device loses its connection to BlackBerry Link (when you connect your device to your computer either by using a USB cable, or over a Wi-Fi network while your device is connected to a power source), your music, pictures, videos, and documents continue to sync when your connection is re-established.

About deleting music, pictures, videos, and documentsAfter you sync your music, picture, video, or document files between your computer and your BlackBerry device, if you delete a file or a collection of files, the following actions occur:

• If you delete files from your computer, BlackBerry Link doesn't delete the file or collection from your device.• If you delete files from your device, BlackBerry Link doesn't delete the file or collection from your computer.

For information about how to delete a file from your device, tap the Help app on the home screen of your device.

Sync iconsIcons help you identify the sync relationship that exists between the music, picture, video, and document files on your BlackBerry device and the files on your computer.

Sync icons can appear on individual thumbnails, beside folders, or beside collections of files. You must hover over a thumbnail to see the sync icon. If you sync a folder on your device with your computer, all the files within the folder have the same sync relationship as the parent folder.

Icon Description

This icon indicates that the file or folder on your device is synced between your device and your computer. Changes to the file or folder automatically sync between your device and your computer.

If you click this icon, you turn off sync for the file or folder.

This icon indicates that sync is turned off for the file or folder on your device. The file or folder was previously synced between your device and your computer. Changes to this file or folder won't sync between your device and your computer.

If you click this icon, you turn on sync for the file or folder.

No sync icon When a sync icon is not displayed, there is no sync relationship between your device and your computer for the file or folder. This file or folder only exists on your device.

Turn off automatic syncIf you don't want all of your new music, pictures, videos, and documents, and changes to those files, to automatically sync between your computer and your BlackBerry device, you can turn off automatic sync for all or some of your files. By default, automatic sync is turned on for music, pictures, videos, and documents when you set up your device with BlackBerry Link.

If you turn off automatic sync, you can manually sync files between your computer and your device. You must also manually sync any changes to the files that you manually synced.

Manually sync your musicBy default, BlackBerry Link automatically syncs new music between your computer and your BlackBerry device so that you can have your favorite songs at your fingertips. If you turn off automatic sync, or if you want to sync music that was on your computer or your device before you set up BlackBerry Link, you can manually sync your music.

You can sync individual songs or collections of music by playlist, album, artist, or genre.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. Do one of the following:

• To sync music from your computer to your device, at the bottom of the screen, click your computer.• To sync music from your device to your computer, at the bottom of the screen, click your device.

3. Click Music.4. Do any of the following:

Manually sync your pictures, videos, and documentsBy default, BlackBerry Link automatically syncs new pictures, videos, and documents between your computer and your BlackBerry device. If you turn off automatic sync, or you want to sync pictures, videos, and documents that were on your computer or device before you set up BlackBerry Link, you can manually sync your files.

You can sync individual pictures, videos, documents, or collections of files.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. Do one of the following:

• To sync files from your computer to your device, at the bottom of the screen, click your computer.• To sync files from your device to your computer, at the bottom of the screen, click your device.

3. Do one of the following:

Turn off automatic syncing for specific music, pictures, videos, and documentsYou can turn off automatic syncing for specific music, pictures, videos, documents, or collections of these files. If you turn off syncing, updates to the files won't sync between your computer and your BlackBerry device.

When you turn off syncing, the files are not deleted from your computer or your device.

Change your documents libraryYou can add or delete folders in your documents library.

I can't see the files in my librariesTry the following actions:

• Verify that you have music, picture, video, or document files in the libraries on your computer. If there are no files in the libraries, add supported files or add folders to your library.

• Verify that you are running iTunes version 10 or later and iPhoto '09 or later.• In BlackBerry Link, if you can't see songs from your music library, open iTunes. Try viewing your songs in BlackBerry

Link again.

Some files didn't syncTry the following actions:

• If you are trying to sync your music, pictures, videos, or documents between your computer and your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, you must connect your tablet to your computer using a USB cable.

• If you are trying to sync your music, pictures, videos, or documents over a Wi-Fi network, you must plug your BlackBerry device in to a power source, such as an electrical outlet or a computer.

• If you are trying to sync files that were on your computer or your device before you set up BlackBerry Link, manually sync the files. BlackBerry Link doesn't automatcially sync files that were on your computer or device before you set up BlackBerry Link.

• If you changed a file on both your device and your computer, the version of the file on your computer is the version that BlackBerry Link syncs. The version of the file on your device is overwritten by the version on your computer.

• If you have a media card in your device and you have turned on USB mass storage on your device, BlackBerry Link can't access the files on your device. For information about how to turn off the USB mass storage setting, tap the Help app on the home screen of your device.

• Verify that your device has enough available storage for your music, pictures, videos, and documents. Consider using a higher capacity media card for your device.

• Verify that your songs don't contain any digital rights management (DRM) technologies.• Verify that your files are in a supported format.• If your videos didn't sync and the video extension is supported, verify that your video or audio codecs are supported.

• On your device, in your Storage options, if there is a message to format your media card, disconnect your device from your computer and format the media card.

Note: When you format your media card, all the files on the media card are deleted.

I can't see my album artBlackBerry Link doesn't import iTunes album art if you are creating playlists, updating podcasts, or accessing the iTunes Store.

Try the following:

• Close any open iTunes dialog boxes.• Finish any iTunes tasks.

A folder on my computer isn't recognizedIf you are trying to sync picture, video, or document files between a specific folder on your computer and your BlackBerry device, the folder might appear dimmed in BlackBerry Link in the following situations:

• The folder on your computer is deleted.• The folder on your computer is renamed.• The folder on your computer is on a network drive or USB drive that is disconnected.

Try to correct the situation and sync again, or select another folder.

Updating your device software

About updating your device softwareYou might want to update your BlackBerry device software for any of the following reasons:

• To access the latest apps and features• To resolve a technical issue• Your wireless service provider requires that you update your device software

Data and settings on your device before you begin updating your software will be on your device when the software update is complete.

It could take up to an hour to update the device software. During that time, you can't disconnect your device from your computer.

Update your device softwareIf a new version of the device software is available for your BlackBerry device, it's listed in the Settings view.

Before you begin: To update your device software make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. At the bottom of the screen, click your device.3. Click the icon.4. In the Settings view, in the left pane, click Install Update.

Switching to a new device

About switching to a new deviceYou can use BlackBerry Link to transfer supported data and settings from your current BlackBerry device to a new device running BlackBerry 10 OS. You can transfer supported data to your new device from:

• A BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 or later• Another device running BlackBerry 10 OS

If you switch from a smartphone running BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 or later, you can transfer:

• Device settings• Phone history• Music, pictures, and videos stored on the built-in media storage• BBM contacts and groups (BBM 6.2 or earlier)• BBM conversations• Browser bookmarks• Text messages• Passwords• Wi-Fi profiles• Fonts• Saved searches• Personal contacts and calendar appointments that are not synced with an online source such as Microsoft Exchange,

Gmail, or Yahoo! Mail

Email accounts and unsupported applications aren't transferred to your new device. You can set up your email accounts on your new device and visit the BlackBerry World storefront to download applications that were not transferred to your new device.

If you switch from another device running BlackBerry 10 OS, you can transfer:

• Settings• Application data• Media• Work space data, depending on the options set by your administrator

Switch to a new deviceWhen you switch to a new BlackBerry device, BlackBerry Link backs up the data from your old device and transfers the data to your new device, adds your new device to BlackBerry Link, and checks the device software version installed on your new device. If a software update is available, BlackBerry Link prompts you to update your device software.

1. On your computer, open BlackBerry Link.2. Connect your old device to your computer using a USB cable.3. If required, type the password for your device. Click OK.4. Do one of the following:

• If you switch from a BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry Device Software, click Transfer Data. BlackBerry Link backs up all of your device data.

• If you switch from a device running BlackBerry 10 OS, at the bottom of the screen, click the icon Switch Devices. Click the picture of your device when it appears. If required, type the password for your device. Click OK.

5. If you switch from a device running BlackBerry 10 OS, do one of the following:

• To transfer all of your existing device data to your new device, click Transfer all supported data. Click Next. BlackBerry Link backs up all of your device data.

• To transfer only certain data to your new device, click Select data to transfer. Clear the checkbox beside the data that you don't want to transfer to your new device. Click Next. BlackBerry Link backs up your device data.

6. At the prompt, connect your new device to your computer using a USB cable and click the picture of your new device. Click Next.

7. If required, type the password for your device. Click OK.8. Type a display name for your new device.9. Do any of the following:

• If you don't want to automatically sync new media files between your device and your computer, clear the Sync new music, pictures, videos, and documents over Wi-Fi and USB connections checkbox.

10. Click Next.Your device data is transfered to your new device.

11. Click Finish.

After you transfer your device data to your new device:

• Move your media card (if you have one) from your old device to your new device.• Move your SIM card from your old device to your new device. If you switch from a BlackBerry smartphone running

BlackBerry 7.1 or earlier, contact your wireless service provider for a micro SIM card for your new device.• If you switch from a BlackBerry smartphone that is associated with the BlackBerry Internet Service or a BlackBerry

Enterprise Server, set up your personal or work email accounts on your new device. For more information about adding an email account, tap the Help app on the home screen of your device.

• After you confirm that all of your device data transferred successfully to your new device and you no longer need your old device, you can reset your old device to its default settings and delete all of the data from the device.

Restore your device to its factory default settingsIf you restore your BlackBerry device running BlackBerry 10 OS to its default settings, BlackBerry Link deletes all of the data and third-party applications from your device. Any IT policies that are applied to your device are also deleted. After you restore your device to its default settings, you can run the setup application on your device to set up the device again.

To restore your BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 or later to its default settings, you must use the BlackBerry Desktop Software. Or you can delete all of your device data using your smartphone. For more information about how to delete your device data, click the Help icon on the home screen of your smartphone.

Before you restore your device to its default settings and delete the data from your device, Research In Motion recommends that you back up your data so that you have a copy on your computer.

Note: You can't stop the process of restoring your device to its default settings after you start it. If you reset your device, the process continues after the device restarts.

Some of the data from my old device is not on my new deviceWhen you switch to a new BlackBerry device running BlackBerry 10 OS, the version of the device software on your old BlackBerry device determines the data that can be transferred to your new device. The transfer of some data might not be supported if you switch from a device running an older version of device software. Email accounts and unsupported applications aren't transferred to your new device.

Try any of the following:

• Add your personal email account on your new device, if you switch from a device that is associated with the BlackBerry Internet Service.

• Add a Microsoft ActiveSync email account on your new device, if you switch from a device that is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Contact your administrator for the required information.

• Open the BlackBerry Remember app on your new device to find your memos and tasks.• Open the BlackBerry World storefront to download apps that were not transferred to your new device.

LOSS OF BUSINESS INFORMATION, LOSS OF BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY, OR CORRUPTION OR LOSS OF DATA, FAILURES TO TRANSMIT OR RECEIVE ANY DATA, PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH ANY APPLICATIONS USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH RIM PRODUCTS OR SERVICES, DOWNTIME COSTS, LOSS OF THE USE OF RIM PRODUCTS OR SERVICES OR ANY PORTION THEREOF OR OF ANY AIRTIME SERVICES, COST OF SUBSTITUTE GOODS, COSTS OF COVER, FACILITIES OR SERVICES, COST OF CAPITAL, OR OTHER SIMILAR PECUNIARY LOSSES, WHETHER OR NOT SUCH DAMAGES WERE FORESEEN OR UNFORESEEN, AND EVEN IF RIM HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW IN YOUR JURISDICTION, RIM SHALL HAVE NO OTHER OBLIGATION, DUTY, OR LIABILITY WHATSOEVER IN CONTRACT, TORT, OR OTHERWISE TO YOU INCLUDING ANY LIABILITY FOR NEGLIGENCE OR STRICT LIABILITY.

THE LIMITATIONS, EXCLUSIONS, AND DISCLAIMERS HEREIN SHALL APPLY: (A) IRRESPECTIVE OF THE NATURE OF THE CAUSE OF ACTION, DEMAND, OR ACTION BY YOU INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO BREACH OF CONTRACT, NEGLIGENCE, TORT, STRICT LIABILITY OR ANY OTHER LEGAL THEORY AND SHALL SURVIVE A FUNDAMENTAL BREACH OR BREACHES OR THE FAILURE OF THE ESSENTIAL PURPOSE OF THIS AGREEMENT OR OF ANY REMEDY CONTAINED HEREIN; AND (B) TO RIM AND ITS AFFILIATED COMPANIES, THEIR SUCCESSORS, ASSIGNS, AGENTS, SUPPLIERS (INCLUDING AIRTIME SERVICE PROVIDERS), AUTHORIZED RIM DISTRIBUTORS (ALSO INCLUDING AIRTIME SERVICE PROVIDERS) AND THEIR RESPECTIVE DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, AND INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS.

IN ADDITION TO THE LIMITATIONS AND EXCLUSIONS SET OUT ABOVE, IN NO EVENT SHALL ANY DIRECTOR, EMPLOYEE, AGENT, DISTRIBUTOR, SUPPLIER, INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR OF RIM OR ANY AFFILIATES OF RIM HAVE ANY LIABILITY ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THE DOCUMENTATION.

Prior to subscribing for, installing, or using any Third Party Products and Services, it is your responsibility to ensure that your airtime service provider has agreed to support all of their features. Some airtime service providers might not offer Internet browsing functionality with a subscription to the BlackBerry® Internet Service. Check with your service provider for availability, roaming arrangements, service plans and features. Installation or use of Third Party Products and Services with RIM's products and services may require one or more patent, trademark, copyright, or other licenses in order to avoid infringement or violation of third party rights. You are solely responsible for determining whether to use Third Party Products and Services and if any third party licenses are required to do so. If required you are responsible for acquiring them. You should not install or use Third Party Products and Services until all necessary licenses have been acquired. Any Third Party Products and Services that are provided with RIM's products and services are provided as a convenience to you and are provided "AS IS" with no express or implied conditions, endorsements, guarantees, representations, or warranties of any kind by RIM and RIM assumes no liability whatsoever, in relation thereto. Your use of Third Party Products and Services shall be governed by and subject to you agreeing to the terms of separate licenses and other agreements applicable thereto with third parties, except to the extent expressly covered by a license or other agreement with RIM.

Certain features outlined in this documentation require a minimum version of BlackBerry Enterprise Server, BlackBerry Desktop Software, and/or BlackBerry Device Software.

The terms of use of any RIM product or service are set out in a separate license or other agreement with RIM applicable thereto.
