Black Walnut Grips Cut from an Old Trapdoor Rifle Stock Thirty years ago I bought a US Springfield Model 1873 trapdoor rifle made in 1874, two years before Custer was killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. My rifle was in excellent condition, except for the Black Walnut stock that was damaged. After searching for several years, I found another original stock of the same time period that I used to replace the damaged stock. For years, the old trapdoor rifle stock remained in the back of my bedroom closet. In 2017, I decided to make a one-piece Walnut grip for my 2nd Generation Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army (SAA) pistol. Instead of going to Lowes or Home Depot, I decided to use a piece of Black Walnut cut from the old trapdoor rifle stock. Information from the Springfield Research Service indicated this stock came from a rifle that was used by the US Army during the height of the Indian Wars in the last half of the 19th Century. By re-using this wood, I knew I would be touching a piece of American history each time I held my gun. Here is a photo of the Black Walnut grip that I made from the old Springfield Model 1873 trapdoor rifle stock used during the Indian Wars.
