CHAPTER DIRECTORS Woody & Jo Woodfill

I can't remember the last time I saw so many bikes out riding this time of the year but even though the temperatures have been nice, be careful since there is still a lot of cinders on the road especially at intersections. Last week I was making a left turn at one and what looked like dirt was a bunch of very fine cinders and was enough that my back tire slid a little and made my heart skip at least one beat and I think I sucked up a little of my seat, so be careful and be aware of the dangers.

Hopefully everyone remembered to set their clocks forward last night and didn't miss the gathering. I'm so happy to get that extra hour of light in the evening to be able to do things outside.

Don't forget to start collecting stuffed animals for the Bunny Run as we will be going to Memorial and York Hospitals along with Hoffman Homes and this year I've added Trinity Toy workshop and West Manhiem Police Department. These 2 new ones will have to be on another day as Trinity and the Police Department will not have anyone available on that day.

We have been very active the last 30 days by attending MD-H Spaghetti/ Bingo night with 6 people and then the first training day with some very good Rider Ed classes on Running mountains- hills and curves followed by Night Riding and then Team riding that 9 folks went to. The following weekend a great meet and eat with good food, better friends and great conversations. The next day a full class for the CRP First Aid class. Thank you Doug, for putting this class together, and thanks to everyone that participated in these events. Please take the time to look at the website and register for the events a few weeks before the event so we know how many people are going.

As you all sit there reading this Jo and I along with Mike and Shirley and 28 other GWRRA members are cruising in the Caribbean thinking of you and hoping you are having good weather to ride. Hopefully we will see a lot of you at the next meet and eat.

ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTOR Larry Staines

How about this weather, a couple of days in the 70's, back to the 30's, then the 70's again. What a tease. At least I did have the trike out one day and ran some errands.

Thanks to everyone that went to MD-H dinner. We got a point towards Roll for Dough.

Thank you to Mike Prince and John Steele for giving seminars at our training day. It's always good to go thru the classes to refresh your memory.

We had a very good turnout at New Freedom Restaurant for our Meet n Eat. A nasty storm blew through just about the time everyone was leaving home. We still had 19 hungry members show up.

Doug had a full house for his CPR/First Aid class. I hope everyone paid attention in case I need you.

Thank you to everyone who takes time out of their busy schedule to participate in our chapter events. It's what makes this such a great chapter.

RIDER EDUCATION NEWS Doug Motter, Chapter Educator

Hello

I want to thank everyone that attended the CPR/FA class that I presented. It is important that we keep ourselves updated with the new and old in training. We had a few members who were guests to see the training. I want to thank them also.

It seems that the interest is there for more training so we will work on that soon.

This month I want to talk about your first aid kits. You should be checking these kits twice a year. Once at the beginning, and again at the end of the riding season. If you let your kit in the bike all year it is a must. The weather changes have a lot to do with them. The temp change will affect your supplies inside the kit. So take a moment and check your kit.

Just a reminder to also replace the supplies you use. This way your kit keeps full and updated.

Remember, if you ride get seen, and have FUN getting there.

Hello to all. I need to start off by thanking all of you that sent cards and well wishes to my wife Christine. She really enjoyed all of the kind words. This has been a tough couple of weeks for us both. Hopefully by the time this is

printed she will be home. I need my laundry done! Haha, just kidding. This month there were no new members that joined the chapter. Just as a reminder that it is up to all of us as GWRRA members to not only enjoy all things GWRRA, but also spread the word to others what we are all about. You don't need a Goldwing, a CB, or years of riding experience. With riding season upon us there will be a lot of motorcycles out which means plenty of opportunities to engage in conversation. That's always a great opportunity to slide in a flyer. As always, if anyone has a change of address, telephone number or renewal information please feel free to send me an email or text with that information. If anyone knows of or sees anything that would be of interest to the Chapter, i.e. car/bike shows, parades, events, please feel free to contact me via email or phone call and I will do my best to make it happen. If you are reading this and you don't attend gatherings, I would like to extend an invitation for you to check a chapter gathering out. Usually on the 2nd Sunday of the month. If course the best way to stay connected is through the website. Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication.

Todd and Christine Fauth, MEC for PA-V

Hi Chapter V

Well another month gone and a new starting. I did a CPR/FA class this past month. While I was doing the class Cyndy was attending Chapter PA-K gathering. She had the pleasure in assisting their Chapter Educator in presenting Level 4's to Glenda and John Leib our District

Couple of the Year.

Cyndy also was at the last Gathering to share in the fun. It was great that her work schedule worked out for her to be there. We hope in the future we can attend other Chapters’ fun fair and gatherings. Also more of ours.

We are still here and having FUN

District Directors:

Well here goes another newsletter article. I don’t know where the months are going. It seems like you just get one newsletter done and it’s time to start another one. One thing nice is that I am sitting here with it being late

February typing the March article, looking out the window at the sun shining and the thermometer hovering in the mid 60-degree range. I had a boss that always said when spring comes in March, April gets jealous. I hope that isn’t the case for this upcoming spring. He never had any saying about when spring comes in February. I hope this isn’t an omen to a wet cold spring. We wanna ride.

Come the first of March we can start looking at the beginning of a busy spring and summer riding season. The weekend of March 11

th will have our district team hosting our

2017 Couple of the Year Retreat in Duncansville. I can guarantee this will be another great time put together by Jim, Diane, Barry and Rhonda along with all the Chapter Couples. We will let you know how much fun we had in the next newsletter. Hopefully we will see your chapter Couple at the retreat.

We are finalizing our plans for the District Team Meeting coming in late April. Hopefully we will see our Chapter Directors, MEC’s and Educators at the meeting this year. This year we have changed the location and it will be held in Altoona, PA. We moved it to later in the month hoping for a nice weekend without snow. You should have gotten an email about the meeting by now and we are awaiting your reply as to how many of your chapter staff will be attending. Again, this year we have a lot of information to pass on to the chapter leaders.

The team has been busy working on plans for the upcoming District Rally in State College in May. We are looking for a chapter to host an indoor game day Saturday afternoon in the hotel this year. If you think your chapter may have some interest in hosting some games like bingo, cornhole or any other group activities, please let us know. Our Chapter I has stepped up and volunteered to host the outdoor chapter games at the rally this year. We made plans with the hotel this year to have tables and chairs in the Atrium all weekend for us to use. This will give everyone somewhere to hang out and socialize. The District team is excited to host this year’s rally and look forward to having everyone there. More information will be coming soon.

Again, we are giving you a reminder to keep an eye on the district website for upcoming events. There are always chapter functions available for your entertainment. All Chapters East and West are two events that may draw your attention. If camping isn’t your thing, there are hotels in both locations for you to stay. Come and join in the fun. We have distributed the Region fundraiser tickets to our chapters. We have gotten a great response from everyone so far.

Andi and I often go to gatherings and talk about things going on in the district and hear someone say, man that sounds like fun, I wish I would have known about that. For years now we have been stressing to chapter leaders how important it is to get events posted on the website. And they now are doing that. The only problem is getting members to look there. The district team and I are amazed at how many members don’t know how to get to the District website. This is frustrating when we hear this.

There is so much information on the site. Information is available in Membership Enhancement, Rider Education, Leadership Training and everything in-between. I would fill many pages here telling you about everything that is on the website. Please take a minute and look at the district site. You can reach the site several ways. The address is http://www.gwrrapadist.org You can also open a search engine and do a search. Just type in gwrra pa district and that will take you to our site. Once you get to the site make it a favorite so you can look at it every now and again. Mike Ammerman does an outstanding job keeping the site up to date. He and I would appreciate you looking at it. Who knows maybe you will find some information you were looking for.

The Region tickets have been distributed to our chapters. We are getting a great response in chapters selling tickets. Keep up the great work. The region thanks you for your support in selling the tickets. Hopefully our PA chapters will come out winners and bring home some cash.

There have been questions from some of our chapters as to why the district has not had a fundraiser for 2017. I believe now is the time to answer this question. The main reason is because of the laws governing the Small Games of Chance license. For instance, we are not legally allowed to reimburse chapters a percentage of money for selling tickets. We understand some chapters depend on this income to fund their treasury. We are working on how to remedy this but have not yet come up with an answer as to how to legally proceed. Once we figure out how to legally give back to the chapters we will again be doing a district fundraiser.

Rick & Andi Riek Pennsylvania District Directors Website: http://www.gwrrapadist.org

Assistant District Directors:

Punxy Phil says six more weeks of winter. The weather man is calling for temps in the 40’s and high 50’s over the next few weeks, maybe Phil was wrong. Last Friday we rode almost all day. By Sunday it was snowing and cold. I spent that day sitting, all covered up with a blanket, reading about a shamrock tour in Snowshoe, West Virginia, and dreaming of taking that tour. Last year’s April issue of Road Runner also had articles about South Dakota, Wyoming, California, and Oregon. If you have never read this motorcycle touring magazine, you should give it a try. They feature a “shamrock tour” each month.

We just attended our chapter ride schedule meeting and hope to be able to join them on many rides this season. Diane and I suggest that you include events sponsored by other chapters this riding season into your schedule. What better way to have fun then to share time with those who have the same passion. Many chapters have great times planned for your participation., so join them.

It is also that time to plan what service your bike may need before the riding season starts. Do you need more safety chrome, lights or new tires for your Wing? How about new helmets and head sets, new rain gear? It is also time to think about upgrading your skill set by attending seminars on safety and leadership. Before you know it warm weather will be here and we will be riding again.

Jim and Diane Heffelfinger PA Assistant District Directors

Page 7: Black Rose Wings, Chapter PA Vgwrrapav.org/Portals/0/Documents/Newsletters/2017_03_MAR...Gold Wing Road Riders Assoc. Black Rose Wings, Chapter PA-V Hanover, PA * 2011, 2013, 2015

Assistant District Directors:

What have you been doing the past couple of weeks? The weather has been unbelievable. We keep checking the calendar to see if it is really February. Many of you have been out riding., We hope you are watching for potholes, anti-skid and other road hazards. I’m sure our weather has been making the snowbirds wonder why they left.

So, this raises the question; March will come in like a lion or a lamb? Have you ever wondered where this phrase originated? Many meteorologist use this term since March often has unusually weather with many highs and lows. Winter snow and cold are dwindling but often there is a snow storm in March. Spring is trying to make its appearance; there is sunshine and the days are warmer. The term of lion or lamb in March refers more to astrology. Leo the lion is in the night sky in the beginning of March and Aries the ram (lamb) is at the tail end of the month.

March also brings the Couple of the Year Retreat, March 11 – 12, being held at the Comfort Inn in Duncansville, PA. Our District Membership Enhancement Coordinator, Diane Heffelfinger and District COY Coordinators, Barry & Rhonda Blyler, have a great weekend of fellowship and FUN planned for our Chapter COY’s and Chapter Directors.

Chapter Directors make sure to ask your Chapter Educator and Membership Enhancement Coordinator to join you at the District Meeting in Altoona at the Juniata UMC on April 29

th

from 11 am to 5 pm. Lunch will be served and we are asking for $5 for each person attending. Please let our District Directors, Rick and An-di Riek know by April 1

st how many will

be attending from your chapter.

Roll for the Dough is in full swing. Many chapters have been visiting other chapters and having a good time. We hope your chapter has been participating in the visitation program. March is a great month to visit another chapter to collect some points.

Don’t forget to turn your clocks ahead for Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, March 12

th.

Remember to always ride safe.

Harold and Diane Jackson Your PA Assistant District Directors

Hello Everyone

The MD-H Spaghetti Dinner was on Feb. 18. The only ones who signed up were Dave & Debbie Sorrick. The gathering was on Feb. 12th, so afterwards Woody talked to a few members and we ended up with 4 more people, We had the Beards, Woody and Woody’s 2nd wife ( Shirley) . We received our point for Roll for Dough. We all had a good time and it’s great to see members from MD and PA Chapters that you haven’t seen all winter. We decided to stay for the night of bingo. I did win 1 game but unfortunately I had to share with another guest, well $15.00 is good. Woody, the Beard’s n I decided to make our own entertainment with bloopers.

I would like to congratulate MD-H as the MD Chapter of the Year 2016. Bruce also announced that Winterthing will be in Feb. 2018.
