Historic market towns and ancientwoodland, riverside settings and beautiful countryside, the county of Nottinghamshire has it all and much more.

Nottinghamshire is a county steeped in legend.Robin Hood is our most famous son and Sherwood Forest, his supposed dwelling, is now a 450 acre National Park. The woodland here is home to many veteran trees, most importantly the Major Oak, said to be the outlaw’s den.

Sherwood Forest, like much of the rest of thecounty of Nottinghamshire, is nestled amongstgently undulating hills in lush countryside; in short, this is the patchwork agricultural scenery that the British Isles are famous for.

The Dukeries to the North of the County was home to some of the richest estates in England leaving the legacy of a multitude of fine mansion houses. Welbeck, Thoresby, Rufford and Clumber Park were playgrounds for the super rich of the industrial revolution. Much of their wealth was based on coal mining which was a major industry in Nottinghamshire until the end of the 20th century.

Lord Byron, the literary great whose ancestral home was Nottinghamshire, sold his estate at Newstead in 1818 to assuage debt problems borne of his extravagant lifestyle. Like many of the Abbeys that once dominated the county, the medieval building is a romantic ruin adjoined to a mansion house set in beautiful grounds.

This rich heritage has given us a dynamic cultural present. Full of lively arts venues, busy marketplaces and traditional pubs, you can see how Nottinghamshire continues to provide

The county of Nottinghamshire: a rich heritage

creative inspiration. This is matched by a wealth of beautiful licensed venues which are approved to hold weddings and civil partnerships. Arrange your ceremony at the famous Sherwood Forest, the spectacular Rufford Abbey, grand Holme Pierrepont Hall, beautiful Newstead Abbey or one of our 70 plus hotels, halls or registration offices. See pages 27 to 44 for more information about venues.

So, the question has been popped and potential dates discussed, now you need to choose the right setting for the most important day of your life. What are the choices and where do you start? Look no further, because Nottinghamshire has venues to suit all tastes - from registration offices and hotels, to stately homes and sports grounds, as well as more unusual settings and locations.

Ceremony rooms at our register offices We have a variety of rooms to meet all requirements, whether it be for an enhanced ceremony tailored to your needs or a small, intimate, shorter ceremony.

Other venues in NottinghamshireCivil weddings and partnerships at approved premises have become increasingly popular over the years and the choice of licensed venues has never been more diverse. You could celebrate your union in a cosy pub, a Victorian pumping station, a splendid country house, Sherwood Forest or even a sports ground. Often venues offer receptions too, ideal for those who prefer not to travel after their ceremony.

Church weddings and blessingsA church wedding is for those who have religious commitments and wish to get married in the eyes of their God. Civil Partnerships cannot be formed in a church, but in some cases it may be possible to arrange a blessing in consultation with your congregation’s leader.

For a civil marriage or civil partnership, couples can have their ceremonyat any registration office or other venueapproved by the local authority inEngland or Wales. Nottinghamshire hasfour main registration offices for ceremonies and over 70 approved venues, so there is something to suit all tastes.

Full details of our approved premises are on our website at: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/registrars and are also available by phoning 0300 500 80 80.

Our registration offices are very different, ranging from traditional to ultra modern, so we advise that you view our rooms before booking.

Our staff are very happy for you to visit, please ring ahead to check rooms are free and that there is someone available to show you round.

All of our ceremony rooms are decorated to a high standard and benefit from induction loop systems and music playing facilities. Some of our offices offer free parking and garden areas for taking photographs.

The first step in the process of arranging your special day is to make a provisional booking for the date, time and location of your ceremony. In some cases you can book your ceremony, via the relevant registration office, up to two years in advance.

Provisional bookings for all ceremonies atapproved premises, and at certain timesat registration offices, will require a non refundable deposit.

Civil ceremonies

For ceremonies at approved venues, it is essential that the provisional booking is made with our registrars before you make any firm arrangements with the venue.

Since a registrar is legally required to attend, early discussion with the registration office is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment. Our dedicated staff understand how important your special day is to you and they will help you to create a unique and happy experience for you to treasure.

There are some beautiful outdoor venues in Nottinghamshire, including magical Sherwood Forest, stunning open parkland and intimate landscaped gardens.

Legislation requires that short legal aspects of the ceremony and the signing of the register need to be carried out inside the approved venue, but a ceremony can be conducted outside.

Outdoor ceremonies can create challenges – the main one usually being the British weather. Here are some tips for helping your outdoor event run smoothly:

• Talk to your registrar if you want to hold a ceremony outdoors.

• Check that your chosen venue holds outdoor ceremonies.

• Find out from your venue what the arrangements are if the ceremony has to be moved indoors on the day due to bad weather.

• Speak to your suppliers, such as your florist, musicians and photographer, so they can ensure everything runs just as smoothly outdoors.

• Think about footwear and consider wearing flatter shoes if you are walking across grass.

At, or around the provisional booking stage, you will have been advised to give legal notice of your intention to marry or form a civil partnership. Notice must be given at least 16 days in advance of your ceremony date, but can be given up to one year in advance. Once notice has been given, 15 full consecutive days must elapse before the ceremony can take place.

For example, if notice is given by both of you on 1st June, then your ceremony can take place on or after 17th June. Notice can only be given up to 12 months in advance of your ceremony date and must be given by each of you in the registration district in which you normally live. If you live in Nottinghamshire, you can give notice at any of our registration offices. Please phone 0300 500 80 80 for more information. Before notice can be given, you must have lived in a registration district in England or Wales for at least nine days immediately before.

If you both live in the same registration district you will usually, and ideally, give notice on the same day. If you live in different registration districts, you should give notice where you reside on dates as close together as possible.

All registration offices in Nottinghamshire operate an appointment system.

Before you can give notice of marriage or civil partnership you must meet certain basic legal requirements: you must not be in an existing marriage or civil partnership; you must not be closely related to each other; you must be over 16 (and provide written consent from parentsor guardians if under 18).

Legal preliminaries,giving notice

Important informationThere is a statutory fee to give notice. This is not a deposit on the ceremony fee. You will also be required to produce specific documents to prove identity, nationality and place of residence e.g. full passport, divorce papers. Where relevant, you will also need to produce evidence of change of name and termination of previous marriage or civil partnership. Documents will vary depending on individual circumstances so please be guided by advice from the office where notice is to be given. All documents must be originals.

Timing is crucialIt is important to remember that on popular dates our registration staff will be conducting several ceremonies on the same day. Therefore it is vital that you and your two witnesses, plus other guests, arrive in good time. If you arrivelate, your ceremony may have to be postponed, whereas if any of your guests are late the ceremony will start without them. You will both be interviewed by the registrar who will check the personal details to be recorded in the register. This will include the full name and last known occupation of your natural or legally adoptive father. A stepfather may be recorded in certain circumstances. For civil partnerships, you will be asked for your father’s and mother’s details.

The pre-ceremony interviews can be done separately, with one person being interviewed 15 minutes before the ceremony and the other 10 minutes before. Please discuss this with your registration office in advance.

WitnessesYour civil ceremony must be witnessed by twopeople who can speak and understand Englishand who are fully aware of the nature andmeaning of the ceremony. Conventionally, weask that a witness should be over the age of16. The registration service is not able toprovide witnesses for you - they must beYOUR witnesses and cannot be employees ofthe registration service.

Recording your special dayWe know that you will wish to look back onthis important day and relive your treasuredmemories. Therefore, we are happy for you torecord your special day. Please discuss this in advance with your registration office and with the Registrar on the day.

On the day

Remember...Our friendly and committed staff are here to guide you through the planning and legalities of your big day. We are always happy to answer queries, give support throughout the civil ceremony registration process and guide you through all you say and do.

We want to do everything we can to ensure your celebration is all you would wish for.

Planning your civil weddingor partnership

5. Choose a style or theme for your wedding in the early stages, as this will make choosing everything else much easier.

6. Delegate tasks to friends and family and let them get involved too. It can be a lot of fun and it will ease the workload for you.

7. Avoid family friction at all times. They can be involved and help, but make it clear that it is your day and you and your partner will always have the final say.

8. Plan your budget carefully. Think about the most important aspects of the day for you and your partner and plan bearing those in mind.

9. Go to wedding fayres. You will pick up lots of ideas and it is a much easier and cheaper way to collect contacts than visiting all suppliers individually.

10. Finally, remember the reasons why the two of you are doing this. It is very easy to let the preparations take over your life, so remember to take time out to enjoy life and be together.

Our top tips for organising the perfect civil ceremony.

1. Personal recommendations are the best way to find reliable suppliers. Ask friends that have married recently and also family members for indications. When choosing a supplier, do not be afraid to ask for references. Research suppliers - look at their style, professional qualifications, online recommendations. Do you gel with them - will they understand your style and help you get the most out of your day? Look at wedding websites, blogs and magazines.

2. Always confirm everything in writing after agreeing something with a supplier. Provide a copy to them as well, so they can refer to what has been agreed. The same applies when making payments. Always ask for a receipt and keep it safe, even if it was just for a small deposit.

3. Create a folder and keep everything about your ceremony in there: pictures from magazines, quotes from suppliers, brochures, business cards and any recommendations you receive. You will soon have an excellent set of contacts and ideas to choose from.

4. Book as early as possible. The best venues are always booked far in advance, so if you have your heart set on one, check for availability as soon as you can. Try to leave as little as possible to the last minute to avoid disappointment. Visit www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/registrars

The District of Bassetlaw is in the heart of thebeautiful countryside of ‘The Dukeries’ and as the name suggests, was once the playground of kings and dukes.

You will be presented with a commemorative certificate as a keepsake of your ceremony and may wish to pay for extra certificates for grandparents and other guests.

You can hold a ceremony at any of our main registration offices in the county and also at venues approved by the County Council.

Our list of approved venues is available atwww.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/registrars

Please contact us on 0300 500 80 80.

Please note: the ceremony has no legal status and may not be used to change a child’s name.

A naming ceremony is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the birth of a child, to welcome adopted children or children from previous relationships and make them feel part of your family. This happy occasion is a unique opportunity for everyone to feel involved as they promise love and support for the new arrival and their parents. Some parents also choose to have a naming ceremony for their existing children after they get married.

Each ceremony is tailored individually.

You will work closely with one of our celebrants, choosing options available to create your own special ceremony which your family will remember and treasure in the years that follow.

Any parent, legal guardian or person with legal responsibility for the child/children may arrange a ceremony. Parents do not have to be married to do so.

Each ceremony is divided into sections giving you the chance to create something personal and very special. Typically we recommend:

• Introduction and welcome

• Naming of child/children

• Parents promises

• Grandparents/supporting adults promises

• Readings and music (you can include religious references if you wish)

• Signing and presentation of certificate

• Closing words

You do not need to include all these in your ceremony, it is designed to reflect your wishes and be as simple or as complex as you wish.

A renewal of vows ceremony is a great opportunity for couples who are married or in a civil partnership to celebrate and renew their vows in a unique and personal way.

A favourite time to renew marriage and partnership vows is at the time of a special anniversary. Popular dates include 10th, 25th, 40th and 50th anniversaries, but it can be any anniversary that is special to you.

Some couples choose to marry or form a partnership abroad and on their return to this country they decide to hold a renewal of vows ceremony to share their celebrations with family and friends. Other couples decide to renew their vows straight after their marriage or civil ceremony outdoors.

And many people who are part of the Armed Forces decide to renew their vows when they return from overseas, particularly if their original marriage or civil ceremony was organised quickly due to work commitments.

It’s a happy occasion for you to celebrate the life you have shared, through good times and bad. It’s an expression of hope as you re-dedicate yourselves to each other for the future.

And it is a day filled with love as you gather the people you care for most to help you share your special day. It might also make the perfect gift for someone you love. After the ceremony, you will receive a certificate with our compliments to commemorate the occasion.

Renewal of vows

A ceremony is composed of a number of sections giving you the chance to create something personal and very special:

• Introduction and welcome

• Mention of children of the marriage

• Readings or music can be included at various points

• Renewal of vows/promises

• Exchange of new rings or re-dedication of original rings

• Presentation of certificate

• Closing words

We will enjoy planning your ceremony with you. Please phone 0300 500 80 80 for more information or to make an appointment.

What better way to commemorate a special occasion than with a unique personalised certificate?

Our commemorative certificates provide a lasting reminder of a treasured occasion and can be used to mark any occasion including:

• birth

• special birthday

• special anniversary

• wedding day

• civil partnership

• renewal of vows

• naming ceremony

• citizenship

• or any other special occasion you would like to commemorate.

The certificates are available to anyone regardless of where the event took place and would make an ideal gift or personal memento. There is a choice of two designs for your certificate. Both options are beautifully finished with gold gilt and display the Nottinghamshire County Council Crest. Certificates are enclosed within a gold A4 envelope.

If you are celebrating a naming ceremony or renewal of vows ceremony with us, you will receive a certificate with our compliments to commemorate the occasion.

Commemorative certificates

If you would like to be presented with a certificate at your wedding or civil partnership, you need to order your certificate in advance.

Please note: The certificates have no legal status and cannot be used for any legal purpose or as evidence of identity.

Please contact us on 0300 500 80 80 to order your commemorative certificate.

Citizenship of the United Kingdom is something we who are British born of British parents take for granted; indeed it is something very few of us ever think about at all. It is our birthright, our heritage. But for many people it is a prize, something to be worked towards and achieved and not to be undertaken lightly. Under the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002, all applicants aged 18 years and over who are finally accepted for naturalisation are required to attend a citizenship ceremony to complete the process.

During this ceremony you will swear or affirm your allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen and make a pledge of loyalty to the United Kingdom. In Nottinghamshire, a Registrar will host the ceremony, and where possible a local dignitary will be there to offer a warm welcome to the county. The dignitary will present you with your certificate of nationality and a keepsake medal.

After an application for British Citizenship has been approved by the Home Office, you will receive an invitation letter asking you to contact us to arrange to attend a ceremony. These ceremonies are usually held in groups and take place at four different venues around the county throughout the year and there are generally two each month.

Citizenship ceremoniesWe also offer you the chance to hold your own individual ceremony, which we can tailor to your wishes. An individual ceremony will also give you the opportunity to invite more guests to witness your celebration.

An additional fee is charged for this service.

The ceremony is the culmination of many hours of hard work and real achievement and we understand its importance to our new citizens. We hope to make it a truly enjoyable celebration and look forward to welcoming you to Nottinghamshire and the United Kingdom with a ceremony which everybody will enjoy and remember forever.

Please contact us on 0300 500 80 80 to find out more. For further information on how to apply for British Citizenship visit: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/britishcitizenship

Change of name deedIn the UK, anyone can change their name, perfectly legally, without drawing up a formal record. However, in order for the new name to be officially accepted, many organisations such as banks, building societies and the Passport Agency request some form of ‘proof’ of the name change, so an official ‘Change of Name Deed’ may be required.

We are pleased to provide a fast, efficient and professional Change of Name Deed Service to any British Citizen who is over the age of 18.

When someone dies it is a painful, emotional and distressing time. Family or close friends are often faced with difficult decisions about the funeral.

Every person is different and your choice may be influenced by many factors: cultural and religious traditions, personal preferences and the wishes of the deceased. Whilst the majority of people still prefer a religious service, many are moving towards a more personal ceremony and find that a civil funeral ceremony is a more appropriate choice for them to make.

We can help you to arrange a civil funeral to celebrate the life of a family member or friend.

A civil funeral is a dignified and formal ceremony, suitable for both cremations and burials. It is personalised to reflect the thoughts of the family and friends of the deceased and will be unique to that person. Not everyone wants the same type of funeral and a civil funeral ceremony can provide an opportunity to create, with the help and support of one of our trained celebrants, the most appropriate and meaningful ceremony for saying goodbye to a loved one.

A civil funeral ceremony can take place at any suitable venue, in agreement with the celebrant, with the exception of a religious building or church.

Our celebrants will give any support and guidance needed to ensure that your ceremony reflects the personality of the deceased and the wishes of the family.

Civil funeralsDuring this discussion, any favourite music or readings can be incorporated. You may also like to consider if family members or friends would like to take part in the ceremony. You may wish to include items with religious references such as a prayer or favourite hymn.

You will also be asked to provide as much information as possible about the deceased. The celebrant will then create a tribute to them which celebrates their life, and which will reflect the express wishes of the family.

Please contact us on 0300 500 80 80.
