Today is Scout Sunday in the United States, a day when we recognize the youth who are being and have been formed by the scouting move-ment. I was formed through this organization as a youth and look back with gratitude for what I received from outstanding leaders and peers in

terms of my values, work ethic, and self-esteem. We have several troops affiliated with the parish. If our youth are looking for the types of things that I received in my time with the Scouts, I rec-ommend they check out one of our troops. If their parents or other adults are interested in instilling these values in our youth, I recom-mend they consider offering their time and talents to our troops. If you know a scout, please thanks him or her for their commitment to high values and service to others.Lent will begin on Ash Wednesday, February 17. We will have four services over the course of the day. While this day is not a holy day of obligation, many desire to begin their Lenten journey to Easter by coming to receive ashes. Our first service will be at 7:00am. It will be a shorter service, without the reception of Holy Communion, in order that those who need to go to work may get to a service with-out being late for work. The other three services will be full Masses with the reception of Holy Communion a part of the liturgy. One will be the weekly School Mass which will be closed to the public in keeping with our COVID-19 safety protocols. The other two Masses will be at 12:30pm (to work around the dismissal times of our pre-school children who use the same walkway from their classes as those coming to/leaving Mass) and 7:00pm. The 10:00am School Mass and the 7:00pm Mass will be livestreamed for those who prefer to participate virtually in Ash Wednesday liturgies. Ashes will be distributed at all four liturgies but the manner will be different this year. For those electing to receive them, they will be distributed in a manner more common outside the United States but part of our tradition: by sprinkling them lightly on the top of one’s head. This is how the Pope receives ashes every year. This manner of distribution is recommended by the Vatican to eliminate personal contact between the distributor and recipient of ashes and subsequent contact with others. If you are uncomfortable having a few ashes sprinkled on your head, please note that the reception of ashes is entirely optional.Fr. Jairo has been notified that Senator Tillis’ request for an emer-gency appointment has been approved by the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá Colombia. He has been given an appointment for Monday, February 8, to complete the last steps to have his passport updat-ed with his new visa. This is great news. Join me in praying that the appointment goes without a hitch and he is able to obtain his revised passport very soon after the appointment.

Know Believe and LiveTo Know: A lifelong journey of growth in our

knowledge of the Christian faith.

To Believe: A lifelong journey of growth in our assent and acceptance of what we teach at the level of faith.

To Live: A lifelong journey of understanding how we make this a part of our life.

Over the next several weeks we will be recording the 10 modules of Mon-signor Clay’s Know Believe and Live presentation. A 75-minute overview video will be available for parishioners in the beginning of Lent to virtually watch at home or in their existing ministry groups. Parishioners from our community who have already experienced the video will be sharing their response to how it resonated with their life. This week we hear from Julio de la Rosa, a long-time parishioners of St. Francis.

Julio de la RosaWe hope that as you listen to this witness from Julio this weekend and from another member from our community on February 13/14. Our hope is that you will be inspired to watch/experience the 75-minute overview video and ultimately participate in the entire Know Believe and Live series later this year.

The 2021 Bishop’s Annual Appeal of the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh is titled: One Family In Christ, Who Prays, Serves, and Shares in Eastern North Carolina. Everyone should have received or will be receiving information from the Diocese of Raleigh with the ways in which you can support this year’s campaign. Over the next couple of weeks we will be reminding everyone about the good work of Bishop’s Annual Appeal, how it helps so many and the ways in which you can contribute both financially and most importantly through prayer. A great example of how the BAA benefits our family here at St. Francis is exampled in the very presence of Father Jairo. He is here as a result of the generous support of the BAA and we humbly invite you to continue your support of this important campaign. The weekend of February 13/14 we will be sharing an original video during mass that was created for this year’s BAA. The video will feature Father Jairo and the ways in which his journey to us was aided by the generous support of the BAA. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal in the Diocese of Raleigh truly does the work of Christ. This is the one time of the year that we are called to step out of our parishes and serve the Universal Church across the Eastern half of North Carolina. The BAA provides critical funding for a wide range of ministries, including Semi-narians and Vocations, Communications, Marriage and Family, Catholic Charities, Catholic Education and many more.

Why Catholic Education?

This past week, as you may have known from Mrs. Hobler’s and my talks at Mass last week, we celebrated national Cath-olic School’s Week! This was a week where we were privileged to recognize the benefit we receive as Catholic educators from the tremendous support and collaboration of enthusiastic parents, who choose to send their children to our schools because they know a faith-based environment is where they want their children to grow up. Our faculty and staff have the profession-al, and many have the personal experi-ence with their own children, to know that a Catholic education at TFS gives our students the solid academic foundation for success, while building in them a commitment to service to others, and a confident sense of self that grounds them as they enter adulthood. We are here at TFS because of our Faith, and it be-comes evident every day as we embrace the enthusiasm and joy that our students bring to our campus. The students are

the essential part of what we do at The Franciscan School and they bring a dynamic and enthusiastic spirit to all we do each day! Even in this most difficult of years, our faith lifts and sustains our community, our families, and, most importantly, our students who take advantage of the opportunity to immerse themselves in the exceptional education offered here at The Franciscan School. We build good, strong and faithful people; we do it through excellence in education, through the faith established in the Catholic tra-dition we embrace at TFS, and through a strong sense of duty to others that is required of those who serve as God’s hands and feet on Earth. We are grateful to all of our support-ive families, and to the entire Catholic Community of St. Francis, for your role in creating this outstanding education ministry. Through your support, you allow the students to serve God through their education and our faculty and staff to do

the same through their vocations. Why is a Catholic education a wise choice at TFS? For all the reasons above and more. Our admissions process for the 2021-22 school year at The Franciscan School has started! We would love to tell you more about all that a Catholic education can provide for your student. Please watch our video here, which features our faculty and parents, and a special guest appearance from Father Jim, on what we have to offer at TFS! Please join us for one of our upcoming virtual information sessions to learn more on how we can support your family’s goals for your child through the love and support provided by our TFS family.

Education MinistriesHeidi Hobler, Director St. Francis of Assisi Preschool

We had such fun this past week celebrating Catholic Schools Week! The preschoolers participated in spirit days and projects that not only celebrated our school, but also demonstrated our oneness in faith. We began the week with a spirit day celebrating our school. All of our stu-dents and staff were able to celebrate our school by wearing our playground t-shirts. They marked the day that Msgr. Clay blessed our playground. This occurred on the feast day of St. Mari-anne Cope to whom the playground was dedicated. St. Marianne was the last American Franciscan to be canonized a saint. She provided great care to young children in Hawaii and those affected by Hansen’s Disease or leprosy. Much like

“One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and father of all….” (Ephesians 4)

St. Marianne, we as Catholic educators work pass to pass on our faith, care, and Catholic teachings to our children.Although our 4 and 5-year old students couldn’t be physically present with the 4th grade students from The Franciscan School at daily mass this past Wednes-day, they still were present in spirit. Each preschool class also decorated a pre-cut puzzle piece. Each piece then fit together to form one big poster celebrating our school and faith. Part of a Catholic education involves putting our faith into action. The children did this by not only collecting some of our favorite books to share with other children through the Wake Up & Read program but also in decorating notes for Caring Connections here in our parish.

Red, white, and blue were the colors that we wore to recognize our nation and remember that we are all one people, one people created in the image of God. This seems particularly important at this time in our country’s history. This past week was a nice reminder of what our Catholic schools have to offer. It was a beautiful reminder that in big and small ways all that we do and say should always be with through the lens of our faith and by keeping God’s message of love in the forefront. Registration for the 21-22 school year is NOW underway! To learn how to join our amazing preschool, please visit our website at: preschoolatstfrancis.com or contact Shelley Freeman at [email protected].

Event 3Course

Faith & Racial Equity: Exploring Power & Privilege

Begins the week of April 12.

Faith and Racial Equity: Exploring Power and Privilege is an eight week course that will be offered via Zoom on Monday evenings and Tuesday mornings beginning April 12/13. Rooted in faith, prayer and Scripture it awakens groups to the economic systems, public policies, cultural norms, and hidden biases that empower some and oppress others. It introduces a framework for understanding and recognizing racial disparities in power and privilege and helps participants explore how faith should inform their response to learning, as well as discern action steps for working toward racial equity in their own communities.

Faith and Racial Equity is not for the faint of heart. It is designed for participants who are willing to wrestle with hard questions and take an honest look at their own attitudes, assumptions, and choices. However, through spiritual grounding and community-building, participants find support and belonging throughout their journey to personal transformation and social action.Sign up here if are interested or would like to learn more: www.bit.ly/SFA-FRE2021

Event 4 DemonstrationCreedmoor Rd.Tuesday Feb 16, 4:00 – 5:30 pm

Come stand in solidarity and be a prophetic witness for our brothers and sisters of color on Tuesday Feb. 16 4:00 – 5:30 pm. We will meet at Benson United Methodist Church 4706 Creedmoor Rd, Raleigh, NC 27612. Sign up here and more information will be sent to you: www.bit.ly/BHM-demonstration2021 We will begin in prayer, wear masks and safely social dis-tance outside.Scripture and the principle of solidarity within Catholic Social Teaching tells us that we are one human family, despite our racial differences, united to one another through Christ. And that solidarity is not a feeling of vague com-passion or shallow distress at the misfortunes of so many people. On the contrary, it is a firm and persevering determi-nation to commit oneself to the good of all people.

• The doors to the rest of the Community Center will remain locked.

“Scouting is a values-based program with the values of good conduct, respect for others, and honesty. Scouts learn skills that will last a lifetime, including basic outdoor skills, first aid, citizenship skills, leadership skills, and how to get along with others.” - BSA website In the past around this same weekend every year at the 9:30 and 11:30 masses you would look around at mass and see pews full of Scouts (Cubs & Scouts BSA Boys and Girls) in their uniforms. You’d also see Scouts assisting with normal duties like handing out programs, helping at the collection and com-munion as well as carrying the Gifts down. Well unfortunately, like many other things this year due to COVID we have had to adapt a little and the Scouts instead had a small video played prior to 9:30am Mass. For over twenty years, our scouting programs support hundreds of youth each year and those same youth provide service to our community each year through projects as well as individual award efforts. These Scout groups have done a little bit of everything includ-ing: cleaning up trash; making meals and cards for Feed the Need; building structures and equipment for the preschool and TFS; preparing our environment for special liturgies; serving hospitality after mass; participating in Brown Bag Ministry; and so much more. We are lucky here at St. Francis of Assisi to have a Co-ed Cub Scout Pack, which is for Kindergarteners through 5th Graders as well as Scouts BSA Boy and Girl troops which is for ages 11-17. If you have, a child interested in Scouts BSA please Visit our webpage for contact information for the Pack as well as both Troops at https://www.stfrancisraleigh.org/community-or-ganizations/.

Lent starts February 17. Greener Lent is a beautiful way to expand your traditional days of abstinence and fasting during this holy season by giving up consumption of meat and becoming more aware of our eating habits as they relate to our care of the planet and the poor. There are many parishes in the Diocese of Raleigh participating in this Lent program as we seek to live out our call to care for God’s creation, our “common home,” as Pope Francis says. To find more info online about Greener Lent and to sign-up to participate during Lent, go directly to www.greenerlent.org. You can also contact our St. Francis Creation Care Ministry at [email protected].

Before the holidays, each family received a letter from Monsignor Clay requesting your support in 2021 through your time, talent, and/or treasure. Partnered with that letter was the 2021 *Stewardship Commitment Form. If you have not had the opportunity to discuss and pray about how Christ calls us to be disciples, please take a moment to do so now. It is so important to fill out the form and return it to the parish as soon as possible. As Monsignor Clay’s letter articulates: “this is not a binding contract but a good faith pledge to do your best to support the parish in the way(s) that is/are possible for each member of your household.” The *Stewardship Commitment Form provides a way to think about and then share how you will be a passionate stew-ard here at St. Francis. If you prefer to complete the Stewardship Commitment Form online, you can do that now by clicking here. Thank you for supporting our parish home. On a personal note, I pray every day for our entire St. Francis family and I am so very grateful for your belief in Stewardship as a Way To Life. I hope that the new year brings much needed healing and peace to every member of this big beautiful St. Francis family.

If you have any questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact me. [email protected] or by calling (919) 847-8205x222.

*The parish Stewardship Commitment form is not the form to use for the Fran-ciscan School or the St. Francis of Assisi Preschool stewardship rate application process. That is a separate form and can be found on the school website.

The St Vincent de Paul Conference is in need of a Story Teller? We are in need of volunteers who from their own home attend a SVdP Meeting via Zoom. The Story Teller would then select two cases that were discussed during the meeting, on a Neighbor’s difficulties and how we help them, of which to write stories for the bulletin. Anyone from a Teen on up who likes to write stories can apply. It is important to keep parishioners informed. If interested in helping contact Cathy Smith at [email protected].

“How do the sciences hint at God’s existence?”

You are so welcome to join the Faith and Science Forum as we begin discussing a new book, How Science Points to God by Dr. Gerard Verschuuren, on Wednesday March 3rd. The forum meets twice monthly to share information and presentations, to discuss books, to ask questions, and to support one another in our mutual discovery and appreciation of our common home. We affirm with Pope Francis in Laudato Si that the mystery of nature reveals the divine, that the Spirit is active in creation, that each creature has its own purpose, and that the universe unfolds in God who fills it completely. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Ron Monti at 919-841-0807, [email protected], or Tracy Hurley at 828-773-3152, [email protected].
