history: what ‘black people’ have done.

Celebrated once a year in February: USA, Canada and UK.

Activity

Think of 5 famous black American people.

Write their profession.

Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King JR, Malcom X, Babe Ruth, etc.

1. Origins of inequality White-Black: Black slaves

2. Abolition of slavery: It was put into law in

1862 and 1863 but was not complete until 185 when the 13th Amendment was ratified.

About four million (4,000,000) slaves were freed.

I freed most slaves in the Southern States.

Abraham Lincoln

He was the president responsible for freeing the slaves.

He put the Emancipation Proclamation into law

Fredrick Douglas Abolitionist=A person who

fights against slavery "I would unite with anybody

He was born in 1818 and died in 1895

He was well educated and wrote books about the bad situation of African Americans.

Malcolm X 1925-1965 Malcolm promoted

black pride and black power.

He was like Martin Luther King Jr. but not about peaceful protest.

He criticized whites for the bad treatment of Blacks.

He was assassinated while giving a speech.

Rosa Parks

1913-2005 She is known for

refusing to give her seat to a white man on a bus.

This caused the Montgomery Bus Boycott and it lasted a year.
