What is Black Friday?

In 2016 the UK,

£1.27 Billion was spent on the day.

Black Friday is the fourth Friday of the month within November, it follows the American Thanksgiving Day, and is regarded as the beginning of the American Christmas shopping season since 1952. Although Black Friday did not really pick up real speed until the early 2000s.

Black Friday is now the biggest sales phenomenon of the year. What started out as a one day sales frenzy in America, has now grown into a gigantic sales period, and also spread across the pond to become the biggest and best time of year for UK retailers.

Black Friday as well as starting in America, predominantly started in the shops. However this has now been joined by the might of online retailers and sales.

Don’t forget Cyber MondayCyber Monday is the Monday following Black Friday, which was predominately purely online sales. This extra day led to retailers extending their sales over the weekend to the Monday, making their sales last for four days - making these four days the biggest and busiest days in the retail calendar.

Online shopping Black Friday really picked up speed with the introduction of online shopping, no longer did customers have to rummage around to find the bargains in the shops, but customers could shop from the comfort and convenience of their home.
