A Message from Doug Egly, General Manager

Employee of the QuarterDonald Kosco

Welcome & Congratulations

Chef Zack Klemm

Dear Member: We are in the middle of the busiest time of the year for the club. Our Couples’ Member-Guest tournament is quickly approaching and it will be another terrific event this year. Adidas will again be our sponsor and they will be rolling out the red carpet more than ever before. Please see our Golf Shop staff to get signed up. We also have a number of demo days coming up on the range, so please make sure to read your member emails to know which companies will be coming to Black Diamond. It is a terrific way to test the latest equipment and find the perfect driver, irons or putter. I would like to take some time to welcome our new executive chef, Zack Klemm. He joined us last month and has already won over the members

with his new dishes and menu. Zack is a true professional and is a wonderful addition to our team. As Jay mentions in his column, we are battling both gophers and mole crickets. Each of these pests presents unique problems and potential damage to the course. We have an aggressive plan to eliminate both of these problems as quickly as possible. Jay’s team is also planning the spring/early summer agronomy plan to keep the courses in pristine shape. We have several big events coming up in the next few weeks. I look forward to seeing you on the course and in the Clubhouse. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions on how we can create more member delight!

The holiday hangovers appear to have waned as we move into March and a calendar chock full of enough golf events to satisfy even the most ardent golf-aholic! Talk around the Golf Shop of holiday parties’, visiting family and New Year’s resolutions has transformed into who has the hottest driver, which team you are playing for in the “Rider Cup” and how many holes you can get in before the sun sets.

I sometimes sound like a broken record reciting the schedule of golf events over and over but I think it is important that we not miss anyone who would enjoy participating; especially given the amount of effort that goes into some of the “biggies.” The Member-Guest events coming up are not just a chance to play in an organized competition but also an opportunity to inviteyour friends to participate in the best the club has to offer. From committees to captains, restaurant staff to tournament prize vendors and Golf Shop staff to grounds maintenance; there are a lot of details that have to be coordinated. When all comes together it is one of the things I enjoy most about my job. So double check the event schedule, check with the golf staff if you need any details, check with your friends and get signed up! Now, if we could just control the weather!

page 3

If it’s the latest and greatest golf equipment you are after, stop by the Golf Shop and check out the lineup of demo clubs we have available. The RBZ and R11s by Taylor Made have certainly created a stir, along with the latest offerings from Titleist, Ping, Callaway and Nike. Mizuno will be here on Thursday March 22nd for a demo day with their complete line for you to test as well. And don’t forget a new driver may give you the extra yardage you crave but what about your putting? We have an excellent selection of putters including “belly putters” from Cleveland, Taylor Made, Nike and Odyssey. If you haven’t tried a belly putter yet and you’re curious, take one of ours out and discover what all the fuss is about.

By the way, Daylight Saving Time begins March 11th. Sunset will move to 7:36pm, giving us another precious hour for golf ! Now get out there and play!

From the Director of Golf — Andrea Knox

Since Black Diamond Foundation (BDF) was established, it has funded scholarships at Withlacoochee Technical Institute (WTI) for Citrus County residents. WTI offers over 19 different technical programs, including air conditioning, practical nursing, computer technology, law enforcement and commercial foods. Chef Ben DeFazio, a graduate of WTI’s commercial foods program, was Black Diamond’s 2010 Associate of the Year. In 2011, the Foundation gave WTI $20,000 for scholarships for students who qualify for financial aid. Students selected receive $1000 per semester. Included in the scholarship money is $5000 to be used to train two Citrus County residents going into WTI’s Criminal Justice Academy. BDF is gratified that we are helping educate Citrus County citizens for jobs that are available in our local communities. Students graduating from the nursing program have 100% job placement. The Foundation also donated $10,000 to WTI to help build the Citrus County Public Safety Training Center - a specialized police training facility on campus, available for training officers throughout the State and Nation. This unique facility opened in December 2011, and was profiled in Citrus County Chronicle and Bay News 9. This year, 15 students are studying at WTI, thanks to BDF scholarships. Please applaud their achievements as you read about five of those recipients:

- Norman is currently in the Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration class. He is 56 years old and has returned to school after being laid off as an engineer for Hilton Hotel in Ocala.- John is in the Automotive Service Tech Program after being laid off three years ago. He is currently living in his mother’s garage until he can complete the program and find a job. John had perfect attendance all last year.- Melissa is the only female in the welding program. She is on track to finish in May and maintains excellent attendance despite the fact that her only transportation is her motorcycle, which she rides to and from Crystal River every day.- Vivian is an excellent student in the most demanding program, Practical Nursing. She is a single mother who will be finishing the program in June with the intent of providing a better life for herself and her children. She cried when she found out she was a scholarship recipient.- Jeremy is in the Computer Systems Technology class and rides his bike eight miles to and from school each day, in order to save money.

All contributors to the Foundation can be proud that we are helping the residents of Citrus County better their lives.

You make a difference in Citrus County.

BLACK DIAMOND INVESTMENT CLUB

Black Diamond Investment Club Contest Finalists, left to right:Kevin Conway, Pam Vlcko, Champion Kay Funkhouser,

Steve Johnson, and Pat Bentley.

The Black Diamond Investment Club announced the Winners of their 2011 Market Forecasting Contest. The results were:

First Place: Kay FunkhouserSecond Place: Pam Vlcko

Third Place: Bill Bristol

In January 2011, the Black Diamond Investment Club (BDIC) members put their market forecasting skills to the test. Each member forecasted what the end-of-year numbers would be on the following indices: DOW, S&P 500, NASDAQ, OIL, GOLD, 3 month Treasury Bill, 10 year Treasury Note and the Prime Rate. A putt-off was used to break the tie for third place. Steve Johnson, putting for Bill Bristol, out-putted Kevin Conway, Marie Salvio (Pam Vlcko filling in) and Pat Bentley. Kay also won the Market Forecasting Contest in 2009. An annual contribution to the Black Diamond Foundation was made with the contest winnings and some of the trading profits from the Club. Since inception in 2002, the Club has outperformed its Benchmark Blended Index. The Club has openings for new members. The Club meets in the Boardroom at 4:30 each 3rd Wednesday. No investment or forecasting experience necessary. Anyone interested in joining the Club can contact Kevin Conway, any Black Diamond Investment Club member, or attend any of the meetings.

Elections for 2012 were held with the following results:

President: Pat BentleyCo-Vice Presidents: Pam Vlcko and Stephanie Ward

Treasurer: Steve JohnsonSecretary: Les Bell

I typically use this space to discuss the latest agronomy practices and how my team fights various weather patterns, turf disease and keeps apprised of the latest in fertilizers. This

month I would like to focus on another challenge that we face on a daily basis.

You may have noticed that several small areas on a few tee boxes and fairways have recently been dug up. The purpose of this is to repair holes in our irrigation lines caused by gophers and moles who have been chewing on them. This results in sprinkler heads randomly popping up and staying on. So, contrary to popular belief, we are not randomly watering the golf course at inopportune times. Just like the movie Caddyshack, we are trying to eradicate the vermin, albeit without the explosive squirrels and rabbits. Instead, our “Carl Spackler” character is using mechanical traps as opposed to explosives. These traps can be seen throughout the golf courses and will not affect play or cause injuries to golfers.

The traps can be identified by a small piece of PVC pipe and a flag. We do apologize for the unsightly piles of dirt to fix the broken irrigation lines. unfortunately, I expect more lines will be damaged before we “get rid of the gophers.”

They are not as cute as the movie leads you to believe, and it can be very frustrating fixing one hydraulic tube only to find another one cut the next day. “In the immortal words of Jean Paul Sartre, “Au revoir, gopher.” - Carl Spackler

Reading & Discussion Group Henrietta Lacks is known in the medical community as HeLa. In 1951 cancer cells were taken from her body without her knowledge or consent. These cells became an important medical tool helping scientists discover cures for polio, cloning, and gene mapping etc. These immortal cells grown in culture are still alive and in use today earning millions of dollars even as Henrietta herself remained unknown and in an unmarked grave. In The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Rebecca Skloot brings to life the true story of Henrietta and her family. On March 22 at 4 pm in the boardroom, the book club will discuss this book and the questions: Who is Henrietta Lacks? How did she live and die? Did her family know she had become in some sense immortal? Who should benefit? For this month only the meeting date of the book club has been changed from the third Thursday of the month to the fourth Thursday. We will be meeting on Thursday, March 22 at 4 pm. Ideas and suggestions for future books are always welcome. For more information contact Faeth Houle.
