African culture came to Brazil with the enslaved people brought from Africa during the long period that lasted the transatlantic slave trade. The cultural diversity of Africa is reflected in the diversity of slaves belonging to different ethnic groups who spoke languages and brought different traditions

Africans have contributed to Brazilian culture in a myriad of ways: dance, music, religion, food and language. 

This influence is evident in much of the country; in some states, such as Bahia, Maranhão, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul the African-Brazilian culture is particularly outstanding because of migration of slaves.

The influence of African culture is also evident in the regional cuisine, especially in Bahia, where palm oil was introduced, the African palm which is extracted para palm oil. This oil is used in various dishes of African influence as vatapa, the pigweed and acarajé.

In African culture music contributed to the rhythms that are the basis of much of Brazilian popular music. colonial genres of African influence, as Lundu, finished giving rise to the rhythmic base of the Gherkin, Samba, Choro, Bossa Nova and other current musical genres.
