As per legend, Pandya king Harikesari Parakkirama wanted to
construct a temple for Hindu god Shiva at Tenkasi and went
to Kashi to bring a lingam (an iconic representation of Shiva). While
returning to his palace with the prized lingam, he rested under the
grove of a vilva tree, the favourite tree of Shiva. When the cow
carrying the lingam refused to move from the point, the king realised
that the wishes of Shiva were different from his own, and he placed
the lingam in the place where the cow halted. Thus, this place got its
name. This Town was nicknamed “Mini Japan” by Jawaharlal Nehru
and produces about 70% of the country’s produce of a particular
product and also 30% of the total ‘diaries’ produced in India giving
rise to an emergent printing industry. Which town am I talking about??

The literal meaning of this term is “to chop”. A symbol was
used for it between the 16th century and the 18th century.
The symbol consisted of the letters "Р" (rotated 90° counter-
clockwise) and "У" (written on top of it). The symbol was
placed over the amount number it belonged to. This symbol,
however, fell into disuse during the 19th century and
onward. In December 2013, the official symbol of this
