Olympus has Fallen... apologies, White House Down is the latest movie to crash out of Hollywood which involves the White House being blown up and the president being taken hostage. Filling and Healthy Vegetable CurryWhy not try this surprisingly low fat, meat free version of a traditional Indian meal, made with a mixture of healthy fresh vegetables.

Prep time: 20 min Cook time: 45 min Other time: 0 min Serves: 4

Ingredients5 sprays calorie controlled cooking spray1 large, finely chopped onion2 crushed garlic cloves1 tablespoon grated ginger root2 level tablespoons curry powder450g butternut squash, peeled and chopped1 portion cauliflower, broken into florets1 medium, sliced courgette1 medium, chopped red pepper125g green beans, sliced800g canned tomatoes, chopped1 stock cube, made up to 450ml as per packet instructions2 tablespoons fresh, chopped coriander1/2 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon black pepper, to taste

1. Mist a large saucepan with spray cooking oil. Sauté onion, garlic and ginger until softened, but not browned, for about 3-4 minutes.

2. Add curry powder and stir well, then add all the vegetables, canned tomatoes, stock and most of the coriander. Heat until boiling. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 45 minutes, or until vegetables are tender.

3. Check seasoning, adding salt and pepper to taste.4. Serve and garnish with coriander.

1. Heat a non stick frying pan, mist with the cooking spray, add the bacon and fry for 5 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside.

2. Mist pan again with cooking spray, add the onion and cook for 7-8mins.

3. Add the garlic and cook for 2 minutes. Add the peppers and courgette and cook for 10 minutes. Add the butter beans and sweetcorn and cook for 5 minutes.

4. Season to taste, remove from the heat and stir in the remaining ingredients. Serve between 4 bowls, topped with the bacon and a dash of Tabasco Sauce, if using.

Everybody knows that playing is fun. Have any doubts? All you need to do is watch how exuberant, carefree and energized children are when they’re engaged in an activity and having a good time. It has now been proven that there are other benefits to active play besides just having a good time. Studies have shown that it’s also a major factor in the appropriate social, emotional, mental and physical development of children. This theory dates back to such noted psychologists as Sigmund Freud, and it continues to be supported by current child development experts.

At Mister Twister’s, we strongly believe in the value of active play and keep that in mind when we design our play area systems. When children are engaged in play, they’re presented with certain situations, interactions and challenges. As they develop competencies in these areas, they’re honing the same social, mental and physical skills they’ll need in other aspects of life. Freud said that play is a vehicle for children to master situations safely, and it helps children engage in ‘wish fulfilment’ while mastering their world. Erik Erikson, another noted Psychologist, stated that as a child moves through specific stages of development, play creates life-like situations in which the child can “practice” understanding and acting on the choices each situation presents. These theories still are considered true today. In fact, many child development experts believe that children who don’t engage in regular active play may suffer as adults. They say that a child who doesn’t play enough can grow up to become an adult poorly equipped to perform well mentally, physically and socially. Contrary to what many parents believe, play is not the opposite of work, or something children do after the work is done; although play is fun, it has a definite purpose: to help the child successfully develop valuable skills such as :- Imagination and Creativity - Abstract Thinking - Empathy and the Ability to Cooperate - Social, Language and Mental Skills - Learning to Solve Problems - Confidence and Self Esteem.

Another benefit of active play that’s not readily available in some other activities is the opportunity for children to use their imagination. Organized sports, gym class, or even traditional school-yard playgrounds all encourage predictable forms of play and interaction, often following rules. Volkswagen Golf GTI

The car I have had the pleasure in driving this month is the Golf GTi courtesy of Pullman Volkswagen, Durham.

When the letters GTi was added to the boot of the Golf in 1976, Volkswagen created a totally different class of car; it could perform the daily duties, see you arrive at an elegant event in style, or flying about a track.

VW has launched its latest Golf GTi, but in all honesty, it hasn’t changed that much. It’s still a lovely object to want, will still do everything you need it to do and, at £25,845, it’s only £195 more expensive than its predecessor. The seventh generation car is faster but also 18% more efficient than the mk6- as well as rated five insurance groups lower; it seems VW has pulled a blinder. Alongside that, this new mk7 GTI marks the introduction of the GTI performance- a special £980 option pack that liberates 10hp more from the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, adds a new trick limited-slip front differential and bigger brakes.

You can still have your Golf GTi in standard form though, which is still great. I sampled the two variants with both manual and automatic DSG dual-clutch transmissions on road and track. The result is that the GTi has still got it. We’ll start with the latest GTi Performance. The 230hp 2.0-litre four feels very punchy

indeed - sprinting from 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds, helped by its 258lb ft of torque (up a massive 52lb ft on the mk6 GTI) produced from as low as 1,500rpm and sustained to 4,400rpm.

The manual is the one I would go for though. Driving it on road and track it felt much more involving, and although not the definitive gearbox for precision, the shift action is nice and weighted just right for all different types of driving.

VW’s second-generation Dynamic Chassis Control system allows you to tailor the car’s ride, handling and steering characteristics between Comfort, Normal, Sport, Eco and Individual modes. Even in the firmest Sport setting, the car remained agile and acquiescent, controlling body roll well but without any ruggedness from the suspension, even over big bumps.

This setting also weights up the steering - not to ridiculous levels, rather adding a touch more resistance to push through, involving you that bit more. Normal is great for cruising, and a perfect balance for everyday use. Manoeuvring is easy too, helped by a variable ratio steering system that allows for faster turning at lower speeds and more stability when travelling faster.

The standard mk7 Golf’s interior is a solid if not a sparkling place to sit. The GTI addresses any inadequacy with the regular car, adding a few finicky details to lift the cabin. The seat material, a classic GTi trait,

is funky and mixes nicely with the cool aluminium inserts in the leather steering wheel to create an expensive, sporting feel.

In true VW fashion it feels built to last and equipment specifications are great. All cars get dual-zone climate control, bi-xenon headlights and a touch screen infotainment system - including DAB radio, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity.

There’s plenty of space in the back for adult passengers and the 380-litre boot is among the best in class for size and usability. If the GTI excels as an all rounder dynamically, its interior certainly reinforces its broad scope of abilities.

Based on the standard Euro NCAP five-star rated mk7 Golf hatch, expect the GTi to be safe, too. The new XDS+ safety system now works on the rear wheels as well and the car also comes with VW’s automatic post-collision braking system. This will apply the brakes in the event of a crash to reduce movement from any secondary impacts, cutting further accidents and improving passenger safety.

The seventh iteration of VW’s now legendary Golf GTI is the best ever. It combines the classless, all-round abilities the mk6 version had in spades, but adds even more performance while being cheaper to run and insure. Overall, a great car, and I would definitely say it has numerous attractions to it, giving it a wide audience.

At 12 months your cute little puppy has transformed into a beautiful adult. While he may still having some filling out to do he’s physically mature and so able to enjoy longer walks, start advanced training and go jogging with you (although giant breed owners take note – your dog may be two before becoming fully mature).
