Veg etation vig ou r was assessed by m eans of fAPAR (the fraction of absorbedphotosynthetically active radiation (400-700nm ) absorbed by the g reen veg etationcom ponents). T he veg etation vig ou r m ap shows the differences in seasonal m ean fAPARbetween 2016 and the reference year: absolu te difference in seasonal m ean fAPAR (in %).T he reference year is the year before the drou g ht m itig ation m easu res which is m ostcom parable with 2016 with reg ard to clim ate (and veg etation g rowth).W here the m ean fAPAR increases between 2016 and the reference year, it is indicated ing reen. T he areas where the valu es decreased are shown in red. T he areas where valu es didnot chang e between reference and 2016 are represented in white.T he veg etation vig ou r m ap it is accom panied by basic topog raphic featu res su ch astransportation, hydrog raphy and popu lation featu res to g ive a g eog raphical reference. It alsoshows the drou g ht m itig ation m easu res W FPs bu ilt du ring the second half of 2015 at thepreviou sly listed seven locations in S om alia. T hese basic topog raphic featu res are derivedfrom pu blic datasets, refined by m eans of visu al interpretation of post-event im ag e: S PO T 6.T he produ cts are checked on a dedicated Q u ality Control S tation. Procedu res areim plem ented for the adm inistrative and technical qu ality control of the produ cts and servicesdelivered by the im ag e processing centre (CVB). T he M O DIS fAPAR and DM P produ ctsu sed in the context of this stu dy have been delivered operationally to JR C-M AR S u p till 2014and are cu rrently still being u pdated on a 10-day basis. Both, fAPAR and DM P produ cts, have been su bject to an intensive validation whereby the produ cts were com pared fordifferent sites in the world with g rou nd m easu rem ents (fAPAR vs. fAPAR from hem isphericalpictu res, DM P vs. m easu red biom ass) and with sim ilar estim ates derived from other satellitesensors (S PO T -VG T , Proba-V) or with other alg orithm s (from N AS A, Cyclopes,… ).O nly the area enclosed by the Area of Interest has been analyzed.
T he assessm ent of the im pact of drou g ht m itig ation m easu res in the AO Is on su rrou ndingveg etation was m ainly done u sing 10-daily M O DIS -250m im ag es. T he fAPAR and DM Pprodu cts that were u sed to estim ate g reen area extent, veg etation vig ou r and biom ass, respectively, were derived from daily M O DIS -250m L evel 1 calibrated radiance produ cts(M O D02Q KM , M O D02HKM , inclu ding ang u lar inform ation and a hig h-qu ality g eo-locationg rid) that were downloaded from N AS A.Vector layer: W FPs Drou g ht m itig ation m easu res, other related featu res and Hydrog raphyare dig itized from S PO T 6; T ransportation N etwork prim ary sou rce is O penS treetM ap ©O penS treetM ap Contribu tors, du ly u pdated from S PO T 6; Popu lated Places with nam eprim ary sou rce is S W AL IM - O CHA S ettlem ent layer (2011).Inset m aps: S om alia R eg ional and N ational bou ndaries m ain sou rce is U S AID/FE W S andm odified by U N DP - Data & Inform ation M anag em ent U nit (2001); G lobal Adm inistrativeBou ndaries (G ADM 2015).All data sou rces are com plete and with no g aps.
W FP activities in S om alia are of very different natu re. T his service requ est is focu sed on them onitoring and assessm ent of the drau g ht m itig ation m easu res that have been carried ou tdu ring the second half of 2015 in seven different locations: Biyom ane, Booram o, Dahir O g le,Dindinta, Dofarey, M iirsaare and T u u r. Constru ctions inclu de W ater catchm ent/pans and soilbu nds and stone lines. S ee table below for fu rther details.T he core u sers of the m ap is U N W orld Food Prog ram m e (W FP). T he potential additionalu sers of the m ap are any other au thorities involved in in-field operations.T he scope of the service requ est is to m onitor advances m ade in the im plem entation of localhu m anitarian recovery constru ction projects in S om alia, in particu lar drou g ht m itig ationm easu res and to assess their im pact on the su rrou nding veg etation recovery.
