BI-WEEKLY NEWSLETTER BY Vice President of Communications, Brooke McDaniel

Fellow Yellow Jackets, Welcome back after an extended winter break! Campus was completely coated in snow and ice at this point last week but thanks to the around-the-clock work of members of the Georgia Tech community we were able to start back to classes at least two days before other Atlanta area schools. Plenty of snowball fights and sledding down Freshman Hill provided an extra release before classes started on Thursday and the entire campus is back in full effect now—including SGA. Here are some things we’re working on currently: Construction: By now you have surely noticed the great amount of construction going on around campus that wasn’t present last semester. Our biggest concern is the safety of students as we look forward to the great developments being made on campus. Check back to http://www.sga.gatech.edu/undergraduate/construction for construction updates, and be sure to update us on any specific safety concerns you notice around campus.

Georgia Tech Day at the Capitol: Due to last week’s snow, Georgia Tech Day at the Capitol, originally scheduled for January 12, has been postponed. The State House passed a resolution commending student leaders from Tech that can be viewed here: http://www1.legis.ga.gov/legis/2011_12/pdf/hr21.pdf. Keep an eye on our website for information about when the event will be rescheduled

later in the semester.

HOPE Scholarship: Much discussion is being held on the State level about the future of the HOPE scholarship and we are heavily involved in those talks. Georgia Tech Student Body President, Corey Boone, worked closely with his UGA counterpart, Josh Delaney, to release a statement to news sources exploring options to ensure the program continues, as countless students rely entirely on the scholarship in order to attend college, but to make it more financially plausible. The article includes a number of ideas such as questioning funding given to the Pre-K program, to students attending private college and universities, and expanding the source of revenue.

JacketPages Updates:

As mentioned before winter break, JacketPages underwent a transformation to more easily showcase student involvement opportunities. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the changes, especially the changes in the bill submission process. Instructions about bill submissions can be found at http://www.sga.gatech.edu/undergraduate/info-for-organizations/bill-submission, including updates to the process. Open Positions in the House: The Georgia Tech Student Government Association Is currently accepting applications for the following positions in the Undergraduate House of Representatives:

• Biomedical Engineering Representative • Civil Engineering Representative • Co-op Program Representative • Electrical Engineering Representative • Industrial Design Representative • Physics Representative

SGA representatives play a role in allocating the nearly $5 million Student Activity Fee budget and also serve as advocates for the students within their school or program on a variety of campus issues. Meetings of the Undergraduate House are held weekly on Tuesdays at 7:30 PM. If you are interested in applying for the position, please visit http://www.sga.gatech.edu/undergraduate/legislative/get-involved. More information on SGA and on the role of the Undergraduate House of Representatives can also be found on our website, http://sga.gatech.edu/undergraduate.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, so applying for the position soon increases your chances of being selected. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email Executive Vice President Brenda Morales at [email protected].

Student Honor Committee: One position on the Student Honor Committee (one of several Institute Wide Committees filled by SGA) is available for Spring 2011. Faculty and student members on the Student Honor Committee listen to cases involving alleged dishonesty in academic matters. The committee's decisions become the official course of action for each case. Interested parties should write a short paragraph addressing the following two questions. All responses should be submitted to John Semmens, [email protected], no later than noon on 1/24/11.

Question 1: Why do you want to serve on the Student Honor Committee? Question 2: How do you help uphold the Honor Code at Georgia Tech?

Ninh’s office is now in the Flag Building, Suite 141 Office of Greek Affairs, room 141D. With any questions, she can be contacted at [email protected].

Student Government is here to serve you, so please know that we are always willing to hear from you. Please feel free to contact me at any time with concerns or questions that you may have, or if you’re interested in getting involved in what we’re doing!

Best wishes,
