Diversity is our specialty - wide open spaces, fields and streams made to order for migrating birds and countless
wildlife, rolling hills and wooded willow bluffs - starry summer nights, magnificent sun rises and breathtaking
sunsets - any nature lovers get-a-way.
2,072. The Municipal District of Provost No. 52 is home to 2,547 residents and sprawls over 5,632 quarters of land. The M.D. surrounds the Town of Provost and Villages of Amisk, Czar and Hughenden, including the hamlets of Bodo, Cadogan, Hayter and Metiskow. Hwy 13 intersects the M.D. from W (Camrose) to E (SK) and Hwy 41 N (Wainwright - Hwy 14) to S (Consort - Hwy 12). Sec 899 runs N and S into Provost, as does Sec 600 from Hwy 41, and Sec 599 cuts through the M.D. from the W to Hwy 41.
Provost is the main business centre for the District. The commercial strip on Hwy 13 and a vibrant downtown core will meet all your travelling needs. The Provost Visitor Information Centre is located at 4719 - 57 Ave. (Hwy 13).
The Provost Airport features a 75’ x 5,001’ runway. The airport is less than four minutes from downtown and is the largest, directly between Edmonton and Saskatoon. Elevation of the airport is 2,197’. The airport now has a NAV Canada approved - published GPS approach. N52 20 17 W10 16 44. Fuel services available.
Discovered in 1995, the Bodo Archaeological Sites are located near Bodo, SE of Provost. To tour the nearby sites, visitors must register at the Bodo Archaeological Society’s Confectionary, Gift & Souvenir Shop, located in the Bodo Community Hall. The hall is also home to University of Alberta Archaelogical Field School and students welcome your attendance at their labs and excavations. The sites include ancient bison hunting and processing grounds and pre-contact First Nations' encampments. These protected sites are one of the most significant archaeological finds in western Canada!
Bird watching opportunities abound along the Ribstone Creek that wanders through the M.D. of Provost. An area S of Provost stretching S from Sec 600 to Sounding Lake is designated the “Johnson Bluebird Trail” and is home to over 300 bluebird nests.
Capt. Ayre Lake boasts an expansive sandy beach and crystal clear water. Located S of Sec 600, you can boat (under
20km/hr), canoe, sailboard, swim or catch a five pound trout. A small rugged nine-hole golf course is located near the park. Ball diamonds, full service campsites, concession, showers and washrooms are also located in this picturesque park. Chokecherries and Saskatoon Berries grow wild nearby and wildlife includes both Mule Deer and White-Tailed Deer.
Shorncliffe Lake, located just W of Czar, is the perfect spot to spend the day boating or water skiing. Later, you can watch ball, play tennis or just relax while the children play at the on-site playground. Fully serviced campsites, a concession, showers and washrooms are available for your convenience.
Hughenden Golf Course is a picturesque nine-hole grass greens with clubhouse, pro shop and on-site camping, located alongside Hwy 13, just W of Hughenden.
Rosenheim Church is the largest Neo-Gothic church in Alberta. The church, built in 1922 is an excellent example of architecture style from south Germany. Designated an Alberta Historic Site in 1968, its original splendour is fully restored. Located 10 km S and 5 km E of Provost. The Lutheran Chorale Concert takes place annually in June. A number of
private functions are held each year at the Rosenheim Church.
The Prairie Panorama Museum and Machinerama, located at Shorncliffe Lake provides an interesting day for exploring local history and artifacts.
An Original Stone House, lovingly restored by the Carson family of Hughenden on their property that was occupied from 1906 - 1960. Open for public viewing during the summer, it is located 11 km S of Amisk on Sec 884 and 1 km W on TWP. RD. 404.
During the Winter months one can enjoy cross-country skiing, ice fishing, curling, snow cross and snowmobiling throughout the M.D.
During the Fall, sportsmen from all over North America come to our area for the diverse hunting. White-Tailed Deer, Mule Deer, Elk, Moose and waterfowl are abundant. Trophy quality animals are harvested throughout the M.D. every year.
The Municipal District and Town of Provost invite you to !
Bodo, Capt. Ayre, Shorncliffe and a private Church Camp each offer group use areas for that perfect spot to host your family reunion, providing camping, outdoor serenity and privacy. The M.D. also maintains overnight highway campgrounds at Czar, Hansman Lake and Hayter. Looking for more excitement - the M.D. is home to a number of professional chuck wagon drivers and rodeo cowboys. During the last weekend in May, Cadogan hosts an annual amateur rodeo and toe-tapping country-dance.
