Thank You (Again)Sometimes, you just have to thank someonewho has done so much for the promotionand appreciation of quilting Ð both tradi-tional and art. And that person is Barb Gardner.Thank you.I opened up my copy of the June 2011newsletter of CUC (Colorado Quilting Council)and there was a two page, 4 color spread of herreview of our FRCQ show "Frontiers: ColoradoInspirations and Fiber Art Innovations" at the Rocky Mountain QuiltMuseum. Illustrated with numerous photos of pieces in the exhibit, Barbwrote an interesting article highlighting our artistic techniques in creatingour fiber art. But the best part for me was knowing it was going to be readby almost 1,000 CUC members. If we can inspire more traditional quiltersto try some of our artistic techniques, we can make a huge contribution tothe art quilt community.More art quilters = more inspiration, idea sharing, talent, and fun.IÕd also like to thank the SAQA reps (Liz Kettle, Christi Beckmannand Kate Cox) for sharing the SAQA trunk show with us during the lastmeeting. Seeing other fiber artists work from around the globe is anoth-er way to be inspired to try new techniques and ideas in our own work. And again, I would like to thank Susan Brooks who recruited andorganized our carpooling on that Friday night. That was a BIG job andwell done. And here are some thanks from SAQA attendeesÉÉ."The regional group Front Range Quilters were super in hospitality.

The feasts for eyes and tummy were great on Friday night." Nancy Cook,Charlotte, NCÒI too was touched by the hospitality shown by all the Denver area

members, the Front Range QuiltersÉ You all are so privileged to have fiberart so accepted and plentiful in your area. I'm jealous!Ó Jenny K. Lyon,Granite Bay, California

ÒI wanted to write to say what a privilege it was for Leo and I toattend the Front Range Contemporary Quilters the Monday evening beforethe SAQA Conference. I so appreciated your sincere welcome. It really set thetone for me for meeting so many highly talented professionals within yourgroup and at the SAQA conference later in the week.Ó Carol Howard Donati,Ottawa, CanadaSee you at the ÒDessert & DemoÓ meeting and donÕt forget to comeearly so you can support your fellow artists by buying some of their work.Last year, I got two pairs of hand-dyed socks from Patti Hawkins and I justlove wearing them!Regards,Carol Ann Waugh, FRCQ [email protected]

ÒEmerging StyleÓSeptember 16, 17,18, 20119 am - 5 pm each dayFranciscan Retreat CenterColorado SpringsCynthia Corbin gets a kick out of combining unlikelycolors and textures and playing with shapes that arejust this side of awkward. She is interested inabstract images and the expression of something intangi-ble.In the workshop, Emerging Styles, Cynthia looks for ele-ments that define an artistÕs style. This involves exploringmaterials, subject matter, colors, line and unlikely thingslike what the artist had for breakfast! Style results fromwho we are and what we care about.ÒTo keep growing as an artist, it is always good to stretchthe possibilities. In a series of studies, we will work withour favorites --colors, subjects, shapes --- and explore theiropposites. We will pay attention to what is strong in ourcompositions, and what is weak.We will concentrate on translating ideas into fabric, pulling for a sense of meaning that is not obvious, notautomatic, but unexpected and surprising --- somethingthat demonstrates who we are as individual artists.ÓThis exciting workshop will be held at the beautiful Fran-ciscan Retreat Center in Colorado Springs. The site islocated on a hillside overlooking the city in one directionand the foothills in another. It is dotted with paths forwalking and meditation and sports deer in abundance!Save these dates and plan to join us for an exciting andhighly personal journey with Cynthia Corbin.See samples of her work at www.cynthiacorbin.com September 16, 17, 18, 2011Franciscan Retreat Center,Colorado SpringsWorkshop cost:_____________Rooms at the Franciscan Retreat Center are $50 for a sin-gle occupant; $60 for double occupancy. Barbara BeasleyPicture Perfect:Learn how to turn your favorite photo into a work offiber art. These easy steps will work for photos ofpeople, pets, places, or anything elseDianna VanderDoesPainted Layers:Learn a new way to add complexity, color and texture tothe surface of your quilt using painted fusible web. Thistechnique creates wonderful organic patterning oncloth. It is also neat to apply and easy to control. You canmake your layers bold and opaque, or subtle and trans-parent, hard-edged and geometric, or flowing and organ-ic. This demo will help you understand all of the vari-ables involved in creating that effect that you want.Sheryll RobbinsGelatin Monoprints:Printing on a gelatin plate will demonstrate the processof creating monotypes (one of a kind prints). This simpleplate made of unflavored gelatin and water is an amaz-ing surface on which to apply paint and make marks. Theprocess yields instant gratification and a bounty ofdetailed and textured prints. A variety of tools and tech-niques will be demonstrated.

Helen McKeePolymer Clay: Polymer Clay is a remarkable medium. It can be carved, textured, painted, buffed, stamped, and drilled. It cansimulate ivory, stone, glass, and other materials. Itremains flexible until it is baked. Helen will show someof these possibilities.Phillippa LackSewable Metal:Who says you canÕt sew into metal? Phil Lack will showyou first in fact that thin sheets of copper will takemachine stitching very well, with no harm done to yourmachine! This obliging metal can also be crimped andmanipulated to add texture and shine to your fiber art-works.Jo FitsellLayered Marbling:Learn a new approach for an ancient technique. Mar-bling is the process of floating thinned paint on the sur-face of thickened water. Create wonderful organicshapes on paper and fabric.
