This summer”

Whatever the weather, we’re celebrating the great outdoors with the opening of our beach arena. This large pitch at the rear of the Brentwood Centre is the borough’s Olympic legacy, totally grant funded and built using sand from the Olympic beach volleyball courts in theHorse Guards Parade. This space allows us to extend our range of sports activities even further. For more details see page 10 and make a diary date for Bank Holiday weekend May 26th & 27th when we’ll be showcasing all the exciting new sports.

We’re also pleased to announce we have received a £15,000 grant from the Big Society Fund which allows us to carry out some minor renovations in the poolside changing area. Our long term plans involve substantial improvements to this facility and we have already started a fund-raising campaign, launched with a successful wine tasting evening.

Please take time to read this magazine, there’s plenty going on right here on your doorstep and we hope you enjoy a packed summer of sport and leisure.

Kind Regards,

Simon Hughe sChairmanBrentwood Leisure Trust

Beliefs aBouT lower BaCk pain (lBp) – a loT has Changed

The following are some of the most commonly reported back pain myths!- I’ve hurt my back, so I will probably have a bad back from now on

- I have back pain, so I should stay in bed and rest- The more back pain I have, the more my spine is damaged

- My back pain is due to something being “out of place” - I need a scan or xray for my back pain

- I need an operation to cure my back painSo what should I do if I have back pain for the first time?

Broadly speaking, people who develop back pain for the first time should be quickly screened by a physiotherapist, doctor or healthcare professional. Once this has been

done an appropriate rehabilitation programme or, in a small number of cases, relevant investigation can be requested to help you restore function as soon as possible. The above information is taken from and can be found on www.move4health.ie)

Pool improvementsFor a week in April 2013, both of our swimming pools closed for essential

maintenance. During this time we improved the lighting in the swimming area (thanks to Elite Renewables), performed essential pipe work & deep cleaned the poolside and

changing rooms. The diagram below shows what the lighting improvements will mean to us and the environment:

Furthermore, the essential pipework maintenance means that we can improve the shower facilities in the near future. We would like to thank our customers for their

patience as we improve our facility for you and your family.

Water Circuits is a water based fitness session using weights and floats combined with swimming. Sandra has been attending the class taken by Sue for 2 years since it began at The Brentwood Centre and she believes it has changed her life for the better, so we thought that she was the best person to tell you all about it.

Can you tell us what made you come along to the Brentwood Centre and try out the new water Circuit class?I had been suffering with arthritis and painful joints for a number of years so went to Sue, the instructor for a Sports Massage. Sue suggested I try the new Water Circuit class at Brentwood as it is low impact with very little weight bearing exercise being in water. Living in Collier Row it was a bit of a trek, but I had found nothing locally that helped me so thought I would give it a go. It was the best thing I have ever done.what benefits have you gained from doing the class? Before doing the class I had to have pain killers every day for the pain in my arthritic joints, since doing the class I no longer take them and don’t need them. All the swelling has gone down and I feel amazing, I have so much more energy and can see that my body is toning.what does the class involve? It is a fitness circuit in water, you use float dumbells, noodles and big floats. We do squats, water running and swimming. It’s a really simple but effective class, you can work at your own pace and push yourself as hard as you want. The instructor Sue makes you feel really comfortable and the other members in the class are not intimidating at all. It’s a long way to come from Collier row?I have tried other classes locally but nothing has been as effective as this class. If I miss 1 week I start to stiffen up and feel miserable. It is well worth the journey and I will keep coming. I like the extra energy it gives me to play with my Grandchildren.

The class takes place on a Wednesday evening at 8pm and a Friday morning at 9.45am

Class Focus: Water Circuits

club focus -spartaN taekwoN-DoSpartan Taekwon-Do is run jointly by Mr Kevin Ebbs and Mr Jerry Baldwin, who between them possess over 35 years experience in Martial Arts. Students learn self defence including how to defend themselves against a knife attack, principles of power, patterns, fitness, stretching, confidence, self-control and many different types of sparring including the opportunity to compete if they wish to (not compulsory). The first month of training with Spartan Tkd is absolutely free, though for their own security, we would expect a student to obtain a licence with A.C.E (which also insures the student for a whole year) on their third lesson with us. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we train at the new MMA Dojang (training centre) and run classes aimed specifically at children and their parents, beginning Juniors and Adults and on classes on Thursdays designed to brush aside the stresses of the day, get fit and learn the Korean Art of Self Defence – see www.spartantaekwondo.com for further details.

Our top of the range 3G Synthetic pitch is suitable for hosting 2 x 5 a side or 1 x 7 a side pitches at any one time. It is an area created for football and rugby alike. With a rubber crumb that doesn’t get water logged like a standard pitch,

the season will not be interrupted by the rain. It’s also floodlit for evening use!

To book our 3G pitch for your club, team or friends, please call 01277 215151. Alternatively if you want to join a 6-a-side league, use the contact details to the right.
