The view of Main Street the morning after the October 14, 1908 fire, which started in a closet at the Grand Hotel, located then at Main and Subway. No fire hose was handy, so the blaze took over, spreading quickly throughout the wooden structure. The fire then jumped Subway, engulfing everything down to the Woolworth Building. That structure’s brick walls acted as a firebreak, halting the spread down the street on that side. But flames jumped across to the south side, destroying the site of what is now Atalanta’s Bookstore. Once again, that building’s wall stopped the fire from progressing down the street, so it turned back and proceeded to devour most of upper Main Street on both sides, and then climbed up Clawson Hill, engulfing almost every structure there. 100 structures were lost, and 500 people were made homeless. A special report to The Bisbee Daily Review reported that the light from the massive fire was visible from Pinal Peak. Excerpted from an account written by Henry Bethea for The Copper Chronicles. There wasn’t a dry eye around for the soldiers
from Douglas’ 2220 National Guard Transporta-
tion Company who received an emotional send-
off Saturday as they begin a year long deployment
that will eventually take them to Kuwait.
The 15 soldiers from Douglas gathered at the
National Guard Armory on Eighth Street and
from there said goodbye to their families, friends
and supporters before being escorted out of town
by the American Legion Harley riders and the
Douglas Police Dept. From here they joined the
rest of their squad in Tucson where they will train
for the four weeks before heading to Indiana for
additional training. The 2220 (which used to be
the 2222nd) is expected to be in Iraq by mid May.
SSG Eddie Gracia who is in charge of the Dou-
glas detachment, said while in Kuwait the 2220
will be “shutting down the lights in Iraq” perform-
ing pretty much convoy operations.
“We’re a transportation company and that’s
what we do … we transport stuff,” he said.
Unlike previous tours Gracia said this unit is not
taking any company equipment over and will in-
stead begin preparing to bring stuff back.
“This is pretty awesome because this unit was
the first one to go and now it looks like we’re go-
ing to be the last transportation company out,” he
said.Gracia is not actually going himself to Kuwait
but will stay with the 2220 until they finish their
training in Indiana.
“When they ship out I come back over here to
take care of anything else that needs to be taken
care of,” he said.
Some of Douglas’ soldiers are headed back for
their third tour while others are experiencing their
first.
Regardless of how many tours these brave men
and women have served they all admit the good-
byes are the hardest part of their military duties.
“This is a real emotional time for them and their
families,” Gracia said. “We’re our own family
within the unit here but leaving their actual fami-
ly is the hardest thing.”
Gracia says this is even hard on him knowing
what these soldiers are going through.
“I want to go and be with them,” he said. “But
I’ve been given orders to stay back. … Some peo-
ple say that’s a good thing but I don’t feel that way.
I want to be with them.”
Gracia says he has spent a lot of time with the
soldiers of the 2220 and feels strongly they are
ready to do the job they are asked to do.
“They’ve been trained well,” he said. “They’ll
be alright.”The 2220 is expected to return home sometime
next February or March.

of the Cochise County Sher-
iff’s Office, at approximately
11:40 a.m. on Feb. 8 the CC-
SO was advised of a dead
body located in some brush at
mile post 308 on Highway
80.Capas said upon arrival
deputies discovered the body
of a Hispanic female who ap-
peared to have been dragged
a short distance from the side
of the roadway to a brush
area approximately 100
yards away.
The Cochise County Med-
ical Examiner completed the
autopsy this past week on the
woman, now identified as
Maria Ramirez Orosco, 33,
from the Mexico City area of
Mexico and determined the
manner of death was a homi-

At this time, I believe I can be more effective in my support for quality education in Bisbee by using my skills and experience outside of the board setting. In my nearly 12 years on the board I have seen tremendous progress achieved with our five board members working together with a common purpose of keeping the focus on what is best for our students. Our main objective has been to prepare kids for future success in college, in technical school, in the workforce and in life. My personal goal and the goal of many board members with whom I have served over the years has been to ensure that the Bisbee School District is one of the top performing districts in the State of Arizona. Achieving that objec-tive requires that the primary focus always remains on the kids we serve and their student achievement so that the educational experience provided is of the high-est quality. Success like this doesn’t just happen — it requires commit-ment, hard work and unity of purpose from all involved.

BISBEE — Former Bisbee school board President Ed Matchett has announced his in-tention to retire from the board after 12 years of service. The move came after Superinten-dent Gail Covington made public on Satur-day her intent to retire.
“I have sent a letter to County School Super-intendent Trudy Berry announcing my resig-nation from the Bisbee School Board,” Matchett said in a letter to the edi-tor received by the Her-ald/Review on Saturday. “At this time, I believe I can be more effective in my support for quality education in Bisbee by using my skills and ex-perience outside of the board setting.”
Matchett said he’d prefer not to speak fur-ther on the matter un-til after the letter had been published.
Covington said she is certainly sad to see Matchett stepping down from the board after many years of service to the school district.
“I will miss our work together,” she said. “but I certainly understand why he’s leaving, and I support him.”
She could not speak to why Matchett intends to exit, but said, “He ab-solutely has students in the forefront in every decision he’s made.”
She would not elabo-rate on her own reasons for seeking retirement but referred back to the

SIERRA VISTA — As part of the celebration of the 100th anniver-sary of Boy Scouting in America, local Scouts showed off a variety of hands-on projects and enjoyed some outdoor games during expo in Veterans’ Memorial Park on Saturday.
Scouts often do activi-ties in secluded areas, so the expo gave them a chance to share some of what they do, said James Harper, district program chairman for Boy Scouts. Saturday’s activities included the assembly of two mon-key bridges, the assem-bly of a catapult, min-iature boat racing and the Pinewood Derby.
Five age groups of Cub Scouts competed in the Pinewood Der-by, and medals were awarded to the top three from each group.
Andrew Richardson won first place in the tiger category, which is for kids ages 6 to 7, and comes from a Scout-ing family, he said. His brothers helped him make his car but he is the first one to place first in the derby.
Though he was ex-cited to be the first one to win, he said he was not going to brag to his brothers about it.

As construction shifts gears, fort’s East Gate takes key role BY BILL HESSHERALD/REVIEW
FORT HUACHUCA — Traffic patterns going on and off the post will change starting 3 p.m. today with the Main Gate being closed and the new East Gate being opened, a fort spokeswoman said.
The constraint of traffic com-ing on the post through the Main Gate is part of a major project involving all three gates on the fort, including the West
Gate, post public affairs officer Angela Moncur said.
Now that work on the East Gate is completed, it will be the main entrance and exit from the installation through at least June, when construction of the new Main Gate is expected to be done, she said.

SIERRA VISTA — Al-though the Sierra Vista Regional Health Cen-ter board of trustees has been asked to hold off from a partnership agreement with Caronde-let Health Network that becomes effective April 17, the answer is no.
In response to a se-ries of Herald/Review questions put to Ma-rie Wurth, the SVHRC main spokeswoman on the issue, she said, “The agreement has been signed and will be effective April 17, 2010.”
Wurth also noted the trustees worked with several state and nation-al legal and strategic experts in developing the agreement with the Catholic health network, and the hospital paid for its counsel.
However, she said in response to a letter sent to the trustees seeking redress of the decision, “the Board of Trustees will review and address the letter they received.”
The Tuesday letter was from Dr. Cynthia Funckes, a Sierra Vista obstetrics/gynecology physician representing some concerned doc-
tors of SVRHC; Judith Waxman, vice presi-dent of health and re-productive rights of the National Women’s Law Center; and Lois Uttley, director of the Merger-Watch project. It asked for a reconsideration of the partnership.
Among issues of con-cern outlined in the let-ter were the need for review by state authori-ties, a public hearing and potential impact of the pending transaction on access to health care services and its quality.
The key concernsEach area in the let-
ter outlined a number of concerns, such as:
• A belief the affilia-tion should be subject to state review, “given the serious change in the operation and con-trol of the hospital ...”
• The Arizona attor-ney general has a role in determining whether the board violated its fi-duciary duties of care, loyalty and obedience in taking action affecting a nonprofit operation.
• Under common law, a charitable institution, such as the hospital, is

SIERRA VISTA — The family of Dale Phillip Evon was finally able to bring home the boy’s ash-es last week, thanks to the help of an anonymous donor who cov-
ered funeral home expenses they had been unable to pay. Dale was an 8-year-old student at Village Meadows Elementary School who recently died of lung failure resulting from a long battle with leukemia.
“I got to bring him home. I car-ried him home. I cried, but I got to carry him home,” said Jimmy Evon, Dale’s father. This was an important moment for Jimmy and his other son, 10-year-old Jay Evon, who could only afford
to visit Dale at University Medi-cal Center in Tucson once every three weeks or so and never had a chance to say goodbye.
“I wasn’t there for him. He was only 8 years old,” Jimmy Evon said, trying to stifle his tears. “My other son is crying in his sleep, talks about it all the time. That was his buddy, his brother. He didn’t even get to say last re-spects to him, either, because we

SIERRA VISTA — More charges have been filed against a man police said tried to rob a woman but ended up having a handgun pulled on him by the would-be victim.
Stephen Prickett, 29, is charged with attempted mur-der, three counts of aggravat-ed assault, armed robbery,
kidnapping and attempted theft of a vehicle.
At 3:12 p.m. Friday, police got a report of shots fired in the area behind Walmart, 657 N. Highway 90 Bypass. Officers were in the area and able to respond in about a minute, said Tracy Grady, Sierra Vista police public in-formation officer.

woman Gabrielle Giffords, the Willcox Depart-ment of Public Safety recently submitted afunding request for nearly $1 million.Giffords’ office had asked for fiscal year2010-2011 federal appropriations fundingrequests for projects in Southern Arizona, saidRuth Graham, the city’s finance director.On Feb. 19, the city submitted a request forfunding in the amount of $989,960 to purchasea multi-purpose ladder truck for the firedepartment, she said in her Feb. 22 letter tocouncil.
“If this project is funded, the city plans topurchase a Quint Fire Truck, which wouldserve all purposes necessary for extinguishingstructure fires,” said Graham, adding that thetruck includes “five features in one unit: anaerial device, a pump, a hose, a water tank,and ground ladders.”“In the event of an emergency, this truckwould become the main response vehicle foremergencies because the unit will be capableof serving many different emergency needs,”she said.
Graham said that since the department’s pri-ority is to “keep all citizens, visitors, and prop-erty safe,” “this vehicle will be an essential toolfor the fire department.”“Willcox has several buildings and grain ele-vators that the trucks in our existing fleet can-not reach,” she explained.In his Feb. 18 letter of support, WillcoxMayor Sam Lindsey talked about the impor-tance of purchasing “a fire truck equippedwith a ladder to reach buildings higher thantwo stories.”
“This purchase is vital to our community,not only for residents, but for our tourists aswell,” said Lindsey, pointing out that the localHoliday Inn is three stories high.“At this time, the City of Willcox does nothave rescue equipment that can reach thethird floor,” he said in his letter addressed toLegislative Director Caryn Schenewerk withGiffords’ office.Lindsey said that the proposed fire truckpurchase is in keeping with the Willcox Gener-al Plan.
