Meet Mrs. Tiffany Slaughter – New BIS Principal Dear Crater, BIS families: I am honored to introduce myself to you as your new principal of the Crater School of Business, Innovation and Science. I believe very strongly in the vision of BIS and the community of Central Point. Moreover, I believe in the work our teachers do to find the strengths in our students, teach them to communicate, work as a team and problem solve and then prepare students how to thrive in college and career settings. As a former small-school, charter high school principal, I am passionate about small schools, effective instruction and the impacts they have on kids. Crater families need to be commended for their dedication to their small schools. Research shows us that there is no better indicator of a student’s success than a student’s engagement in a classroom. Small schools and small class sizes provide us the opportunity for better engagement, healthy relationships and individual attention given to kids. Crater is doing what is best for students!

Here is a little information about me.... I grew up in Boise, Idaho and attended Kuna High School. When I was old enough to join athletics, I played volleyball, basketball, softball and tennis. I graduated college from Eastern Oregon University with a Master’s in Education and a Bachelor’s in English. I also played volleyball and tennis for EOU. Go Mounties! My first teaching job was in a tiny town called Spray, Oregon. I was the only language arts teacher for grades 7-12, and I was also the varsity volleyball coach, varsity basketball coach, drama teacher and speech teacher. After three years in Spray, I moved to Klamath Falls and began teaching grades 9-11 language arts. Early in my career, I took an interest in project-based instruction and civic service opportunities for kids. I worked for KUHS for seven years when I finally decided it was time for something new. I put in an application to teach English in Medellin, Colombia, South America, and I applied for a Japanese Fulbright. The spring of 2007, I was offered both. I began to make plans for my departure to Japan and for my move to Colombia. However, the first day of spring break, I received a phone call from a group of people who introduced themselves as the EagleRidge High School Charter Board. They asked me to take a position as the lead teacher for a new charter high school. I had no idea what a charter school was, but I knew as long as the school was small and we were using projects and civic service to engage students, I wanted in on the action. I returned from studying k-12 schools in Japan in late October and began my adventure as a charter school teacher. After six months, I was asked to apply for my administrative license so that I could take over as the charter school director/principal. Now, almost seven years after opening EagleRidge High School, I am proud to have the opportunity to move my family to the Rogue Valley (the most beautiful place in Oregon) to continue my career with BIS and to continue promoting my love for small schools.
