Child welfare must meet young children’s unique developmental needs
to prepare them for school and life.
But some child welfare practices threaten their healthy development- and threaten the foundation
of readiness for school.

Child Focus Team (CFT)

Who is the CFT?The Child Focus Team is a multi-
disciplinary team that screens all children under the age of 6 at entry to the dependency court system in the areas of:
• Health• Development• Education• Mental Health• Placement• Visitation
Funding assistance is received from First 5 Fresno County and Ready to Succeed.

What does CFT Do? First review –
Approximately 5 days after Detention Identify any immediate referrals needed and make
them. Identify what additional information is needed and plan
for how to obtain it. Share information with the case manager, supervisor,
and court writer via email
Follow-up Individual CFT participants follow up in their respective
areas Home Visitation to Care provider Provides initial information to supplement Jurisdiction

What does CFT Do? Second review
(Approximately 5 days after Jurisdiction hearing) Review updates since Initial Review Follow-up with case manager as needed in the
following areas: Health Recommended Assessments Visitation Placement
This is the safety net to make sure that all children 0-5 have been screened.

Specialized Foster Parent TrainingCaring for Children Birth to 6 Years Old
Developed out of a recognition that care providers of young children need specialized
training and support.
The first training series began in October, 2009 and is scheduled to be completed in June, 2010
This is a Train the Trainers model that includes information sharing as well as a development of
ongoing peer support.
