HOW BIRMINGHAM CAREERS AND YOUTH SERVICE CAN HELP YOU “I’m a Birmingham Careers Service Personal Adviser and I help young people to think about their career goals and the steps they need to take to achieve them. Come and see me at one of our outreach venues and I can talk with you about your career ideas (especially if you’re struggling to think of any) and make sure you know about the different routes and options such as education, training, and apprenticeships. I can help you with making applications, writing a CV, interview preparation or whatever support you need to move on to a course, training or a job. If you need other support, I can introduce you to services, such as mentoring, benefits advice or a Teen Parent Adviser.’’ “I’m a Youth worker and I know how hard it can be for some young people to think about their career ideas and to cope with pressure from family and friends to get it all sorted out. Sometimes it’s hard to get motivated or to know how to turn a plan into actions. I can help you with this and offer practical support to get into education, training or employment. It could be something as simple as providing you with a bus token to get to an interview or you may need help with sorting out somewhere to live or benefit problems. Of course, if you just want to hang out at our centres or get involved in one of our projects or summer activities – then that’s fine too.” "I was at college but I left after just a few days because I was struggling to keep up. I knew Pele was a Careers Adviser because he had seen me before at the Youth Offending centre. He knew that I had ADHD and understood why I couldn’t cope with the course. He spoke to all the people involved and sorted out proper support for me at college. It took a while to sort out so he suggested that I did a VIY construction course at Shard End Youth Centre. It was good fun and made me feel more confident about going back to college to start my construction course. Pele also introduced me to Tom, a mentor from the Youth Service who sorted out and paid for English and maths tutoring to get me ready for college and took me go-carting in half term. I went back to college and things are a whole lot better now that the tutors know what help I need. Pele and Tom were really helpful and I wouldn’t be back on the course if it wasn’t for their support. I’m really proud that I didn’t drift back into getting into trouble with the police and instead I’m moving onto the next level of my course in September and applying for a part time jobs."
