Verdant, virgin woods, rumbling waterfalls and the indulgent warmth of wilderness- that is rain forest for you. Traditionally, tropical rainforests are called the 'jewels of the Earth' because of the richness of animal and plant life found here. Scientists often find as-yet-undiscovered species of reptiles, amphibians and mammals in the secret depths of the mighty rainforest. Often, the rainforest flora consists of rare, medicinal plants and herbs. To stand under the verdant canopy and sense the forest whispering around you is like slipping into another time altogether: a simpler time when man had not yet broken Nature's peace. The experience becomes much more meaningful when you interact with the inhabitants who are well-versed with the features and quirks of the breathtaking waterfalls and the rainforest that surround them.

A Rainforest can be described as a tall, dense jungle. The reason it is called a "rain" forest is because of the high amount of rainfall it gets per year. The climate of a rain forest is very hot and humid so the animals and plants that exist there must learn to adapt to this climate. A well-preserved tropical rainforest is in itself an uncommon sight; spotting the exotic animals and birds that make the forest their home is rarer still. Once you are there, you can give up all the cares of civilisation and rewrite the cadences of your life.

It has become imperative that all humankind understand the contribution the rainforests and its species make in our lives. For dissemination of knowledge of this awesome congregation of nature, this years' theme of Birla White Yuva Ratna design competition is to design “an Interpretation Centre (Institute) for Rain Forest Ecosystem”. Young minds are invited to interpret and create such specialized institutions for communicating the significance of rainforest ecosystem.

These young minds of tomorrow have to create a medium which will help to unravel some of the mysteries of this complex ecosystem. Students can also work on “Visitors' Information centre” and “100 Meters long approach way to the Eco Tourism Centre” in association of Interpretation Centres, as an intelligent and experienced 'Guide' to enhance enjoyment of the rainforest.

thIn its 8 year of grand and successful running, Birla White takes a special initiative to take the popular Birla White Yuva Ratna Award to more countries in the global arena. Students from Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Nepal, Bangladesh and Gulf countries are invited along with their counterparts from the Indian universities and colleges of architecture to participate in this uniquely global competition for the students of architecture.

What else the students can ask for? If successful, nothing stops them from getting the much awaited international recognition and be seen amongst the few celebrity star architecture students.

Birla White Yuva Ratna Awards – 2011 (Theme) Architectural Design Competition Programme

It is proposed to establish an Interpretation Centre (Institute) for Rain Forest Ecosystem in a plot of approximately 12.5 Acres. The objective of setting up of such an institute is to provide a firsthand onsite and real time opportunity to the researchers to understand the ecosystem of the rain forest and carry out further research and investigation in this field.

The idea is to create a space where working and living in communion with nature transports you to a higher plane altogether. The proposed site is deep inside the jungle with a lot of full grown trees in it. There is a very small patch of open ground available which is considered for establishing the proposed Interpretation Centre. The site is accessible only by a small cart way that winds through the hills and trees of the rainforest. No motorised vehicle running on Fossil Fuel will be allowed for reaching the Centre. Only Golf Cart like vehicles running either on batteries charged by solar power or alternative energy will ferry the inmates and visitors to the centre from the Visitors Centre that is proposed right on the main road on the periphery of the jungle. The Interpretation centre and the Visitors centre will also be connected with covered walk way to encourage walking to and from the Interpretation Centre.

The Design Competition is divided in two categories:

1) Interpretation Centre (Institute) for Rain Forest Ecosystem of approximately 2500 Sq. Mts. Built Up area. 2) Visitors and Tourist Information Centre of 500 Sq. Mts. Built Up area.

Uniqueness of the proposed concept will be judged not only on the basis of built form but also its meaningful adaptability to the site locations, climatic conditions and applicability of suitable material to make the proposed building an ideal solution representing both the high ideals of the ICRFE and sustainable and environmental friendly design practices.

Both category projects are open to all bonafide students of architecture studying in any university or college of architecture in India or in SAARC nations.

The Site

The site is located in the midst of thick rain forest. The site location can be changed depending on the geographical location of the participating student or the institute, but topographical, climatic and landscape features will not change.

The site is linear in its shape appearance and has trees with average girth of 1200 mm and average height being approximately 30 Meters. There are approximately 540 trees and all of which need to be preserved while designing the project. The plot is mostly flat and can be approached only by a pedestrian pathway. The nearest motorable approach is approximately 80 meters away.

Though there is no restriction on the ground coverage, importance will be given to consideration given to the site topography and our door area planning while judging the design entries and the design sensitive to the site profile will be highly appreciated.

The Project:

The design and construction of the proposed building to house the project components must reflect concern for the eco system of the rain forests. The design should take into consideration that minimum or nil environmental damage is done to the surroundings, flora and fauna of the forest. The architecture and design of the proposed facility must suit the green concept and should be in complete harmony with its natural settings and green environment. The design concepts should go beyond mere material application or technological interpretation of Green Building Concept. Getting a platinum rating [as per the present IGBC rating system] will be considered just as a starting point and participants are expected to demonstrate creative excellence and sensitiveness to our planet's fragile and endangered eco system.

The participants' understanding and concern for the green agenda in architecture and design should reflect very prominently and clearly in the concepts that they wish to submit. Innovative methods and materials used for making the presentation will be highly appreciated and may be considered for additional points.

In this round of Birla White Yuva Ratna Students' Design Competition, the emphasis is more on the quality of the project subject than on the size of the proposed building structure. Importance will also be given to ideation process than to the architectural mass or to the design orientation for the sake of being different or innovative.

Birla White Textura

Birla White Levelplast

Birla White GRC.

Do away with boring plain walls; get Birla White's Textura – a white cement-based wall finish that is decorative, protective and economical. It gives your walls an artistic and stylish makeover with exciting textures, beautiful finishes, vibrant colours and amazing shades. What's more, it also ensures they stay as good as new for years to come. Birla White Textura is available in two varieties RF, Spray / Roller finish, ideal for interiors and TF, the Trowel finish, suited for external walls. Properties like water resistance, compatibility with plastered / concrete walls, extra adhesive strength, durability, high breathability and UV resistance make it a wiser choice against Acrylic textures. It does not require curing and its special formulation keeps it safe against the ill-effects of weather.

For a white, smooth and leveled surface for painting, Birla white Levelplast is your best solution. Levelplast can cover major undulations on the walls. This water resistant, white cement-based product is used on concrete / mortar walls (Internal and External) and ceiling for leveling purpose. Levelplast does not require water curing and can be applied even on moist surfaces. It has more adhesive strength, durability and increases the life of paints as compared to other conventional products like P. O. P and Gypsum. It fills the fine pores of mortar / Concrete walls and ceilings, to give an extremely smooth surface.

Picture your living space with an Egyptian cavetto-and-fillet cornice at the entrance, followed by decorative elevations inside, from walls and ceilings to staircase and minarets. It's not as impossible as it sounds! Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GRC) made from Birla White Cement breathes life into your dream home.

Birla White GRC is a unique and revolutionary construction material, combining the properties of cement mortars with the flexural and tensile strength of special glass fibres. Currently used worldwide in cladding and associated architectural components, Birla White GRC is made of Birla White Cement, high silica sand, alkali resistant glass fibres and other admixtures. Naturally occurring oxide pigments are added to get the desired shade. It can be made to resemble natural stones or exposed brick or even wood.

GRC dramatically alters the internal or external character of any building and gives form to your imagination. Slender, slick and lightweight, it is a new revolution in the world of modern architecture.
