Welcome to Term 2, 2017 at Shore Dance!We hope you have all enjoyed the school holidays and had a great Easter! An especially warm welcome to all of our new students joining us this term. We have lots of exciting things coming up this term so please make sure you have a good read through of this newsletter as it contains a lot of important information relevant to all of our students. We hope you have another fantastic term at Shore Dance!

NEW Classes Starting Term 2:We are very excited to be launching some brand new classes in Term 2 at Shore Dance! These include Barre classes, a Pilates class, and an Adults Contemporary class. We would like to welcome you to come along for a free trial class. Please contact us to secure your place as places are limited in each class.

The class times are as follows:Barre Classes: Thursdays 9:00-10:00am & Saturdays 1:15-2:15pm (Front Studio)Pilates Class: Tuesdays 9:00-10:00am (Front Studio)Adult Contemporary Class: Fridays 6:15-7:15pm (All Saints Hall)

Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday:Monday 5th of June is Queen’s Birthday public holiday, therefore there will be no classes on this date. Students are welcome to attend a different class this week if they wish.

Class Time Changes:Miss Jo and Miss Kezia’s Thursday classes:All of Miss Jo’s Thursday tap classes and Miss Kezia’s Thursday ballet classes will start and finish 15 minutes later from term 2 onwards. The start times will be:4:00pm: Pre-grade Tap4:45pm: Level 5 Tap5:45pm: Advanced Foundation Ballet7:00pm: Pointe7:30pm: Grade 8 Ballet

school holidays. The holiday class timetable will be given out later in the term, but please keep this week free if your child is entering an exam.

Private Lessons:If you would like to book a private lesson with one of our teachers, please email us to arrange this: contact@shoredance.co.nz. Private lessons cost $25.00 per half hour lesson and are open to all students.

Practicing at Home:Students who are entering in an exam need to be doing additional practice at home. This is very important to help them with preparation for the exams. There are syllabus DVDs available from RAD, AJDA, and NZAMD if you wish to purchase these to help your child with practicing at home. RAD Vocational Exams:Good luck to Azusa Nakamura who is sitting her RAD Advanced Foundation Ballet exam in May! You have been working very hard towards your exam Azusa and we wish you all the best!

Term Fees:You will have received an invoice for the term fees via email. These must be paid by the 14th of May. Term fees can be paid directly into our account (Shore Dance / 38-9008-0704687-00 / Kiwibank) with the student’s name as the reference, by cheque (made out to Shore Dance), or by cash which must be handed in a named envelope to your teacher.

Miss Whitney’s New Baby:For those of you that don’t know, I am due to have a baby at the end of May. When she arrives, Miss Stephanie will be helping me out with administrative work for Shore Dance. It is for this reason that I decided to get a new business phone number separate from my personal number: (027) 563 0883. Please take note of this new phone number.

Miss Caitlin’s Saturday Afternoon classes:There has been a slight change to the Saturday afternoon class times for Term 2 (so that we could fit in a weekend Barre class). Miss Caitlin’s Saturday afternoon ballet classes will now be held half an hour later at the following times:2:30-3:00pm: Pre-school Ballet Class3:00-3:45pm: Pre-primary Ballet ClassWe apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Shore Dance Exams 2017:Students have the opportunity to enter examinations for ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop and contemporary. These will be held during Term 3 of 2017. Students who are eligible to enter the exams will be sent the exam information by email. The ballet and jazz exam information packs are also available to download from our website by going to: http://shoredance.co.nz/exams. You will find online exam entry forms here where you can submit exam entries electronically. Please note the NZAMD tap, contemporary and hip hop exam information packs will be available later in the term. Here are the due dates for exam entries and fees to be paid (no late entries can be accepted):• RAD Ballet Grade exams (pre-primary to Grade 8): 14th of May• RAD Ballet Vocational exams: 22nd of May (please note we will contact the students directly who we are feel are ready to sit vocational exams this year)• AJDA Jazz exams: 1st of June

Reminder - Exam Eligibility:Please note that students must attend two syllabus classes per week from Grade 1 upwards if they wish to enter an RAD ballet exam. Students must attend two syllabus classes from Elementary Level 2 upwards if they wish to enter an AJDA jazz exam.

Holiday Classes:Students who are entering in an exam will be required to attend extra classes during the second week of the July

Absences:If your child is unable to attend class due to illness or being away, please let us know by either emailing contact@shoredance.co.nz or sending a text message to 027 563 0883. If your child has an injury, they can still come along and watch the classes. This is particularly important for students who are working towards exams to make sure they do not miss out on anything.

Congratulations Miss Josie: A huge congratulations to Miss Josie and her husband Michael who welcomed their baby girl Heidi Francesca Heenan into the world on the 27th of March! We are so glad to hear everything is going well for you all.

NEW Shore Dance Members Facebook Group:We have recently launched a new Facebook group for all of our Shore Dance parents/caregivers and students. We have decided to create this as a place we can easily communicate with each other regarding upcoming events, notices, and news. Parents/caregivers can also communicate with one another (i.e. to organise carpooling) and can notify teachers of students absences, plus much more! This will be a closed group so only Shore Dance parents/caregivers/students/staff can join. To join this group, simply follow this link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/shoredancemembers/

Make-up Tap Classes:For those students who attend Miss Jo’s Tuesday tap classes, there will extra classes held to make up for the Tuesday she was sick during Term 1 when we had to cancel classes. These will be held on Saturday 27th of

May in the back studio at the following times: 2:00pm: Level 1 2:45pm: Level 2 3:30pm: Level 3 4:15pm: Level 6 5:15pm: Adults Advanced 6:00pm: Adults Beginners 6:45pm: Adults Intermediate

Kairos Dance Convention:Shore Dance is going to the Kairos Dance Convention 2017!This is open to all Shore Dance students aged 8 years and over. It is a 2 day event held at the QBE Stadium in Albany on the 22nd-23rd July. Students participate in a range of dance classes including jazz, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary, musical theatre, audition technique, body conditioning and more!“This is going to be an amazing dance event that creates an energetic, supportive and inspirational environment for dancers of all ages”.To find out more information and register for this fantastic opportunity, please visit our website: shoredance.co.nz/kairos. The Dance Shop:A list of the uniform items required for each class can be found on tour website shoredance.co.nz/uniforms. You can purchase your uniform items from our uniform shop located at the studios. The shop will be open Saturday 29th of April from 1-3pm. Starship Foundation. This was such a fun week and I was so impressed to see how much everyone got involved and supported this fantastic cause. I am so proud to announce that we raised $500 for the Starship Foundation! Thenk you so much for all of your support. We look forward to holding another event like this in the near future!

Dress Up Competition Winners:As part of our dress up week, we judged which student and class had the best costumes. Congratulations to Poppy Kiefte from Elementary 2 Jazz who won the best dressed student! She is the lucky winner of a Shore Dance bag, a double pass to the Dance Academy Movie, and a Dance Academy Poster. Congratulations Poppy!

The winner of our best dressed class goes to the Advanced Foundation ballet students Amber Coates, Juliet Cunniffe, and Isabelle Tan for their outstanding effort! You have each won yourself a Shore Dance tote bag. Congratulations!

2016 Show DVDs: We still have a few show DVDs that have not yet been collected. These can be collected from the dance shop during its opening hours (Tuesdays 4:00-5:30pm, Thursdays 4:00-5:00pm, Fridays 5:30-6:30pm and Saturdays 10:45am-12:30pm). If you are unable to come in during these times, please contact us to arrange an alternative time.

New Studio Signage: We are very excited about our new building signage that we have been working on over the school holidays! We hope you like it as much as we do when you come back to Term 2!

Shore Dance / Starship Foundation Fundraiser:At the end of Term 2, we held a special Star Dress Up week to help fundraise money in support of the

Lost Property:There is a large collection of lost property in the waiting room that has been left at the studio throughout the term. Please look through it to make sure nothing belongs to you, as we will be donating what is left to charity.

Housekeeping:Please ensure that you place all rubbish in the rubbish bins provided. If you have take away coffee cups to dispose of, please can you take them down to the kitchen and empty out any left over liquid into the sink before placing in the rubbish bags. Please push the chairs back up against the wall once you are finished with them, and place toys and books back on the shelf when you are finished with them. We ask everyone to please respect our studios and waiting areas by keeping them tidy so everyone can enjoy the space.

2017 Dance Workshops:In addition to Kairos, there are a range of opportunities for students to attend dance workshops and seminars throughout the year. Details can be found below, and you are welcome to contact us for more information:

Royal New Zealand Ballet Open Classes:Every time the Royal New Zealand ballet tours with a new season, they hold open classes which cater for students from Grade 3 upwards. “We help to develop young dancers through a range of exciting classes for students of all levels. These non-syllabus open classes will be led by our RNZB dancers. New Zealand School of Dance Winter School:“New Zealand School of Dance Winter School is an annual five day course offering intensive tuition in a range of dance styles.Held in the first week of the

winter school holidays, it is a fantastic opportunity for young dance students to learn from the faculty of the New Zealand School of Dance alongside some of the best national and international teachers available.Winter School is suitable for students working at the equivalent of RAD Grade 5 up to Solo Seal. It offers diverse new challenges, with classes offered in classical, contemporary and allied dance styles. Auckland Academy of Dance Vocational Seminars:Compulsory for all Shore Dance students who are sitting RAD vocational exams this year. “This seminar is designed to assist students who are preparing to sit their Royal Academy of Dance examinations in 2017.
