From the metropolitan vibrancy of Times Square to the undulating vineyards in Napa Valley, the East and West coasts couldn’t be more distinct. On the opposite ends of the country, home design also takes on these particular aesthetics, whether it be the East Coast’s traditional flair or the West Coast’s casual chic style. Interior designer Birgit Klein is no stranger to these dif-ferences: Her design firm, Birgit Klein Interiors, is based in Los Angeles with an outpost in the Hamptons in New York, and composes timeless spaces by highlighting the best of both tastes.

In one home in the Hamptons, for example, Klein’s client wanted a getaway that wasn’t a typ-ical beach house. The designer juxtaposed tra-ditional East Coast details like beadboard and sea-inspired colors with modern elements, from contemporary artwork to a glass-front fireplace with reclaimed wood surround.

“The focus was to create a comfortable and approachable space that was also tailored and pulled-together to entertain guests from the city without being stuffy,” Klein says. “... We employed comfortable, kid-friendly furnish-ings and created gathering areas, like a large kitchen island with seating and a pass-through bar area that keeps conversations flowing from

the kitchen to the living room to the outside.”On the opposite end of the country, Klein

designed another luxurious yet livable space in Beverly Hills. The classic Mediterranean-style residence was given glamourous touches like Baccarat chandeliers and silk textiles to comple-ment its quintessential West Coast elements such as hardwood floors, soaring ceilings and plentiful windows. “The West Coast allows for a bit more drama and a license to mix materials more so than on the East Coast,” Klein says of the design.

Many homeowners retain more than one home on both coasts, however, and the choice does not always have to be made between the two influences. Blending the styles is simple, Klein says, with the right color palette and furnishing selections.

“With a good foundation, a combination of West and East Coast pieces can work,” she explains. “A classic wing chair, which is gen-erally considered East Coast, can look great paired with a sleek marble and brass side table, more of a West Coast piece. A cohesive color palette can tie it all together especially if the fab-rics and furnishings have subtle nods to their respective coasts.” M

“There are nods to traditional East Coast style through the beadboard paneling in the bathrooms and the Shaker-style

kitchen with schoolhouse pendants,” Birgit Klein says of this home she designed in

the Hamptons. “Even though we included these traditional elements, we kept the rest of the space modern and fresh to

juxtapose [with] the expected.”
