A Message from the Editors

We are delighted to present the first Princeton WILDGuides catalogue, containing published and forthcoming titles for both the Princeton and WILDGuides lists. The coming years will bring a stream of high-quality natural history books ranging from local British field guides to interna-tional references and field manuals.

The 2012 list builds on WILDGuides’ highly acclaimed and popular ‘Britain’s Wildlife’ series with new titles covering sea mammals and hoverflies. Britain’s Sea Mammals combines extensive information on identification with details on the best sites to observe the various spe-cies. The result is a highly practical field and site guide. Britain’s Hoverflies

is a groundbreaking book that will enable reliable identification of more than 160 species—those that can be readily identified in the field. The

World’s Rarest Birds is a stunning presentation of more than 600 of the most threatened species. Each is depicted with superb photos—submit-ted from photographers around the world—or alluring paintings by Tomasz Cofta. The book contains up-to-the-minute information on each bird’s status and distribution. It will serve as a celebration of some of the most spectacular birds in the world and a sobering reminder of the acute threats that many of them face.

The Unfeathered Bird is artist and bird curator Katrina van Grouw’s remarkable take on bird anatomy. The book shows the wide range of evolutionary adaptations of bird species through meticulous, beautiful studies of skeletons and musculature for some 200 species. Most are caught in lifelike positions—fishing, plucking prey, swimming, and so forth. There simply isn’t another book that combines art and natural history in this way. We are also launching a new series for Princeton WILDGuides, ‘Wildlife Explorer Guides’. Birds of the Masai Mara and Animals of the Masai Mara are designed for any visitor wanting to know more about common and charismatic species. These richly illustrated guides focus on a lot more than basic identification, with insights into behaviour and fuller descriptions of the varied habitats of the Mara.

And, finally, there are two dedicated and complementary guides for South Georgia, A Field Guide to the Wildlife of South Georgia and a new edition of A Visitor’s Guide to South Georgia. Armed with these, you are guaranteed to make the most of any trip to this extraordinary island.

The World’s Rarest BirdsErik Hirschfeld, Andy Swash & Robert Still

This illustrated book vividly depicts the most endangered birds in the world and provides the latest information on the threats each species faces and the measures being undertaken to save them. Today, 571 bird species are classified as critically endangered or endangered, and a further four now only exist in captivity. This landmark book features stunning photographs of 500 of these species—the results of a prestigious international photo-graphic competition organized specifically for this book. It also showcases paintings by acclaimed wildlife artist Tomasz Cofta of the 75 species for which no photos are known to exist.

The World’s Rarest Birds has introductory chapters that explain the threats to birds, the ways threat categories are applied, and the distinction between threat and rarity. The book is divided into seven regional sections—Europe and the Middle East; Africa and Madagascar; Asia; Austral-asia; oceanic Islands; North America, Central America, and the Caribbean; and South America. Each section includes an illustrated directory to the bird species under threat there, and gives a concise description of distribution, status, population, key threats, and conservation needs. This one-of-a-kind book also provides coverage of data deficient species.

Erik Hirschfeld works in air traffic control management and is a freelance writer, guide, and consultant in ornithol-ogy. Andy Swash is a professional ecologist and former environmental adviser to the British government, and runs the photographic agency World Wildlife Images. rob Still is an ecologist, widely traveled naturalist, and graphic artist who designs books that encourage people to take greater interest in the natural world.

The Unfeathered BirdKatrina van Grouw

There is more to a bird than simply feathers. And just because birds evolved from a single flying ancestor, doesn’t mean they are structurally all the same. With over 300 stunning drawings representing 200 species, The Unfeathered Bird is a richly illustrated book on bird anatomy and offers a refreshingly original insight into what goes on beneath the surface. Each exquisite drawing is made from an actual specimen and repro-duced in sumptuous large format. The birds are shown in lifelike positions and engaged in behaviour typical of the species: a fish’s-eye view of a swimming loon skel-eton, the musculature of a porpoising penguin, and an unfeathered sparrowhawk plucking its prey. Jargon free and easily accessible to any reader, the lively text relates birds’ anatomy with their lifestyle and evolution, examining such questions as, why penguins are bigger than auks, whether harrier hawks really have double-jointed legs, and the difference between wing claws and wing spurs. A landmark in popular ornithological literature, The Unfeathered Bird is a must for anyone with an appreciation of birds, bird art, or both.

Katrina van Grouw is a former curator of the ornitho-logical collections at London’s Natural History Museum, a taxidermist, experienced bird bander, successful fine artist, and a graduate of the royal College of Art.

Britain’s Plant GallsA Photographic GuideMichael Chinery

This book has been produced with the aim of stimulating the general naturalist to take a closer look at the bumps and lumps that make up the fascinating world of plant galls. Induced by a variety of insects and other organisms and ranging from tiny pimples to bizarre and often very attractive and exquisitely sculptured growths, plant galls are a mystery to many people, but they offer a fascinating field of study for both botanists and zoologists. Galls can be found on a very wide range of both woody and herbaceous plants, with over 50 different kinds occurring on Britain’s oak trees alone, and there is still much to be learned about even the commonest examples.

Michael Chinery is best known for his field guides to insects and other creepy-crawlies, especially those that occur in gardens. He joined the British Plant Gall Society soon after its formation in 1985, and has been editing the Society’s journal, Cecidology, since 1990.

Useful worldwide, not just in North America, this photographic guide is based on unrivaled field experience and combines insightful text and hundreds of full-colour images to help you identify these remarkable birds.

The first book of its kind, this guide features an introduction that explains ocean habitats and the latest developments in taxonomy. Detailed species accounts describe key identification features such as flight manner, plumage variation related to age and molt, seasonal occurrence patterns, and migration routes. Under its Living Planet Campaign, the World Wildlife Fund has identified 200 of the Earth’s most biologically outstanding habitats. one of these is the Altai-Sayan Montane Forests Ecoregion, an extraordinary mosaic of coniferous forests, intermontane steppe, and alpine mead-ows that lies on the borders of russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and China, and where half the flora of Siberia can be found. The team of authors responsible for producing this remarkable book has surveyed more than 300 endemic plants, many of which are important for medicine or food, to plug a gap in the knowledge of a poorly studied region. The book contains the first photographs published of many of the species and is a testament to international scientific collaboration.

How to Be a Better BirderDerek Lovitch

“This book is useful for those wanting a convenient introduction to birding as it is currently practiced by many of the leaders in the North American field. The writing is informative and con-versational, a good balance to strike when trying to make more advanced birding techniques accessible to a broader audience.”—Jeffrey A. Gordon, president of the American Birding Association

This unique illustrated handbook provides all the essential tools you need to become a better birder. Here Derek Lovitch offers a more effective way to go about identification—he calls it the “Whole Bird and More” approach—that will enable you to identify more birds, more quickly, more of the time. He demon-strates how to use geography and an understanding of habitats, ecology, and even the weather to enrich your birding experience and help you find something out of the ordinary. Lovitch shows how to track nocturnal migrants using radar, collect data for bird conservation, discover exciting rarities, develop patch lists—and much more.

This is the ideal resource for intermediate and advanced birders. Whether you want to build a bigger list or simply learn more about birds, How to Be a Better Birder will take your birding skills to the next level.

Derek Lovitch has worked on avian research and education proj-ects throughout the United States, has written numerous articles for birding publications, and was a columnist for Birding magazine. He now owns and runs Freeport Wild Bird Supply in Maine.

BirdscapesBirds in our Imagination and ExperienceJeremy Mynott

“An absolutely fascinating book, exhaustively researched, beautifully written, both learned and humorous, and endlessly stimulating.”—Bryan Bland, Birding World

Birdscapes is a unique meditation on the variety of human responses to birds, from antiquity to today, and from casual ob-servers to the globe-trotting “twitchers” who sometimes risk life, limb, and marriages simply to add new species to their “life lists.” Drawing extensively on literature, history, philosophy, and sci-ence, Jeremy Mynott puts his own experiences as a birdwatcher in a rich cultural context. Conversational, playful, and witty, Birdscapes gently leads us to reflect on large questions about our relation to birds and the natural world.

Jeremy Mynott has been watching, listening to, and thinking about birds—and birders—for much of his life. He is the former chief executive of Cambridge University Press and is a fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge.

The Jewel HunterChris Gooddie

“[A] highly entertaining read.”—Jeremy Brock, Scottish Birds

A tale of one man’s obsession with rainforest jewels, this is the story of an impossible dream: a quest to see every one of the world’s most elusive avian gems—a group of birds known as pittas—in a single year.

Insightful, compelling, and laugh-out-loud funny, this is more than a book about birds. It’s a true story detailing the lengths to which a man will go to escape his midlife crisis. A travelogue with a difference, it follows a journey from the suburban straitjacket of High Wycombe to the steamy, leech-infested rainforests of remotest Asia, Africa, and Australia.

Dangerous situations, personal traumas, and logistical nightmares threaten The Jewel Hunter’s progress. Will venomous snakes or razor-clawed bears intervene? or will running out of fuel mid-Pacific ultimately sink the mission? The race is on. . . .

If you’ve ever yearned to escape your day job, wondered what makes men tick, or simply puzzled over how to make a truly world-class cup of tea, this is a book for you.

Honeybee DemocracyThomas D. Seeley

“[S]plendid.”—John Whitfield, Nature

“Dr. Seeley is an engaging guide. His enthusiasm and admiration for honeybees is infectious. His accumulated research seems truly masterly, do-ing for bees what E. o. Wilson did for ants.”—Katherine Bouton, New York Times

“[E]ngaging and fascinating. . . . Seeley writes with infectious enthusiasm. . . . Honeybee Democracy offers wonderful testament to his career of careful investigation of a remarkable natural phenomenon. The breadth and depth of the studies reported in it should inspire all students of animal behaviour.”—Science

An impressive exploration of animal behaviour, Honeybee Democracy shows that decision-making groups, whether honeybee or human, can be smarter than even the smartest individu-als in them.
