This is Archaeopteryx, a fossilfirst found in 1861. If it was not For the clear imprint of feathersThis animal would have been classifiedas a reptile. Note the claws, teeth andtail.

It is believed by paleontologists thatBirds are descended from the two legged Theropod Dinosaurs.

The Raptors weresmall theropod Dinosaurs. Recentdiscoveries in China haveunearthed manyRaptors with feather impressionspointing directlyto the link betweenRaptors and theirdescendents; the Birds. The bones ofRaptors and Birdsalso reveal their kinship.

Archaeopteryx – “The EarlyWing” and was about the size of a crow. It probably ate anything smaller than itself. How gooda flyer it was is a matter of debate,though it could certainly glideabout the Jurassic, Germanforests that it called home. There are only eleven known fossils

most of which have feathers. BecauseArchaeopteryx' feathers were very advanced it is thought that feathers had been evolving for quite some time.

Except for the teeth, tail and threefingered hands, this small dinosaurcould easily be mistaken fora modern bird. This small raptorlike animal was

Pterodactyls werenot birds but a mucholder lineage of flyingreptiles that dominated the skies for over 153 millionyears. The largest known flyingcreature ever was a pterodactylcalled Quetzalcoatlus with awingspan of 33 to 36 feet!

Scientists believe that they can reverse engineera Raptor by turning off specific genes in chicken embryos. The genetic legacy of the BirdsDinosaur ancestors are locked away in their DNA.

Meantime, if you want tosee dinosaurs, you willhave to look to the skiesat their high flyingancestors; the Birds!
