traveled to Brewster on Tuesday, Sept. 11, to take part in a quad featuring Brewster/Triplains, Logan, and Weskan. The girls tried their hardest but the pieces just weren’t together for any wins as the Cougars dropped all three games.

The Cheylin football team looked to rebound against Grinnell/Wheatland after suffering a disappointing loss to Rawlins County last Friday. There were questions about how the Cougars would respond to the loss of Senior Adam Orten.

The Cougars opened up the game with a bang when senior Kenan Reeh returned the opening kickoff to the Thunderhawks 5-yard line. Senior Austin Cobb punched the ball in for the first touchdown of the game four plays later.

The fans had an offensive game on their minds after the quick start, however it was not meant to be as the next score didn’t come until midway through the second quarter when freshman Devon Janicke received excellent blocking and out ran the Thunderhawk secondary for the first touchdown of his high school career.

The Cougars played aggressive defense all first half and were able to architect a complete and utter shutdown of the Thunderhawk offense. Walker Janicke should also be credited for his bone shattering hit on one of the Cougars punt returns.

The Cougars went into halftime ahead 12 to 0. The Cougars brought the same intensity to the field on defense in the second half but still lacked any real offensive stability.

The Cougars were able to scratch out one second-half touchdown to go up 18 to 0. However the Thunderhawks refused to rollover and were determined to make a comeback.

They scored their first touchdown of the game mid-fourth quarter and executed a successful onside kick to give themselves another offensive crack. They appeared to be on the move again and were assisted by two very questionable pass interferences called on the Cougars.

The Cougars were able to hold thanks to a forced fumble which was recovered by freshman James Kehl. This gave the Cougars the ball with an 18-6 lead.

The Cougars were then able to drain the clock for their first league victory of the year. Congrats to our boys on taking another step towards a league championship repeat.
