  • Brain disorder that causes severe shifts in mood, energy,

    activity levels, and ability to do everyday tasks.

    Different from usual ups and downs

    Results of untreated bipolar disorder

    Characterized by extreme changes in mood.

    - Mania or hypomania

    - Depression

    - Mixed state

  • - Mood: overly happy, excited, and energetic; irritable, confusion, anger, feelingtrapped.

    - Behavior: fast talking, easily distracted, goal planning, poor sleep, impulsive sex and money spend

    - May also be hypomania

  • - Mood: sad, worry, empty, sense of worthlessness

    - Behavior: slowed down, change in sleeping or eating habits, thinking orattempting suicidal

  • Severe depression,Moderate depression,

    and mild low mood

    Normal or balancedmood Hipomania and

    severe mania

  • - May be confused with other disorders, for example, schizophrenia.

    - The most useful tool is speaking with the patient.

    - Mood swings or other symptoms

    - Severity, length, frequency

    - Mental illness in family history

    - BP has a strong genetic component

  • -Use of blood and urine tests

    - Exclude other causes

    - See presence of other drugs

    -Use of high tech neuro imaging tests

  • - No single cause

    - Most people are in their teens or early 20s when symptoms of bipolar disorder

    first appear.

    - Hypomanic Episodes

    - Depressive Episodes

  • Drug Treatment:

    - Mood Stabilizers

    - Antidepressives

    - Antipsychotics
