The commentary on eachpassage presents th e committee S judgment concerning the correctform of th e text , th e degree of certainty or probabili ty. th e manuscr ipts which suppor t or counter the chosen form, an d a detailed,critical discussion of th e history of scholarship on that passage.

The depth an d thoroughness of th e analysiS is t ruly impressive.As in al l o the r works of judgment, there will no t be unanimousagreement with th e committee S choices; some will f ind a tendencyto side with th e Massoretic textus reaeptu3. But behind each judgment is a clear and reasoned exposition of th e evidence which willbe a required component of future discussions of tha t passage. Wewill al l s tand in debt to th e immense learning which constitutes th isvolume.

Parrhasius died in 1522, he bequeathed his MSS to his f r iendAntonio Seripando. The latter 1s l ibrary wa s already in th eAugust inian monastery of S. Giovanni a Carbonara in Naples in1527 and probably remained there after he died in 1531. In an ycase it wa s l a te r a par t of th e public l ib rary of S . Giovanni aCarbonara, which Antonio!s brother , Cardinal Girolamo Seripando(d . 1563), founded in the years 1550-1552. 4 Between 1716 an d1718 th e MS came as a more or less voluntary gift into th eimperial cour t l ibrary in Vienna,S where i t received th e number17 . After the Fi rs t World War i t wa s handed over to Italy in 1919in compliance with th e stipulations of th e peace treaty of st . The codex is nowarranged in 8 regular ternions and one additional binio: fol. 1-6,7-12, 13-18, 19-24, 25-30, 31-36, 37-42, 43-48, 49-52. The MS is a palimpsest in al l it s leaves . The leaves come fromtw o different Ol d Latin biblical MSS, one of th e Pentateuch (C 101)and the other of 1-4 Kingdoms (C 115). The sequence of th eleaves in cod. lat . 1 is shown by Schema I, which l ists the extant

7texts . On a fe w leaves th e ol d script has been obl i tera ted so

thoroughly for the reuse of th e parchment that decipherment isno longer possible on the hair side; these leaves ar e marked withth e symbol , an d the reference which stands in parentheses ( )indicates th e estimated extent of th e text on tha t page.

We must ad d to this schema some fur ther observat ions . Fol. 41an d 52 in fact originally formed a double leaf; but already beforethe restoration of 1940 they had become disconnected, due to th edeter iora ted condition of fol. 52. Fol. 16 wa s presumably notinscr ibed with a biblical text , or at least no cer ta in traces of th euncial scr ip t ca n be discerned anywhere on it . On the contrary,on th e uppe r margin of fol. 16V traces of a minuscule can be seen,an d on fol. 16R on e ca n discern 6- 7 lines of text in a minusculescr ip t which seems to point to th e 7t h century an d to upper Italy(Bobbio) . Its text was writ ten in on e wide column, bu t unfortunate ly al l tha t ca n be deciphered ar e individual words or parts ofwords which w:iIl not yield a connected context .

Of th e ol d Pentateuchal MS, whose uncials are generally assignedto th e 5t h century an d most probably to I ta ly, 8 thus fa r only th eGenesis texts have been edi ted; they ar e published in my Genesis(Vetus Latina 2; Fre iburg , 1951-54). In the same volume, pp. 7* -10*, I have reconstructed the ol d MS and have supplemented 9 th epalaeographical description by E. A. Lowe, Codices Latini Antiquiores . . . III , No . 390. The texts from Exodus an d Leviticus arenot y et edi ted.

Less difficult to decipher than these P enta teuchal texts is th escr ipt of the o ther Ol d Latin biblical MS with 1-4 Kingdoms. Thereare 28 leaves preserved from it , although 8 of it s pages , despi teal l efforts, remain illegible except fo r th e quire numbers when theyoccurred . The work on th e palimpsest texts s tar ted, therefore,with th e legible pages from 1- 4 Kingdoms. 1. Eichenfeld an d S t.

E n d l ~ c h e r printed the text of the first column of fol. 31V on pageIX in th e preface to Analecta grammatica maximam partem anecdota(Vienna, 1837). Then J. Belsheim edited all 48 legible pages from1-4 Rg plus 3 pages from Genesis in Palimpsestus Vindobonensis:

The scr ibe also interchanged similar words. Such errors aresometimes corrected: in 1 Rg 11: 11 oculum is corrected to popuZum,and in 1 Rg 14;21 ullo to ilIo an d perhaps populo. In 3 Rg 12:24nexivit mulier, which should read exivit clamor, is not corrected;the scribe wa s le d astray by th e words abit mulier a t th e beginningof th e verse . In 1 Rg 6: 8 praemittite is probably to be expla inedas a similar error , where remittite wa s intended.

In th e case of Vulgar Latin forms, one ca n scarcely decidewhether to credi t them to th e scr ibe or to consider them as genuineelements of th e Ol d Latin text . Thus in 3 Rg 12: 24 m erint ins teadof erunt should be allowed to s tand . B ut in th e case ofascen(dOderunt in 1 Rg 14 : 22 an d in the case of conprehendi(di)in 2 Rg 4: 10 it remains uncertain whether we should follow th ecorrector, wh o erased (dO. Thus we read de terram :in 2 Rg4: 11 , a [adem in 1 Rg 1: 14 an d 2 Rg 10: 28, in sellam suam in 1 Rg4: 13, in convallem in 1 Rg 6: 13 , an d similar phrases . In the caseof th e nominative cornum meum in 1 Rg 2: 1 dit tography ma y haveplayed a role as well, but not in th e accusative cornum in 1 Rg 2:

There are similar f luctuations in the use of th e n. In 3 Rg13 : 28 stabat is corrected to stabant. On the other hand, in 4 Rg15: 35 incendebant is written fo r incendebat. In 3 Rg 12: 8, wherewe read derelinquit, probably the perfect dereliquit is meant. Th en is lacking in 4 Rg 17: 3, where athuc stands ins tead of ad hunc;perhaps the scribe wa s le d astray b y th e athuc tha t appears onth e same page , in 15: 35. The n is also lacking in the VulgarLatin form spadit ins tead of expandit in 2 Rg 17: 19 . The nameionathan is corrected in 4 Rg 15': 32 to ionatham" bu t remainsunchanged in 15: 36 an d 38.
